OBITUARY OF MRS SAMUEL HARRIS
From the 'Budget' 15th January 1898.

"Monday's Wanganui Chronicle reports of that another resident in person Mrs Harris, wife of Mr Samuel G. Harris, passed away at 2:15 at her late residence, Wilson Street, on Sunday. She was 77 years of age and a native of Plymouth. She came out to the Colony on March 31st, 1841 and settle(d) in New Plymouth, where she was married, going to Wanganui, in the year 1858. Mr and Mrs Harris celebrated their golden wedding 6 years ago. She leaves 3 sons, 4 daughters, and a great number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To this we may add that Mr Harris was one of the party which accompanied Mr F.A. Carrington, arrived here in the "Brougham" on February 11th, 1841. Pilgrim Fathers Arrival into New Zealand

An Obituary of interest ... Samuel Gregory HARRIS born 1816 Plymouth, England, died 1897 New Zealand.

From newspapers, 15th August 1902.

By the Wanganui papers we see that this old colonist passed away in the 15th August at the good old age of 81 years. The late Mr Harris arrived in the colony - Wellington - by the ship 'Slaines Castle' in December 1840. He came out with the late Mr Octavius Carrington as one of the survey chainmen for the Plymouth Company, and in company with Messrs. F.A. and O. Carrington, Rogan, and Duppa, surveyors to the Plymouth Company, landed at Moturoa, Taranaki, from the ship 'Brougham' on the 11th February 1841. As Mr Harris was the last survivor of this band of pioneers we give the names of the others of the party, all of whom have proved the 'metal of their pasture' in the noble work of colonising and civilising this fair country:- Harcourt Aubrey, Paines, George Duppa, James Dingle, William Lakeman and Mrs Lakeman-Levitt, Charles Nairn, William Pote and Mrs Pote, and Sam Teague. Mrs F.A. Carrington was also a member of this band of 'Pilgrim Fathers', the forerunners of the many thousands who now occupy this district. The country was at this time a veritable wilderness, and in the graphic language of one of the chainmen ..."The surveyor turned his party loose into the fern like wild pigs". Here after a minute examination of about seven or eight hundred miles of coast, Mr Carrington fixed the site for the future town, to be called New Plymouth after the old town of that name, the headquarters of the Plymouth Company.

The late Mr Harris married soon after his arrival, a daughter of the late William Edgecombe and sister of Mr Chas Edgecumbe of this town, and some years since they celebrated their golden wedding. For many years Mr Harris has been settled in Wanganui where he was a highly respected citizen, and a prominent member of the Wesleyan and other bodies. There will be on view for a few days at Messrs. Bellrigner's shop, Devon Street, a fine old coloured picture a copy of view of "parts of the new Plymouth settlement in the district Taranaki from a drawing taken on board the ship 'Brougham' by George Duppa, Esq." This view shows the country around New Plymouth as it was in 1841.

AUSTRALIA NSW & QLD: Looking for connections with Catherine Mary CANTWELL and John GORDON

John GORDON (Snr) married Catherine Mary CANTWELL* abt 1859 and they had at least one known child, John Francis GORDON (Jnr) born 25/7/1860 Picton NSW Australia, died 29/8/1924 aged 64 years. Both sets of parents' names unknown at this stage.

*Catherine Mary CANTWELL was somehow related to my ancestor Patrick CANTWELL (gg grandfather) 1827-1875 who was a former coalminer in Clough, Co.Kilkenny, Ireland and emigrated to Australia in 1851 with other family members aboard the 'Garland'. They followed James CANTWELL 1797-1857 who was previously transported to Australia in 1834 aboard ship 'James Laing'. His son, Patrick CANTWELL was a goldminer and may have been in QLD perhaps say 1851-1853. [More info available.]

John GORDON (Jnr) married at Charleville QLD Australia in Feb 1890 to Hannah Jane LYNCH born Charleville 1/11/1870, died 29/4/1925 aged 54 years. Hannah was the daughter of Thomas LYNCH and Ellen MOLONEY.

John & Hannah GORDON had 9 children:-

1.Mary Catherine GORDON born 1892 Charleville QLD (spouse BARRON)
2.William John GORDON born 1894 Charleville QLD
3.Lillian May GORDON born 1896 Charleville QLD (spouse WARNER)
4.Gertrude Mabel GORDON born 1898 Charleville QLD (spouse HUDSON)
5.Thomas Francis GORDON born 1902 Gowrie Junction
6.Eileen Florence GORDON born 1907 Gowrie Junction (spouse HENRY)
7.Evelyn Grace GORDON born 1909 Oakey QLD (spouse BERGHOFFER)
8.Edward GORDON born 1910 Burton NSW
9.Thomas GORDON born 1913 Burton NSW, killed in action New Guinea 29/1/1943 W.X.14883.

Any response appreciated, and all information graciously received.

Regards, Allycat, Qld, Australia.

IRELAND: Looking for details on Kieran aka Ciaran CANTWELL born 1894

I'm looking for any details on this Irish ancestor - Kieran also known as Ciaran CANTWELL born C1894 in either Laois (Kings) or Offaly (Queens) County. Father's name was Thomas CANTWELL and mother's name unknown unknown.

Extra information: Kieran Cantwell worked as a Blacksmith. He died young - aged only 32 years (died 1926). Several searches have been carried out in Dublin (by post) for his birth certificate but they could not find it. They would carry out a search for 5 years, and if they found nothing more money would be spent on the next 5 year search, but to no avail.

Rahan appears to be the ancestral home of this branch of Cantwells. Many graveyards have been searched in the general area, but unfortunately Rahan was not searched as this information was unknown at the time.

I thought I'd have more luck getting a helpful soul to check Parish Registers (if there is such a thing - sorry I'm an Aussie), as the family were most probably Roman Catholic.

Thanking everyone that reads this, cheerio ... Allycat.
