AUSTRALIA: John MOST and Una Bell BEARD

Dear Members, Looking for connections with this family. Jack was the brother of my ancestor, Louisa MOST.

John MOST known as 'Jack' b.1874 Inverell NSW was the son of Henry MOST b.1824 Hesse, Germany and Henrietta SCHIA or BRAGIER or BROSER b.1837 Germany, they emigrated to Australia separately and ended up marrying.

John married (Reg.No. 7334/1906) Inverell NSW to Una Bell BEARD b.1887
Warialda NSW (also known as Younerbell). Una was one of 10 children born to James BEARD b.1843 Linton, Cambridgeshire, England and Sarah ROLLINGS who was possibly an Aussie.

It seems that John & Una MOST had three children, I had always only known about the two girls, and I just found one little baby recently, that died young:-

1.Maude L. MOST born 1907 Inverell NSW Australia
possibly married someone with a surname QUICK.

2.Henry MOST 1909~1909 Queensland, Australia. Queensland Historical Index Search of Births, Deaths and Marriages 1829-1914

3.May MOST born after 1918 possibly NSW or QLD.

Below is a lovely photograph in my possesion of Una Bell MOST nee BEARD with her two daughters, May and Maude.

More details are available on the MOST and BEARD families upon request.

Al in QLD Australia.

Australia: My Prussian / German surname interests - New South Wales

The 'MOST' Family

Henry MOST (my ggg grandfather) was born 1824 Hesse, Germany. Another researcher believes his parents to be: Thomas MOST and Elizabeth unknown but I have no confirmation of this.

Naturalised 1873. Married in Brisbane 1866 to Henrietta Schia aka Bragier* born 1837 Germany, arrived Australia 1855, Occupation: Farmer, died 19 Oct 1884 Ashford Inverell NSW. Children: 1.Anna b 1867 Wellingrove, 2.Louisa b 1869 Myall Ck near Ashford & 3.John aka Jack MOST b 1874 Inverell.

*Henrietta had been married before back in Germany to unknown BROSER or BROSELLE in 1859, and they had one daughter, Mary (Marie) BROSER MOST born 1862 Germany, married William BRAZIER and married 1883 Frederick William PISCHKE. More information available.

Children of Henry MOST and Henrietta:-

1.Anna MOST married Ernest GIDDINS and had 4 children, Lavinia, Henry, Charles & Eva Giddins.

2.Louisa MOST (my ancestor) married in 1890 at Inverell to Arthur Ernest Rhodes MERRY born 1856 Steeple Claydon, Buck., England (google Roads Family of Buckinghamshire for ancestry to C1480). They had 8 children, Leonard 1890, Florence 1892, Thomas 1894, Wilfred 1895, Elsie (my ancestor) 1897, Lydia 1900, Sophia 1902 and Beatrice 1904.

3.John (known to all as Jack) MOST married in 1906 at Inverell to Una Bell BEARD born 1887 Warialda, and had 3 children
i) Maude MOST born 1907 Inverell NSW married Guy T. QUICK
ii) Henry MOST 1909~1909 Queensland http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/IndexSearch.htm
iii) May MOST (probably still living).

The 'VOSS / FLANZE (or PHRANZE)' Family

Frederick Joseph Herman VOSS born 1830 the Grand Duchy of Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany. N.B. Fred Voss' father -name unknown- was a farmer who hired himself out as a mercenary soldier under Napoleon. In 1812 it is said that he went with Napoleon's "Grand Armee" to Russia, on the infamous march to Moscow. [Source: Obit of F.Voss 'Inverell Times' June 26, 1936] Fred Voss married in 1859 Alshue Germany to Johanna Doratea FLANZE born perhaps 1821 Holstein, Germany {not proven} and died 1882 'Clarevaulx', registered Glen Innes NSW. Her parent's names are now known as Henry FLANZE and Dorothea unknown.

Shortly after arrival in C1855 via ship "Daniel Ross" ex Hamburg, family was obliged by the Australian Govt of the time to undergo naturalisation, and to anglicise their German names. Family made their way up from Port of Sydney in colony of NSW to vicinity of Moree, Gunnedah and Narrabri. First the family lived on 'Gurley Station' where Frederick worked as a shepherd and farmer. Later the family moved up to the Glen Innes area.

Fred & Dorothy VOSS had 6 children, 1.Otte Nickelark Marks, a twin to sister, 2.Dor - both born Germany, 3.Frederick b 1856 Gurley (my ancestor), 4. Hammon Henry b1862 Weewaa a twin of 5.Anna Dorothea, and 6.Emma Christina b1862 Wellingrove.

Their first child also known as Nicholas Otto Marcus VOSS married in 1881 at Glen Innes to Susan PAGE, daughter of William & Ellen PAGE. They had 10 known children - 1.Otto, 2.Mary, 3.Ellen, 4.Ada, 5.Frederick, 6.John, 7.Mabel, 8.Henry, 9.Emily and 10.Richard VOSS.

Second child - we think that Dor Voss died young, possibly in Germany before the family emigrated to Australia, verification required.

Third child, Fred VOSS (my ancestor) married in 1883 at Glen Innes to Mary WEBBER b 1863 Bundaberg, Qld. She was the daughter of Johannes Heinrich WEBER b 1829 Dickschied Prussia d 1902 Lambs Valley NSW, and Elizabeth ORTH b 1835 Roppershain Hesse Prussia, d 1914 Lambs Valley NSW. Note: I have been provided with ORTH ancestry back to the 1600s by fellow researcher Graham Shirra, USA.

Note: The Weber/Webber family also arrived in Australia via the same ship as the Voss family - the Daniel Ross the voyage taking 129 days.

Fred & Mary Voss had 6 children - 1.John William 1884, 2.Frederick Henry 1887, 3.Henry Frederick 1888 (my ancestor), 4.Ernest Francis 1890, 5.Caspar Orth 1896 and 6.Blanche Wilhelmina Nita VOSS 1906.

N.B. Sub-names include: Guthiel, Weiderman, Hastenpflug, Seigner, Hoffmeyer, Cranz, Lowerman, Curtze, Lieberman, Kurtz and Rohleder.

Fourth child, Hammon Henry De Voss married Maude BEDDY in 1904 Sydney.

Fifth child, Anna Dorothea Voss married 1878 Wellingrove to Edward Augustus PIETSCH and had 3 children, Emily 1881, Henry 1883 and Edward 1888 NSW.

Their lastborn Emma Christina Voss married 1883 Glen Innes to Joseph COLE and had 9 known children - Joseph, William, Ernest, Arnold, Darice, Norman, Agnus, Amy and Herman COLE all born Inverell NSW.

If there are any connections out there, please don't hesitate to write to me. I also have my tree on Genes Reunited at which site names can be freely searched, however there is a small fee to host your tree. It's a brilliant website!

Regards,
Alison, QLD, Australia.

Photograph below is of my ancestor Henry MOST - he worked as a Shepherd.

Note: I think the MOST surname may have originally been MOEST/MOIST or even MOSTYN.

I have uploaded my birth, death, marriage and baptismal Certificates at this site Certificate Sharing.

ENGLAND: Alexander WOODCOCK and Annie Elizabeth JAHN of Westminster

My Great Grandfather, Alexander WOODCOCK was born 19 June 1877 at 16 Vincent Street, Westminster, England to parents: George James WOODCOCK 1844-1909 and Isabella BUCHAN 1837-1919. Alexander was born the 7th child, and his father worked as a butcher in London's East End, whilst his Scottish mother Isabella worked as a Laundress.

From what I can gather, Alexander worked as an Electric Light Wire Man. Family says that he used to get a lot of shocks in his trade. He can be found on the 1901 Census as a lodger at 29 Vincent Street as 'Alexander Woolcock' sic. The Head of the house at the time was Edward HOVEGAN aged 57, born Whitechapel, his wife Elizabeth aged 56, born Westminster and 2 children: Frederick aged 23; and Alfred 15, both born Westminster.

Alexander married when he was 25 years old on 12 April 1903 at the Parish Church of St. Anne's, Soho, Westminster, England, to Annie Elizabeth JAHN (my great grandmother). Her occupation was listed as 'Tailoress'. Annie was born 5 Oct 1879 at 59 Wardour Street, Westminster, England to parents: Ernest JAHN 1851-1908 of Germany and Elizabeth HANSFORD 1854-1923. It is thought that Ernest was born in the Harz Mountains (Kingdom of Hanover) Germany and escaped to England to avoid conscription.

Alexander & Annie WOODCOCK had 8 children:-

1.Annie Isabella (known as Peggy) WOODCOCK born 19 Oct 1904 London, England d. 1 Feb 1981, never married.

2.Bertha Ellen WOODCOCK born 1 Jun 1906 Westminster, London England, died 25 Dec 1984, married 6 Jul 1946 to Benjamin JONES. The couple later divorced.

3.Dorothy Elsie (known as Dolly) WOODCOCK born 21 Dec 1909 Fulham and Hamersmith, London, England, died 22 Jun 2002 Northwick Park Hospital, Brent, London, England; married 30 Jun 1935 St.Oswald's Church, Fulham, London, England to George Frederick CLARKE, born 13 Sep 1909 Fulham, London, England. They had two sons, who both unfortunately died young. (a) Roy CLARKE born 31 Jan 1938, died 3 Jan 1951 Pediatric Hospital, Goldsmith Avenue, Middlesex, England; aged 12 years from a golden staff infection, and (b) Geoffrey CLARKE born 24 Jun 1946 City of London Maternity Hospital, 76A Liverpool Road, England, died 2 Nov 1969 9A Station Approach, South Ruislip, England, aged 23 yrs from a heart condition.

4.Alexander Ernest (known as Alec) WOODCOCK born 6 Apr 1908, died 6 Mar 1909

5.Edgar (Ted / Eddie) Gerald WOODCOCK ... my grandfather, was born 6 March 1912, 29 Racton Road, Fulham, London, England. Emigrated to Australia in 1928 onboard ship "Queen Mary", married 1938 Inverell, New South Wales, Australia to Ethel Mary VOSS 1916-2001. She was the daughter of Henry Frederick VOSS and Elsie Louisa Rhodes MERRY. My grandfather served World War II. Edgar died 4 Jan 1980 Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital, Brisbane.

6.Stanley WOODCOCK born 1914 London, married March 1936 Fulham to Ermenia M. VOLPE (known as Mini) and had 5 children: June, Brian, Kevin, Liam, and Valerie. I would dearly love to get in contact with my mother's cousins.

7.Phyllis Francis WOODCOCK born 17 Dec 1920 Westminster, England, died 20 Apr 1979 married Victor (Henry) KENT they had a daughter Diane who married a STOCKWELL. I am in contact with Phyllis' granddaughter.

8.Betty Eileen WOODCOCK born 9 Jul 1923 Westminster, London, England died 6 Feb 1924, aged under 7 months.

Regards, Alison in Queensland, Australia.

This a digitised version of an atlas and gazetteer of the German Empire from 1883. Something that might be useful is that churches are marked on the maps. An Atlas of the German Empire by Ludwig Ravenstein

Once you have found a place on this map that you are researching and if you are having trouble locating them on modern maps, try and overlay the maps onto Google Earth. This works well apparently. There are links for this at Atlas des Deutschen Reichs. At the bottom of this page is a link which has Google Earth placemarks of some towns - Marburg, Templin, Mindin. You may wish to view a place called Grunenplan, where Hermann WINDOLF was born. From Google Earth it's a small village surrounded by a large C shaped area of woods. Looks worth a visit!

Be careful of the size of the images, 8-10MB per map, and there are 9
maps. There are links for each map. So you don't have to download all of them. But it would be impossible over a dialup link.

Some interesting reading at this website on a ship on which Francis Xavier HAUCK came to Australia from Hamburg. Lots to look at on this site Freideburg.
