Looking for ancestors/descendants of Ernest JAHN & Elizabeth HANSFORD
Ernest (or Ernst) JAHN was my 2g grandfather born 1851 in the Harz Mountains (Kingdom of Hanover), Germany. It is not known when he emigrated to England but he married my 2g grandmother 16 May 1875 St.Lukes Church, St.James, Westminster, England, Elizabeth Mary HANSFORD born 8 Jun 1854 47 Great Peter Street, Westminster, England died aged 71yrs 26 Apr 1923 at 34 Racton Road, Fulham, London, England from acute bronchitis. Elizabeth was the daughter of Alfred HANSFORD 1824-1858 and Ellen MCFARLANE born 1820 Harwich, Essex, England.
Another family member has supplied parents names of Ernest - August JAHN and Emma RUEPING. However I do not have any supporting documentation to back this up.
It is thought by several branches of JAHN descendants in England and also Australia that one of the JAHNs (who were bootmakers) made the shoes for Prince Albert upon his marriage to Queen Victoria.
Ernest and Elizabeth JAHN had 6 children:-
1.Louisa JAHN born 1 Aug 1876 37 Princes St, Westminster, died 4 Feb 1956 married 4 Aug 1895 Charles WOODCOCK born 18 Mar 1873 28 Wilton Street, Westminster, and had 9 children: Louise, Daisy, Macey, Margaret, Gladys, Charles, Isabella, Beatrice and Pauline. Louisa died aged 80yrs 4 Feb 1956 at 24 Pownall Place, Fulham, London, England. Charlie died aged 79yrs 3 Dec 1952 Fulham, London, England.
2.Mary JAHN born 12 Jun 1878 37A Princes Street, Westminster. Birth: GRO Sept 1878 Westminster 1a 482; Occupation: Tailoress. Note: She may be 'Aunt Polly' that is mentioned of by other family tree researchers. Polly is another form of Mary. If this is so, then she married and went to live in Switzerland and is believed to have had three sons.
3.Annie Elizabeth JAHN (my g grandmother) born 5 Oct 1879 59 Wardour Street, Westminster, England married my g grandfather 12 Apr 1903 Parish Church of St. Anne, Soho, Westminster, England Alexander WOODCOCK born 19 Jun 1877 16 Vincent Street, Westminster, England. Annie's occupation: Tailoress. Alexander's occupation: Electric Light Wireman. Annie & Alexander had 8 children: Annie, Bertha, Dorothy, Alexander, Edgar (my grandfather), Stanley, Phyllis and Betty.
4.Emily JAHN born 17 May 1885 chr. 10 Feb 1904 Soho St. Annes
5.Ellen JAHN born 14 Jan 1888 23 Great Windmill Street, Westminster, London, England chr. 10 Feb 1904 Soho St. Annes married Sept Quarter 1913 Fulham, London, England to Edward BANGETER born 1890 Sweden.
6.Ernest Alfred JAHN born 28 Jan 1892 33 Great Windmill Street, Westminster, London, England. Occupation: Bootmaker. According to family members, Ernest changed his name to Ernest JOHNS and became a singer (musical hall?).
My Genealogy Notations:-
*Two JAHN sisters married two WOODCOCK brothers. Louise married Charles WOODCOCK, occupation a lithographic printer; and Annie Elizabeth married Alexander WOODCOCK occupation an electric light wire man. They were the sons of George James WOODCOCK occupation Butcher and Isabella BUCHAN.
I have the WOODCOCK line back to 1777 Winfarthing, and the BUCHAN line back to 1600s Aberdeenshire.
Ernest Jahn - born abt 1849 Harz Mountains, Germany. Family legend has it that he came to England from Germany with his brother to escape conscription. It is said that he came from the Harz Mountains area but, in the 1891 Census for 33 Great Windmill Street, Westminster, London, his place of birth is stated to be Hamburg though this may just have been his point of departure. (Jan 1998 - not yet found in Shipping Lists for Hamburg departures). He is reputed to have made boots and shoes for the British Royal Family. His daughter, Louisa, was apprenticed to him and sewed the buckles and the gemstones on the shoes of Princess Alexandra (wife to Edward VII) and Princess Mary of Teck.

OBITUARY/INQUEST: RACTON ROAD MAN'S PEACEABLE END - The sudden decease of Ernest Jahn, aged 58, a bootmaker, of 31 Racton-road, Fulham, was inquired into at the Fulham Coroner's Court on Friday. - Elizabeth Jahn, wife of the deceased, said that her husband was a sober man. He had had a cold a fortnight before. Deceased was worried over losing his work after being constantly employed for thirty years. - The Coroner: Hadn't he a pension? - Witness: Oh, no - Proceeding, she said that on the Wednesday previously, she went to her work at a quarter to seven in the morning and did not return till eleven o'clock in the evening. She was surprised to hear of her husband's death. - Ernest Alfred Jahn, son of the deceased, said that on the Wednesday he got up at eight o'clock and called his father. He heard him stirring in his room. He had his breakfast and read the paper, and about ten o'clock went up to his father's room and found him dead, lying on his back - Mrs Deane, a neighbour, of 22 Racton-road, said she had known Mr Jahn for three years, and always thought him cheerful and healthy. - Dr A C Shaw-Mackenzie, of 2 Racton-road, said he was called to the house and found the man dead. He had made a post-mortem examination, and found that the deceased had acute congestion of the lungs and pneumonia. The cause of death was heart failure, consequent on the congestion of the lungs. - A verdict of "Death from natural causes" was returned. I might add that I'm delighted to be able to find out more on my JAHN and HANSFORD ancestors and hope to get in contact with descendants of Mary, Emily, Ellen and Ernest JAHN wherever they may be.

George AMOR (3g grandfather) born 1780 Bromham Wiltshire England married 24/12/1804 Bromham to Rebekka KNEE. (She was most probably the daughter of Benjamin KNEE source: 1772 Poll of Knights Wiltshire). The couple probably had two children, my ancestor George AMOR born 1805 Bromham, Wiltshire and Jane AMOR born 1814.
George AMOR b1805 married at Bromham 22/07/1833 to Rebecca ABRAMS of Bromham and they had 7 children that I can find.

William AMOR 1837-1913, occupation farmer, (my ancestor) married 13/10/1856 at Chittoe, Devizes, Wiltshire, England to Ann Priscilla WHEELER born 1835 Arnecliffe, Westbury, Wiltshire, England to parents: John WHEELER born 1801 Bremhill & Ruth BANCROFT born 1806 Bremhill. There are also marriage links with the FORTUNE family of Derry Hill, Wiltshire.
The couple (PHOTO attached), William AMOR and Ann Priscilla WHEELER (my gg grandparents) came to Australia when they were newly married, on the 'Beejapore' from Yorkshire. The 'Beejapore' arrived Botany Bay NSW 14 Mar 1857. The journey usually took about 9 months from England.
In Australia they settled in the State of Victoria and had 11 children in 18 years.

The 'MOST' Family
Henry MOST (my ggg grandfather) was born 1824 Hesse, Germany. Another researcher believes his parents to be: Thomas MOST and Elizabeth unknown but I have no confirmation of this.
At the age of 24 years he landed in Colony of New South Wales, Australia in 1848, occupation farmer, died 20 Sep 1898 'Rose Cottage' Inverell, NSW Australia, buried 21 Sep 1898 Church of England Cemetery, Ashford, New South Wales, Australia. Naturalised 1873. Married in Brisbane 1866 to Henrietta Schia aka Bragier* born 1837 Germany, arrived Australia 1855, Occupation: Farmer, died 19 Oct 1884 Ashford Inverell NSW. Children: 1.Anna b 1867 Wellingrove, 2.Louisa b 1869 Myall Ck near Ashford & 3.John aka Jack MOST b 1874 Inverell.
*Henrietta had been married before back in Germany to unknown BROSER or BROSELLE in 1859, and they had one daughter, Mary (Marie) BROSER MOST born 1862 Germany, married William BRAZIER and married 1883 Frederick William PISCHKE. More information available.

1.Anna MOST married Ernest GIDDINS and had 4 children, Lavinia, Henry, Charles & Eva Giddins.
2.Louisa MOST (my ancestor) married in 1890 at Inverell to Arthur Ernest Rhodes MERRY born 1856 Steeple Claydon, Buck., England (google Roads Family of Buckinghamshire for ancestry to C1480). They had 8 children, Leonard 1890, Florence 1892, Thomas 1894, Wilfred 1895, Elsie (my ancestor) 1897, Lydia 1900, Sophia 1902 and Beatrice 1904.
3.John (known to all as Jack) MOST married in 1906 at Inverell to Una Bell BEARD born 1887 Warialda, and had 3 children
i) Maude MOST born 1907 Inverell NSW married Guy T. QUICK

The 'VOSS / FLANZE (or PHRANZE)' Family
Frederick Joseph Herman VOSS born 1830 the Grand Duchy of Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany. N.B. Fred Voss' father -name unknown- was a farmer who hired himself out as a mercenary soldier under Napoleon. In 1812 it is said that he went with Napoleon's "Grand Armee" to Russia, on the infamous march to Moscow. [Source: Obit of F.Voss 'Inverell Times' June 26, 1936] Fred Voss married in 1859 Alshue Germany to Johanna Doratea FLANZE born perhaps 1821 Holstein, Germany {not proven} and died 1882 'Clarevaulx', registered Glen Innes NSW. Her parent's names are now known as Henry FLANZE and Dorothea unknown.
Shortly after arrival in C1855 via ship "Daniel Ross" ex Hamburg, family was obliged by the Australian Govt of the time to undergo naturalisation, and to anglicise their German names. Family made their way up from Port of Sydney in colony of NSW to vicinity of Moree, Gunnedah and Narrabri. First the family lived on 'Gurley Station' where Frederick worked as a shepherd and farmer. Later the family moved up to the Glen Innes area.
Fred & Dorothy VOSS had 6 children, 1.Otte Nickelark Marks, a twin to sister, 2.Dor - both born Germany, 3.Frederick b 1856 Gurley (my ancestor), 4. Hammon Henry b1862 Weewaa a twin of 5.Anna Dorothea, and 6.Emma Christina b1862 Wellingrove.
Their first child also known as Nicholas Otto Marcus VOSS married in 1881 at Glen Innes to Susan PAGE, daughter of William & Ellen PAGE. They had 10 known children - 1.Otto, 2.Mary, 3.Ellen, 4.Ada, 5.Frederick, 6.John, 7.Mabel, 8.Henry, 9.Emily and 10.Richard VOSS.
Second child - we think that Dor Voss died young, possibly in Germany before the family emigrated to Australia, verification required.
Third child, Fred VOSS (my ancestor) married in 1883 at Glen Innes to Mary WEBBER b 1863 Bundaberg, Qld. She was the daughter of Johannes Heinrich WEBER b 1829 Dickschied Prussia d 1902 Lambs Valley NSW, and Elizabeth ORTH b 1835 Roppershain Hesse Prussia, d 1914 Lambs Valley NSW. Note: I have been provided with ORTH ancestry back to the 1600s by fellow researcher Graham Shirra, USA.
Note: The Weber/Webber family also arrived in Australia via the same ship as the Voss family - the Daniel Ross the voyage taking 129 days.
Fred & Mary Voss had 6 children - 1.John William 1884, 2.Frederick Henry 1887, 3.Henry Frederick 1888 (my ancestor), 4.Ernest Francis 1890, 5.Caspar Orth 1896 and 6.Blanche Wilhelmina Nita VOSS 1906.
N.B. Sub-names include: Guthiel, Weiderman, Hastenpflug, Seigner, Hoffmeyer, Cranz, Lowerman, Curtze, Lieberman, Kurtz and Rohleder.
Fourth child, Hammon Henry De Voss married Maude BEDDY in 1904 Sydney.
Fifth child, Anna Dorothea Voss married 1878 Wellingrove to Edward Augustus PIETSCH and had 3 children, Emily 1881, Henry 1883 and Edward 1888 NSW.
Their lastborn Emma Christina Voss married 1883 Glen Innes to Joseph COLE and had 9 known children - Joseph, William, Ernest, Arnold, Darice, Norman, Agnus, Amy and Herman COLE all born Inverell NSW.

I am descended from the first McCrohon in Australia. His name was John MCCROHON 1795-1839 and he married Amelia (Emily) DU CROIX. They had 9 children that we know of, and one being Suzannah McCrohon (my ggg grandmother) married Patrick Cantwell who was a Gold Miner.
Also, the McCrohons in England are trying to link up with the McCrohons in Australia.
IRELAND: Looking for connections with Thomas Cantwell born 1772 Clough, Co.Kilkenny
Looking for ancestors/descendants of Thomas CANTWELL born about 1772 in Clough, County Kilkenny, Ireland. He married Mary FARRELL in Ireland before 1796 and they had at least two known children. It is now known that Thomas CANTWELL born abt 1772 father's name was also Thomas CANTWELL who was born abt 1750 and that our line descends from Sir Hugh de Cantwille late 11th Century.
Issue: 1.Michael Cantwell and 2.James Cantwell.
It hasn't yet been confirmed when Michael Cantwell was born, but it is known that he was 'transported last ship' and came out to Australia on the ship 'Parmelia'. It is thought that his wife and children did not follow.
James Cantwell (my ancestor) was born 1797 Cloneen, County Kilkenny, Ireland and died 27 March 1857 aged 60 at Narrowgut near Morpeth NSW Australia.
NSW BDM Death Registration No. 3339/1857 James Cantwill - parents: Thomas & Mary, District: Maitland.
James CANTWELL (standing number 34-1102, indent number 93) was transported to Australia aboard the ?James Laing?, arriving in NSW, Australia on 29 June 1834. He was 30 years old, married and had six children, four male and two female.
James CANTWELL, a Roman Catholic, could read but not write. A native of County Kilkenny, Ireland, he was a coal miner. He was convicted of ?unlawful oaths? at Kilkenny on 14 March 1833 and sentenced to life. He had no previous convictions.
James CANTWELL was six feet tall, with a brown complexion and was a little pockpitted. He had light sandy hair and dark grey eyes. His peculiar marks and scars are described as ?I?S? back of right hand, same back of left hand.
In the remarks column of the list of prisoners for the ?James Laing?, it states that James CANTWELL?s brother Michael CANTWELL had been transported ?last ship?.

James CANTWELL was a convict transported to Australia on the transport ?James Laing? in 1834. He was assigned to the district of Port Stephens.

The ?James Laing? departed Dublin, Ireland on 16 Feb 1834 and arrived in Sydney, NSW, Australia on 29 Jun 1834, after a passage of 133 days. The ship embarked 201 male convicts and no women, and disembarked 197 male convicts.

The passage of Michael and Mary BRENNAN to Australia was paid by Mary CANTWELL (nee BRENNAN), whose husband James CANTWELL had been transported to Australia for ?illegally swearing oaths? in 1831. After James CANTWELL was transported, Michael and Mary BRENNAN had cared for Mary CANTWELL and her children.
When James CANTWELL was freed after doing his time, Mary CANTWELL and the children followed him to Australia. Michael and Mary BRENNAN then followed the CANTWELLs, sailing in 1862 aboard the Abbyssinian. Michael BRENNAN died of pneumonia during the voyage, leaving his widow with nine children and another born shortly after the family arrived in Sydney.
The CANTWELLs were unable to support the BRENNAN family and the children were turned into service, leading to a break in relations between the two families.

James CANTWILL (sic), a farmer, died at Narrowgut near Morpeth, New South Wales, Australia on 27 March 1857. He was 60 years of age. The cause of death was inflammation of the lungs after an illness lasting 21 days. Death was certified by William BROWN, who last saw the deceased on 20 March 1857. The informant was Thomas CANTWELL, farmer, of Narrowgut - the son of the deceased.
James CANTWILL?s parents were Thomas CANTWILL and Mary CANTWILL, formerly FARRELL. He was born in Kilkenny, Ireland. The death certificate gives no details of his wife or marriage, but lists his children as Thomas, 34 years; Patrick, 30 years (my ancestor); and Bridget, 28 years.
James CANTWILL was buried on 20 June 1857 at the Roman Catholic Burial Ground, East Maitland, NSW, Australia. The undertaker was William Thomas MITCHELL, while the witnesses were Thomas OGLE and Moses MURPHY.
