IRE-AUS: Obituary of Mr. William McCarron 1839-1929

Extract from the "Western Champion" Monday, February 25, 1929

OBITUARY of MR WILLIAM MCCARRON, Senr.

It is with regret we (says the Peak Hill "Express") have to announce the death of Mr. William McCarron Senr., of Mingelo Street, an old and esteemed resident, which took place on Tuesday last at the ripe age of 90. Deceased, who had been ailing for some time, had been confined to his bed since the first week in December, the immediate cause of death being senile decay. The late Mr. McCarron was a native of Tyrone, north of Ireland, and arrived in Australia about 27 years age, taking up his residence in Kyneton, Victoria, where he followed his trade as a blacksmith. Subsequently he proceeded to the famous Shepparton district of which he and his brothers were the early pioneers, and entered into farming pursuits, later going to Numurkah. In 1905 he sold out and came to Tocumwal, in New South Wales, where together with his sons, he engaged in chaffcutting for seven years with much success. In 1912 the late Mr. McCarron purchased farming property in Mungery, and resided there until 1921, when he retired and came to reside in town, his son, Mr. R. McCarron, taking over the farm and is still in possession. Deceased was very well-known throughout the district, and deservedly bore a reputation for unsullied integrity, and his death is generally regretted. His two brothers, Hugh and John, predeceased him. He is surved by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. C.P. Nissen (Oxley, Vic.), Miss McCarron (Peak Hill), and three sons, Robert (Mungery), W.J. (Barrellan), and J.D. (Narromine), for whom sympathy will be expressed in their bereavement. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Presbyterian portion of the Peak Hill Cemetery, The Rev. H.S. Bunn, conducting the service.

The late Mr. McCarron, who was married to Miss Eliza Denner, of Victoria, in 1878, celebrated their golden wedding last July.

{Information provided to me by L.Kirk a MCCARRON researcher through our mutual DENNER ancestry}.

John MOST known as 'Jack' b.1874 Inverell NSW was the son of Henry MOST b.1824 Hesse, Germany and Henrietta SCHIA or BRAGIER or BROSER b.1837 Germany, they emigrated to Australia separately and ended up marrying.

IRELAND: Looking for details on Kieran aka Ciaran CANTWELL born 1894

I'm looking for any details on this Irish ancestor - Kieran also known as Ciaran CANTWELL born C1894 in either Laois (Kings) or Offaly (Queens) County. Father's name was Thomas CANTWELL and mother's name unknown unknown.

Extra information: Kieran Cantwell worked as a Blacksmith. He died young - aged only 32 years (died 1926). Several searches have been carried out in Dublin (by post) for his birth certificate but they could not find it. They would carry out a search for 5 years, and if they found nothing more money would be spent on the next 5 year search, but to no avail.

Rahan appears to be the ancestral home of this branch of Cantwells. Many graveyards have been searched in the general area, but unfortunately Rahan was not searched as this information was unknown at the time.

I thought I'd have more luck getting a helpful soul to check Parish Registers (if there is such a thing - sorry I'm an Aussie), as the family were most probably Roman Catholic.

Thanking everyone that reads this, cheerio ... Allycat.

Family Stories

Life in Australia:

James & Mary Ann came to South Australia with others from Cornwall in answer to the call for men who were accustomed to working deep lead mines. James was not a miner: he maintained/worked the steam engines, but soon after coming to Australia he was listed as a farm labourer. When gold was discovered in Victoria the family came to the Daylesford area; James was known to work a dredge at one stage, then had a farm. When eldest daughter Lavina married, the family settled on a neighbouring farm at Kialla West, where Eliza married another's neighbour's son, William McCarron, to become my grandmother.

You and Your Family:

Our story is told under the name of McCARRON

Life Before Australia:

Nothing concrete is known of the life of James and Mary Ann in England. James could not read and write, so there are no letters, but the family "legend" says the Denners came as Hugenots from Alsace to Somerset, then to Devon. This is denied by the Hugenot Society in England, which says no refugees came to England from there! The family legend continues that James, as a boy of 16, went to Cornwall to learn to work the steam engines. There he married Mary Ann Pyne, obviously, but no documents can be found. His death certificate lists two children born in Cornwall (just the county given) and apparently Richard died, because only Lavina was with them when they landed in Adelaide in 1846. We do not have a location for them in either Devon or Cornwall. James's death certificate says his father was Richard Denner, bootmaker, but he does not appear in any list we have found so far.

Children

DENNER, Henry DENNER, James DENNER, Richard
DENNER, William MCCARRON, Eliza PETHYBRIDGE, Lavina

NB: Superscript behind each descendant name represents the lineage number of that descendant.

** g grandmother, married Henry AMOR

PHOTOGRAPH is of my grandmother's parents...Henry AMOR & Caroline PARKER. If the photo looks a little odd it is because it was restored. Pic was in dreadful condition and was exceedingly small in size. It lay in my grandmother's drawers unknown to myself, the firstborn grandchild (and family historian), until an appearance just recently. With the wonders of modern technology, a fireplace was inserted in the background and pretty flowers added to the mantle. And Great Gran was given a new dress and body! It's kind of like breathing new life into one's ancestors.

Caroline PARKER married 4 Jul 1904 to Henry AMOR born 1876 Rochester VIC Australia. He was the son of William AMOR and Ann Priscilla WHEELER of Wiltshire, England. Henry & Caroline AMOR had five children, of whom four have now passed on, leaving my grandmother the last of her generation.
