My father was Ivan Rex CLIMO who met my mother Hazel Alice WENSOR nee CAVANAGH in a little rural town called Pongoroa, which is situated "out back" from Paihatua, North Island. From what my mother told me he was the acting Rural Postal Service at the time.

They were both married to other people when they met. In those days (back in the late 1950's) there was still some amount of social stigma attached to being a single mother with children. Hazel had children from her marriage to Richard WENSOR as well as children from a common marriage to Raymond Ebbett (BDM has as Eblett). LONDON.

Needless to say that neither divorce was finalized when i was conceived and born at Paihatua Maternity Annexe nine months later in December of 1961. It is said that i was in somewhat of a hurry to see the world and was almost born in the back of the hearse that Ivan used to deliver mail. I was registered under the surname WENSOR.

Sadly, in 1964 Hazel fell pregnant with another child (also the son of Ivan Rex CLIMO) whom was still born on June 12 1964. She named the infant Paul before birth so this is what i shall refer to him as. Paul is buried in the Pongoroa Cemetary, Row 6. Plot 15. Some how Paul ended up being registered under the surname LONDON and his plot is marked accordingly.Ivan Rex CLIMO buried the infant with Reverend Clegg as witness.

My parents married at the Register of Births, Deaths and marriages, Pongoroa, on the 10 March 1965.

Hazel CAVANAGH was Born in Hamilton on the 10 August 1924. Her Parents were Lillian Winifred CAVANAGH nee PRUDEN and William John Campbell CAVANAGH. Hazel passed away suddenly at Kerikeri on the 17th of January 2003. Her ashes are interred with her still born son Paul.

For those interested in the LONDON side of things, Raymond Ebbett (BDM has Eblett) LONDON he died on the 24th of February 1957 aged 39 and is buried in Grave 34, Plot 6, Main section of Mangatainoka Cemetary.

Known names of other children are John, Peter WENSOR, Ken CLIMO, Valray Doreen CLIMO, Ruth WALKER (nee WENSOR), Janice (married name GRAHAM) Her Death Certificate shows 4 living males and 4 living females at time of Death.

Ngaire Public Cemetery / Eltham Cemetary

Hawera & Normanby Star, Volume XLVI, Issue 7915, 22 February 1904, page 2

The monthly meeting of the Hawera Country Council was held on Saturday afternoon. ... Letters were read from,
From the Town Clerk of Eltham, reminding the Council that the Ngaire Public Cemetery was situate at the corner of Rawhitiroa and Anderson's roads, in the Eltham riding and the Hawera county. "Control over the cemetery." the letter went on, "has just been vested in the Eltham Borough Council, but being the only cemetery between Kaponga, Waihi, and eastern boundary of your county, it is largely used for interment of dead from Eltham, Mangatoki, and portion of Hawera ridings. This being so, this Council is strongly of opinion that some fair share of the cost of maintenance should be borne by your Council. Cr, Dive, who understands the position, will be able supply all information required." _ Cr, Dive said it had been decided by the committee to determine the charge on a population basis...

The cemetary is now known as the Eltham Cemetary situated on the corner of Rawhitiroa and Anderson's Road Rawhitiroa. Separated into distinct areas one housing the Returned Servicemen, A general area with burials from circa 1902 to circa 1990, a memorial area for still born children or infants of a young age and what appears to be an older cemetery surrounded by hedge the oldest visible (and still able to read) headstone being one dated 1856. Most of the headstones in this area were in a bad state and only just decipherable. Is this possibly the "Early Rawhitiroa" cemetary? I took many photographs of headstones that were older and still able to be read. Some of the graves themselves were in very bad order.

Pruden Home at Rawhitiroa (near Eltham)

As yet I have been largely unable to find out much information about the home other than it was built by/for the PRUDEN family. I have personally visited the relics of the homestead many times and in its heyday it must have been a beautiful home. The photographs below were taken approximately 10 years ago (2004). There was at that stage still pieces of the original glass around the outside of the house although no windows were intact. The homestead is now in a very dilapidated state. it is situated on Rawitiroa Road. The driveway access to the homestead is only 700 meters approx from the gates of the Eltham cemetary. Rawhitiroa is on the outskirts of Eltham.

Resting Place near Wharaiki Beach - Golden Bay

The only reason I know of its existence is that my paternal grandmothers (Mary Matilda CLIMO) ashes, my fathers ashes (Ivan Rex CLIMO) and one of my paternal uncles (Henry CLIMO) ashes are all scattered in this very remote location. It is off the road and up on the rise of a hill barely visible unless you are well versed with the area and know where to look. I am unaware of any documentation regarding this resting place.

Link to Wharaiki Beach - just to give an idea of how remote this area actually is
