Karl Von Bluhm was born in Prussia (Germany) in 1831. His family engaged in agricultural pursuits, and upon reaching maturity, he became a proud officer in the Prussian cavalry. After completing his military service he married Barbara (unknown last name), a young widow with a small daughter. In the early 1850's the young couple acquired a farm located on the east shore of Lake Winnebago between the communities of Stockbridge and Brothertown in Wisconsin. The family grew until there were nine children, some were born before and some were born after the interruption brought on by Civil War. In the spring of 1862 Karl received a notice that he was to be inducted into the Union army as an infantryman. For a former cavalry officer to serve in the infantry was more than he could endure. To avoid this disturbing possibility, Karl and Barbara engaged someone to look after the children and drove, in the night, thirty miles to the county seat of the adjoining county where Karl enlisted in the Union cavalry under the name of Carl Bloom. His primary duty was to serve as a scout for his unit. The major portion of his time was spent in the Southern States behind Confederate lines. On several occasions he narrowly avoided capture, he received a minor leg wound, and he had two horses shot from under him. Although the war ended in 1865, Carl was not able to rejoin his family until the spring of 1866. Carl continued as an active farmer until his death at the age of 79. Barbara lived to be 94.
