Nathaniel FOUNTAIN landlord of the Marquis of Granby public house

Nathaniel was my gx3 grandfather who owned the Marquis of Granby Public House on the corner of Percy Street and Upper Rathbone Place, just off the Tottenham Court Road in London. I visited the pub recently with my daughter, a very popular pub with space outside where you can have a drink in the warmth of the afternoon sun.

Many of the features of the pub would have been there in Nathaniel's time which was from the 1820s to the 1850s.

Nathaniel came from York and within the family there is talk that there was a family relationship with (I think)John FOUNTAIN, Dean of York.

I am having a huge problem with dates and names. I think that the name Nathaniel was much used within the FOUNTAIN family. Before me as I write, I have a fragile, all manuscript marriage certificate dated 9th December 1837. This is a marriage between Nathaniel (son of Thomas a gentleman) whose address is (the aforementioned)Percy Street, London and Amelia Elizabeth PLOWMAN (a spinster living in Regent Street Leeds and daughter of John PLOWMAN a Common Brewer). The wedding takes place in the Church of Bramley in the Parish of Leeds, Yorkshire.

I have a marriage certificate for John PLOWMAN who married Elizabeth TAYLOR on 9th October 1820. The certificate has been altered to read 1813! Their daughter, Amelia Elizabeth was born in 1816.

I have a (much damaged)extract from the book of baptisms for the Parish of St. Mary Bishophill Junior in the City of York for Nathaniel FOUNTAYNE born 20th January 1798, 5th son of Thomas FOUNTAYNE living "without North-Street Postern, (I think either) Sawyer or Lawyer and son of Nathaniel FOUNTAYNE and Mary daughter of John WELLS of Shewsby a farmer. I find it strange that Nathaniel, born in 1798, waited until 1837 before getting married. Is he the same Nathaniel, did he marry more than once or was he just a slow starter?

Nathaniel and Amelia Elzabeth Fountain went on to have four children:- Mary Elizabeth b 29th September 1838; Amelia Margaretta b 25th June 1840; Amelia born 17th July 1843 and Nathaniel Thomas FOUNTAIN b 28th October 1841. He certainly made up for lost time!

Mary Elizabeth FOUNTAIN my gx2 grandmother married Frederick Kennedy Stevens but I think they divorced in 1876. In 1877 she died. One of their children Mary Amelia Jane Stevens married George Elliott Lovegrove III . One of their children, Nora Emma married Edward Albany BRISCOMB and thence my mother Joan Marianne.

Amongst other documents, I have a frail manuscript copy of the last Will and Testament of William FOUNTAIN dated 16th May 1860. He was Nathaniel's brother living in Regents Villas, Avenue Road in the County of Middlesex. He was a very wealthy man and there was a broad spread of beneficiaries in his will. We have one or two items that may once have belonged either to him or perhaps his brother Nathaniel.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone who has carried out research on this particular Fountain family. I shall be happy to share what little documentation that I have.
