This is where I come in to try and write the story of how the Hannan family ended up in South Africa. The details of this story were told to me by my elder brother Gilbert who lives in Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa.
My grandfather James Kirkman Mockler Hannan and his brother Gilbert Alexander Hannan had sold their business interests in Ireland and were staying in a hotel in London. They were looking for business opportunities in the then ?Dominions of the British Empire? They voiced their intentions to one of the hotel staff who introduced them to Paul Kruger who was the President of the old Transvaal Republic. Paul Kruger was evidently busy at the time with negotiations with British leaders over certain issues. Paul Kruger offered my grandfather a 100 year trading concession for some trading stores from Lydenburg to Pietersburg. I believe that there were four stores between the two towns.
My grandfather and Paul Kruger became good friends. Paul Kruger evidently came to my grandfather and told him that it was time that he got married and that he had just the right girl for him. Paul Kruger introduced him to a young Miss Schreider from the Rustenburg region. It was evidently love at first sight and they duly got married.
This marriage resulted in the birth of my father, Gilbert Francis, my uncles Henry and James and my auntie Blanche.
I have a recollection of my mother wanting me to either become a bishop or a lawyer. How she reconciled these two choices is difficult to understand. I can understand the bishop side when you look at my genealogical ancestry.
I hope to have a lot more details which I will keep on adding to these writings.
