Janilye – re William (Cudmore) FURNELL, from curlycor

The profile you saw on my ‘curlycor’ journal was out of date. I have now updated the profile. I did not realize when I deleted the former profile I had also deleted your comment. Please go into my new profile to see the changes I have made. William’s obituary refers to my Great Great Grandfather William Cudmore FURNELL. My relative in Canberra, Australia (surname FURNELL) and I have been exchanging information about the FURNELL Family for some years. We cannot find any christening records in Ireland for William, but think he was born in Limerick City. However, we have found that Michael Cudmore FURNELL was christened in Dublin on 8 July 29, at St. Andrews Church, parents Samuel and Marie FURNELL. Michael’s death notice in The Age, Melbourne newspaper, dated 25 July 1888 say he had 2 brothers, the late Samuel and William, the latter living in South Melbourne. We think William Cudmore FURNELL may be related to Michael and Samuel. We did not know that a William FURNELL was the captain of the steam-tug ‘Young Australian’ from 1855. I have looked on the internet and have found a picture of the tug but not who the captains were. Do you have any information about this?

SARGEANT Ann born about 1830 in County Armagh, Ireland & FURNELL William, born about 1830, Limerick, Limerick County, Ireland

Ann SARGEANT is my GG Grandmother. She was born in Armagh, County Armagh about 1830 (Source: One of her daughter's birth certificates.). She married William FURNELL on 14 May 1855 at St Pauls, Port Adelaide, South Australia. (Source: William and Ann’s marriage certificate).
I do not know when Ann arrived in Australia but she might be the Anne Sargeant a passenger on the ship Tudor which arrived in Melbourne on 23 Jan 1854. I cannot find any record of Ann’s birth or christening in Armagh, Ireland.

William's occupation on his marriage certificate was given as 'Mariner'. William FURNELL was probably born in Limerick, Limerick County, Ireland. (Source: one of his children's birth certificates). William wrote a letter to the Trinity Board in January 1855 offering himself for the first vacancy in the Pilot Service. The Pilot Service did not have a vacancy at that time. In December 1882 William was appointed as third keeper at Eastern Shoal Lightship. He was later appointed 2nd keeper at Cape Jaffa Lighthouse and then in August was appointed Second keeper at Port Adelaide. William Cudmore FURNELL was appointed 2nd keeper at the Middle Bank Lightship on 1 February 1897. (Source: Blue Book of the Marine Board). William died on 7 October 1899 at the Middle Bank Lightship, Wallaroo and was buried at Wallaroo Cemetery.

Ann and William had 8 children – Eliza Ann FURNELL born 8 March 1856, William FURNELL born 1858 (Death certificate has father as William Cudmore FURNELL), Mary Ann FURNELL born c.1859, Frederick Cudmore FURNELL born 6 August 1861, Lydia FURNELL born 24 March 1863 at Emerald Hill, Victoria (my G. Grandmother), Josephine Lucell FURNELL born 20 October 1864, Samuel Irvine FURNELL born 1866, and Margaret Ann FURNELL born 10 April 1868. They had 3 children, Albert James THOMPSON (my Grandfather), Frederick Woodford THOMPSON and Walter William THOMPSON. Lydia died in 1894 and William THOMPSON married Lydia’s sister, Margaret Ann FURNELL in 1899.
