Auguste Linden was born in 1857 in Solingen, Germany. She came to the US in 1884. She was a dietician at St. Charles Childrens Home in St. Charles, Mo. She first married a Rev. Paulisch who died. They had no children.On Jun 6, 1887 in Quincy, Il. she married Rev. Eduard Berger who was a widow with seven children: Edward, Pauline, Laura, Paul, John, Herman, and Frederich. She had five children during her marriage to Rev. Berger: Lydia, Hugo, Augusta, Eugenia ( my Grandmother ), and Olivia.Eduard was a minister with the Evangelical Church and served churches in Marthasville, Augusta, and Carondelet, Mo. and Alhambra and Brighton, Il. Eduard died on Jan. 3, 1906 and Auguste died in 1939. Eugenia(my grandmother) married Fred G. Scheffel on Sept 3, 1912 and they had three children: Loraine( my Mother ), Elvera, and Bellmont(Butch). In their early married years they lived in Madison County, Il.but later moved to Brighton, Il. Fred died on Dec 26, 1968 with complications of Diabetes. Eugenia died on Feb 26, 1978. Loraine married Rev. Herbert Rinderknecht on Jan 20, 1944 in Brighton, Il. They had two children: Diane(me) and Kenneth. Herbert served churchs in Iowa, Mo. and Il.Herbert died on Aug 8, 2000 and Loraine died on Oct 16, 2004. Diane married Charles Presnell on April 02, 1966 at St. Johns United Church of Christ in Pana, Il. They had four children : Mark, Tami, Cory, and Trey.Charles died of lung cancer on Oct 3, 2004.

Eduard Gottlob Berger was born in Minden, Westfalen, Germany on April 28, 1836.His father was a Prussian officer and Eduard was sent to a cadet institute in Pottsdam and appointed to a military career. However, this gentle and religious young man was not happy in this calling and so he became a tutorin the Evangelical Orphanage in Barmen and then teacher in the girts high school. In 1858 he went to the mission house in Berman to become a missionary. However, some of the young were assigned to the Langenberger Society for the Germans in America. One of them was Eduard. After his ordination, he came to the US in 1864.He immediately joined the Evangelical Synod and took his first charge in Marhtasville, Mo. He first married in 1865, Eugenie von Rague. He and Eugenie had seven children: Edward, Pauline, Laura, Paul, John, Herman, and Frederich.Eugenie died in 1886.In 1887 he married Auguste nee Linden Paulisch who was the widow of Rev. Paulisch. Eduard and Auguste had five children: Hugo, Lydia, Augusta, Eugenia Julia( my Grandmother), and Olivia.Eduard served churches in Marthasville, Augusta, and Carondelet, Mo. and Alhambra and Brighton, Il. Eduard,my Great Grandfather, died on Jan 03, 1906. My Great Grandmother, Auguste, died in 1939. My Grandmother, Eugenia, married Fred G. Scheffel on Sept 03, 1912. They had three children: Elvera, Bellmont(Butch),and Loraine( my Mother).My Grandfather Fred died on Dec 26, 1968 and my Grandmother Eugenia died on Feb 26, 1978. My Mother Loraine who was in the church choir in Brighton married Rev. Herbert Rinderknecht on Jan 21, 1944 in Brighton,Il,in the Evangelical and Reformed Church there where he was the pastor. They had two children: Diane Helen ( me ), and Kenneth. Loraine died on Oct 16, 2004 and Herbert died on Aug 8, 2000. Diane married Charles Presnell on April 02, 1966 in the United Church of Christ in Pana, Il. and they had four children: Mark, Tami, Cory, and Trey.Charles died on Oct. 3, 2004. I am a certified nursing assistant and geriatric care specialist in a nursing home in Pana. I also help my son Mark in our concession trailer and in our Tropical Sno stand.

Christian F. Halwe was born in Germany and married Charlotte Becker. They had at least one child, my Great Grandmother, Friederike Charlotte Halwe. She was born Sept 11, 1852 in Lubbecke, Westfalen, Preussen, Germany.She was christened on Sept 26, 1852 at the Evangelical Church in Lubbecke. She came to the US in 1871. She first married Herman Heinrich Indermark and they had two sons, Herman Jr., and Louis. Her husband died in 1876. She then became reacquainted with Wilhelm Liekweg whom she had known in Germany and had been a confirmation classmate of hers. They married on May 01, 1879 in St. Louis, Mo. They had eight children: Amelia, Louisa( my grandmother), Marie, William, Jr., Fred C., Lena, Anna, and Clara.Amelia died at the age of 25 and had never married. Louisa married Fred H. Rinderknecht, Marie(Mamie) married Edward Rinderknecht, William married Nola, Fred married Edna,Anna married Anthony Schnelle, Lena married Edward Rinderknecht after her sister Marie died, and Clara married Clarence Kohring, Sr.They lived in St. Louis where Wilhelm had a rope halter shipping company. They also had a farm near Sparta, Il.Louisa, my grandmother, and her husband Fred Rinderknecht had three children: Herman, Helen, and Herbert( my father.Herman died in infancy and Helen died at age 27. She was an accomplished organist. Herbert married Loraine Scheffel on Jan. 21, 1944 in the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Brighton, Il. Herbert was a minister with the Evangelical and Reformed Church which is now called the United Church of Christ.They had two children Diane Helen(me) and Kenneth Herbert.Herbert died on Aug 08, 2000 in St. Louis, Mo.and Loraine died on Oct 16, 2004.Diane married Charles Presnell on April 2, 1966 in the United Church of Christ in Pana, Il. They had four children: Mark, Tami, Cory, and Trey.Charles died on Oct 3, 2004. Wilhelm F. Liekweg, my Great Grandfather, was born June 27, 1850 in Lubbecke, Westfalen, Preussen, Germany.He was born of rather poor but very religious farming parents. He was baptised in the Evangelical Church of Germany when he was 10 days old.At the age of 7 he went to school where Bible study was the subject most emphasized by his parents.At age 14 he was confirmed in the Evangelical Church and did not go to school after that. He worked on the family farm but did not like this work and dreamed of America and learning the skill of rope making. The next year he began to learn the art of making ropes and halters and at age 19 in 1869 he came to America arriving in new York on Oct 18. He did not stay long there and went directly to Madison, Wisconsin.He had relatives there- an aunt and uncle and his older brother Fritz who had come to the US before him. In 1869 William( as he was now called) and Fritz went to St. Louis, Mo.Fritz took a job with a rope company but William did not.William worked as a bartender in several St. Louis area bars and in 1873 went to Memphis Tn. but did not remain there either. He returned to St. Louis again and worked as a bartender. He returned to Memphis after a yellow fever epidemic was brought under control and got a job on a steamship, the West Wind, working his way up to first mate.William was especially interested in life of the Negro. Having been raised in Germany he was able to view their situation openmindedly void of prejudice and therefore could not understand the way they were treated. He maintained his attitude that since they were freed,they should be treated as equals. William remained on the West Wind for four years going from New Orleans to St. Louis on the mississippi River. He probably would have remained there longer but he fell overboard and neary drowned so he left the ship at St. Louis and took a job working with his brother at the rope works.He became reacquainted with Friederike nee Halwe Indermark who was a confirmation classmate in Germany. Her first husband, Herman Heinrich Indermark,had died and left her with two small sons, Herman Jr., and Louis. On May 01, 1879 he married Friederike.They had eight children: Amelia, Louisa(my Grandmother) who married Fred Rinderknecht, Marie, William Jr., Fred C., Lena, Anna, and Clara.William continued working as a ropemaker for several years and finally in 1882 he acquired some property and was able to build his own factory and a house for his family beside it. His business prospered.In1903 he purchased 80 acres of farmland near Sparta, Il. and later added to this another 150 acres.Although his sons usually worked this land, William still had a rural feeling in him and visited the property quite often.He ws also interested in education and took night classes, beconing a rather intelligent, self educated man.During WW1 William became a victum of circumstance, his birth and although he had lived in the Us for nearly 50 years,because he was raised in Germany, he became "the enemy" to people who had previously thought of him as an American with an accent. After 1900 with the invention of the automobile, the war, and labor unions, his business greatly declined. He was growing older too. His sons and daughters ran the business for a time, but even they had to search for other jobs as business continued to decline. However, the business never completely ended until long after his death as his daughter and grandsons continued until about the 1950's. My Great Grandmother, Friederike, died on Jul 27, 1924 and William died on Jun 14, 1939. My Grandmother married Fred G. Rinderknecht on Aug 29, 1906 in St. Louis. They had three children: Hermen, Helen, and Herbert. herman died in infancy. Helen died at age 27 and was an accomplished organist. Herbert, my father, became a minister with the Evangelical and Reformed Church.. He attended Elmhurst College and Eden Seminary. My Grandmother Louisa died on Jan 7, 1972 and my Grandfather Fred died on Jan 22,1950. Herbert, who was born on Feb 27, 1911. Herbert served churches in Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois. He married my Mother, Loraine Scheffel, on Jan 20, 1944 in Brighton, Il where he was serving as pastor. They had two children Diane Helen(me) and Kenneth Herbert. Herbert died on Aug 8, 2000 and Loraine died on Oct 16, 2004.Diane, who was born on March 24, 1946,married Charles Presnell on April 2, 1966 in St. Johns United Church of Christ in Pana, Il.They had four children: Mark, Tami, Cory, and Ajia. Diane is a Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Care Specialist at a nursing home in Pana and helps her son Mark in their concession business and Tropical Sno stand.Charles died on Oct 3, 2004 from lung cancer.

Anna E. Zimmermann was born June 02,1859. Her parents were Henry and Minnie Zimmerman. Anna was born in Germany. On Sept 23, 1877 she married Herman E. Scheffel.They lived in Jersey County Illinois and later Macoupin County Illinois near Brighton. They had six children: Frank, Lena who married a Barth, Emma who died at age 19,Olga who married a Schneider, Herbert, and Fred G. ( my grandfather) who married Eugenia Berger.Anna died on Aug 29, 1921.She is buried in Bott Cemetery in Brighton, Il.

Christina Brummer was born on Feb 20, 1826 in Germany. She married Johann Gottfried Scheffel.They had at least one son, Herman E. and possibly a son Paul. They lived in both Jersey County Illinois and later in Macoupin County. She died on Nov 15, 1896. Her father was possibly J. Karl Brummer.She is buried in Bott Cemetery in Brighton, Il.

Herman E. Scheffel was born May 22, 1851 in Germany. He came to the US in 1870 and settled in Jersey County Illinois. He was a farmer.On Sept 23, 1877 he married Anna E. Zimmermann.They had six children: Frank, Lena who married a Barth, Emma who died at age 19, Olga who married a Schneider, Herbert, and Fred G. ( my grandfather) who married Eugenia Berger.Herman died on April 11, 1927.Hermans parents were possibly Johann Gottfried and Christina nee Brummer Scheffel. He also may have had A BROTHER Paul whose wife was Louisa and who had at least two children, Otto and Carl.

Anna Phillipina Ries was born in St. Louis, MO. about 1857. On Sept 08, 1876 she married Herman Rinderknecht, Sr. They had four sons:John C., Fred H.,(my Grandfather), Edward F., and Herman, Jr.Her parents were possibly John and Margaret Ries born in Bavaria.Anna died on Aug. 25, 1937 in St. Louis.

Herman Rinderknecht, Sr. was born in Switzerland around 1852. He came to the US in 1865 and settled in St. Louis, Mo.On Sept 08, 1876 he married Anna Phillipina Ries. They had four sons:John C.,Fred H.(my grandfather),Edward F., and Herman, Jr.When he first came to the US he worked in a milk dairy but later owned and operated a grocery store in St. Louis.
