My mother was Jean Seton LAMONBY. She was born in Berkshire, England, in 1922. Her Mother was Ethel HOUGH (later BROWN), born about 1888, in Cheshire, England. Ethel's parents being William Thomas BROWN from Welford in Berkshire, England, and Mary HOUGH, from Lancashire. He was the son of a Welford grocer and baker. When Ethel was born, William and Mary were not married, but they did marry about 2 years later.

Ethel married George LAMONBY in about 1920. George was born in Bedlington in Northumberland, England in 1884. I do not know much of his early years, except that his mother died when he was young and he was brought up by his maternal grandmother, Jane CLOSE when his father remarried. I also know that he had at least 2 siblings, 2 sisters younger than himself: Alvinza, born on 14 Jan 1885 and Jane Seaton, born in 1887. My grandfather told my mother that she was named after her aunt. I do not know who brought up his sisters.

George fought in the first world war and was invalided out towards the end. He was sent to an institution in Berkshire to recover, which is how he met Ethel. In Berkshire he worked as a gamekeeper.

His mother was Isabella Ann CLOSE, born about 1864 in Shildon, County Durham, England. Isabella married William LAMONBY in 1881 in Morpeth, Northumberland. They were both living in Bedlington at the time. Isabella died, at the age of 24, in 1887. William remarried in 1888.

Isabella's mother was Jane CLOSE, born about 1829 in Mitford, Northumberland. She is described as a confectioner in the UK census of 1881. I do not know her maiden name -I assume she was married as she is noted as such on the census, but her husband was not present for the census, and I have not yet identified him for certain.

William LAMONBY was born in Allendale, Northumberland in about 1850, and he was a coalminer. His father was Joseph LAMONBY, a merchant tailor, born in about 1820 in Wigton, Cumberland, England, and his mother was Ann FINLINSON, born in Bolton, Cumberland (not Bolton, Lancashire). They were married in Wigton, Cumberland on 26th Aug 1843.

My great grandmother was Charlotte ELLIOTT. She was born in Radford, Nottingham, England in about 1859. She married my great grandfather, William DICKINSON, in Nottingham in 1878. They had at least 2 children, William and Daniel, in 1879 and 1880. Charlotte is described as a lace hand on the 1881 UK census. So far I have not been able to trace her parents, but there are many Elliotts!
