Abraham & Mary Bush (Tinker) of Kent, Lambeth, England & NZ

I am having trouble find information on My 5x grandparents lives before they left England for New Zealand in the 1850's.

ABRAHAM BUSH (born c 1800, London England, died 1873, Nelson, NZ). It has been a challenge finding his parents or siblings. There are many Bush families in London and Kent at that time. After he married MARY TINKER (born 1800 Kent, Eng, died 1877, Nelson, NZ) at Erith, Kent in 1821. First child Abraham William was born in Lambeth and it seems they stayed in that area until the early 1830's. An 1841 census shows Abraham, Mary & Abraham William as living in Newington.

Abraham & Mary went to NZ about 1850's as he is first noted in a newspaper c 1856. I have searched passenger lists and cannot as yet find a listing for them. I have found children and grand children but can't find when they arrived. Son Thomas bc 1829 and his wife Eliza + 4 children and also Thomas's brother Abraham William arrived on the "John Masterton" at Nelson in Feb, 1857. The families set up lives mainly as Publican's, (all Abraham and Mary's children were Publicans in thier lives at one stage (daughter Mary Elizabeth Cleaver took over the licence for the "Plough Inn", Nelson after her husband died in 1856). They were also Cabinet Makers/Carpenters, in Nelson. (Thomas Bush).

Baines & Tulk Families of NSW, Australia

I am researching the above families. Mainly James Thomas Baines (born Glebe,1874 - died "Wattle Grove", Eastwood 1945) and his wife Jessie May nee Buckland (born Grafton 1885 - died Parramatta 1972) and their daughters (Aurora, Jessie Francis, Constance, Edna & Elsie) families. I have alot of information on this family tree. I would love to hear from any relatives.

BUSH - CANT, England and New Zealand

Henry Silvester Bush (parents Abraham & Mary Bush (nee Tinker) married Ellen Cant in 1858 in Nelson, NZ. Ellen died at her in-laws the Steamboat Tavern, Nelson in April, 1869 aged 31 years old. I'm not sure how many children they had together or her family history. Any information would be appreciated.

BUSH - LEWIS, England and New Zealand

Abraham William Bush (parents Abraham & Mary nee Tinker) was born in England in 1822. He married Elizabeth Lewis in August, 1847, Newington, England.

It is thought that she died before he headed to NZ with his brother Thomas and his wife and 4 children in 1857. Any information would be appreciated.

Bush - Tinker - Nathan - Coker - Clark - O'Grady - Hynes - Glassad - Hession - Moggan - Zeppel - Voigt - Klitscher - Reschke - Graetz - Lehmann - Holtzsch - Schrapel

Our maternal family history has taken me on a crazy journey that's no-where near over yet. I knew next no nothing regarding the Bush line when I started but here is quick run-down of what I have found so far.

Abraham Bush (bc 1800 in England)he married Mary Tinker in Kent in 1825. They had 5 children and ended up in New Zealand in 1856. The family line that leads to me is as follows:

Thomas Bush (bc 1827, Surrey, England) married Eliza Clark in 1846 in Surrey, England.
Thomas James Bush (b 1852, Kent, England) married Mary Ann Nathan in 1876 in Wanganui, NZ
Sidney Francis Bush (b 1883, Christchurch, NZ) married Muriel Augusta O'Grady in 1907, NZ
Eric Charles Harold Bush (b 1908, Auckland, NZ) married Mona Adeline Zeppel in 1939, Vic

Eric and Mona (Zeppel) Bush were very well known dancers/actors/singers for theatre company J. C. Williamson's for many years touring Australia and New Zealand. Eric was in a film - with his mate Peter Finch, jumped into radio - he was Jack Davey's producer for many years and got to meet all the stars of the day. Then advertising - involved in ads like "Mr Sheen", "Louie the Fly", "Coca Cola" and many more. Eric's uncle (Sidney's brother) Ernest 'Pirie' Bush made a name for himself in theatre in New Zealand and Australia.

This family history obsession all started when I was about 6 years old when my Mother opened up an old box, filled with family treasures...............

I have alot of information on all the families listed, and would love to hear from you.

Warm Regards

Bush, Tinker, Nathan, Hearn, O'Grady, Illidge, Zeppel

ABRAHAM BUSH (born London England, c 1800 died 1873, Nelson, NZ) married MARY TINKER (born 1800 Kent, Eng, died 1877, Nelson, NZ) in 1821 at Erith, Kent, England.

Their son THOMAS BUSH Snr (born c 1829, Eng, died 1905) married in 1846, England to Eliza Clark (born c1817 - 1820, Eng, died 1903, Wanganui).

THOMAS & ELIZA and their 4 children boarded the "John Masterton" on 17/10/1856 in London and arrived in Nelson, New Zealand on 8/2/1857. Thomas's brother Abraham William Bush also travelled with them. (Not sure yet as to when the parents Abraham & Mary came to New Zealand.

ABRAHAM set up life in Nelson as Innkeeper of "The Travellers Rest", Appleby. He went on to run other establishments over the years.

THOMAS BUSH (Abraham's son) worked his trade, Cabinet Maker in Nelson before turning to running the "Victoria Hotel" in Nelson and later "Old House at Home" in Westport. In the 1870's they moved to Wanganui where he was Undertaker for a couple of years. They ended back in Nelson where he died in Nelson Hospital in 1905.

THOMAS & ELIZA's son THOMAS JAMES BUSH (born c 1852, Eng) married a daughter of HENRY ANTHONY NATHAN & JANE (HEARN) - MARY ANN NATHAN (bc 1856, Wanganui) on 17th March, 1876 at her fathers residence, Wanganui. Children:

THOMAS & MARY ran T. Bush's Drapery store in "Alpha House" Victoria Ave, Wanganui. They then moved the premises to Ridgway Street opposite the Princess's Theatre and was noted regularly for his outstanding window displays. After many years they moved to Wellington where he was Manager of the Union Clothing Co. He was President of many Clubs over the years from Bowling Clubs to Regatta's to School Boards and was involved in Wellington council. He was very well known in Bowling circles.

His wife MARY ANN died in 1925. The following year in 1926 THOMAS JAMES BUSH married his wife's sister - SUSAN HEARN (NATHAN) COKER. He being c 74 yrs and she c 68 yrs. They enjoyed 4 years of marriage before SUSAN died in 1930. THOMAS JAMES BUSH died in 1931.

I am still gathering information on the following:

SYDNEY FRANCIS BUSH b 1883 Christchurch. d 1932
Sydney & Muriel had 1 son who is my Grandfather:

PATRICK O'GRADY b 1864, Galway, Ireland
d 1922, Wanganui?

MARY AGNES GLASSAD b 1863, Mellow, Cork, Ireland
or (Glassett) d 1897 Takapau, NZ, 33 yrs old

There is still so much to be found out regarding the family tree, but day by day I'm getting there!

Ernest Pirie Bush

Ernest was born in 1889 in New Zealand. His parents were Thomas James BUSH and Mary Ann (NATHAN). Ernest ended up performing in the Theatre in New Zealand and in Australia. His family settled in South Australia, Gawler I think. He was my Great Grandfathers brother and I do not know much about him at all.

O'Grady/Grady Family in New Zealand

The earliest New Zealand O'Grady/Grady relative we have found is Malachy/Malachi O'Grady who was married to Bedelia (Bridget) Hynes in Ireland (Galway)? before they sailed to New Zealand. It is a mystery as to the exact date that they arrived in New Zealand and from where exactly they disembarked from. Some of Bridget's brothers were born in Ireland but left Scotland for NZ in 1861. It looks like it might have been 1862-1864 that they arrived. Any idea's?
