THE CHILDREN OF "SOMERVILLE" HENRY GOMM AND MARGARET (NEE MONK) OF TODAY'S MENTONE AND SOMERVILLE, VIC., AUST.

I call Henry "Somerville Henry" to distinguish him from Henry Gomm of Rosebud (also his brothers, William and Thomas)and their father whom I refer to as Convict Henry. When Somerville Henry claimed in his 1888 biography to have been born in 1839 and come to the colony in the same year, I suspected that he was trying to conceal something, perhaps that he was the son of Convict Henry. After six months of research, I discovered that he had arrived in 1843 aged 4, and years later I found his obituary*, very detailed and correct! If I'd found the obituary in the first place, Graham Whitehead's fascinating story may never had been written.
TWO DISTINCT GOMM FAMILIES

*The obituary and much detail about the family are included in my MURRAY GOMM journal whose link can be found in the HARRY FALBY GOMM information at the end of this journal.

THIS JOURNAL IS BEING WRITTEN IN PREPARATION FOR A JOURNAL ABOUT SOMERVILLE'S STREET AND PLACE NAMES AND ALSO TO ESTABLISH WHERE THE CHILDREN WERE BORN.

MOORmeans the parish of Moorabbin and a comparison of the parish map
and Melway reveals that it adjoined the parish of Prahran at North Rd, extended from the bay to Warrigal Rd and went all the way south to Ricketts Point and the south end of Warrigal Rd.

FRANKSTON as a place of birth could mean the PARISH OF FRANKSTON, north of Eramosa Rd West, particularly the triangle bounded by Gomms Rd and Frankston Flinders Rd (Melway 107 D11.)

Additional information in bold type comes from my manuscript THE MYSTERIOUS HENRY GOMM, OBTAINED FROM ROOTSWEB.

Wedding. GRAF-GOMM. A wedding of local importance was celebrated quietly at St. Mary's Star of the Sea, West Melbourne, on Wednesday last, the contracting parties being Mr David J. Graf, of Ascot Vale and Miss Beatrice Ethel Gomm, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Gomm, "Glenhoya" Somerville. The bride, who wore a handsome dress of cream crepe de cheyne, over glace silk, was given away by her brother, Mr C. E.Gomm, Mr W. H. Gomm acting as groomsman. The bridegroom's gifts to the bride were a handsome pearl pendant and beautifully bound prayer book. The happy couple left by the Sydney express for the Blue Mountains where they will spend their honeymoon. The bride's travelling dress was a tailor made costume of Navy blue with wedgewood blue hat. The presents were numerous, many being received from the Victorian railway staff.(P.2, Mornington and Dromana Standard, 14-8-1909.)

Harry's great-grandson, Kevin Gomm, has a publishing company called DIGGER PRESS. The website for DIGGER PRESS shows that Kevin looks very similar to our local footy hero. It also reveals that Harry fought in France and Belgium during W.W.1, suffering from the effects of mustard gas. He had earlier served as an armed guardsman at the Princess Royal Fortress at Albany throughout the 1890's.

Harry's second son, Frank (see previous comment)was Kevin's grandfather and was one of the key individuals who oversaw the bringing of the Desert Corps Memorial from Egypt and its erection on Mount Clarence at Albany. Frank was awarded the BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL for services to Legacy. Kevin's father, Brian was a National Serviceman and a talented pianist. We all know that Darwin was bombed during W.W.2 but it comes as a surprise to me that Western Australian towns suffered air raids too. Drawing on his family traditions, Kevin was an accomplished musician but is now the foremost authority on Western Australia military history relative to W.W.2.

Did the musical talent come from the Gomms?
Gunner Gomm was heard on the local concert platform for the first time in the song "Little Nell," and received a fair share of applause.
(P.3, Albany Advertiser, 4-11-1899.)

The Misses Grant sang a couple of duets very well; Mr H.Gomm doing justice to two very fine songs. (P.2, Mornington Standard, 29-3-1894.CONCERT AT MORNINGTON JUNCTION.)N.B. Mornington Junction had been known as Baxter's Flat until a railway line branched off to Mornington, and is now known as Baxter. Was this Henry, who was extremely deaf by 1899, or Harry, before his departure to the west?

Dance music was also supplied by Mrs Griffiths and Miss Jessie Gomm.
(P.2, Mornington Standard, 7-7-1898.) Mr H.Gomm Snr rendered an item but it was unclear whether he sang or recited. Ted (Charles Edward)certainly sang and Isabella Jessie obviously played an instrument.

So it seems as if military historian,Kevin Gomm, inherited at least part of his musical ability from Somerville genes! The big question now is whether Murray can sing !!!

We know the link between the Gomms of Somerville, Victoria and Albany, Western Australia was Harry Falby Gomm. While trying to find details of Harry's involvement in the council at Albany or an obituary on google, I found details of his son, Thomas Falby Gomm's wedding in 1932 on the outback pioneers website.

GOMM Thomas Felby, 1932 Dec 12, Norseman. Methodist Church, HARSLETT Lilian Grace Allen, Ba/Prospector, Albany, Norseman, GOMM Harry Felby/ ...

And then I found that the W.A. branch of the family had its own MURRAY Gomm.
In view of not having found any marital connection with a Murray family, I can only assume that the name was part of the family folklore taken west by Harry. (See after the ORANJE TRACTOR excerpt.)

His story: Murray Gomm
Murray was raised in the Albany region, on a dairy farm and fled, as most school-leavers do, to continue his education in Perth. Although he studied physical education, most of his work has been in the health promotion field. He has a naturally 'green thumb' which he clearly inherited from his mother, and a penchant for hard work like his father - who is still farming on the adjacent property. Murray is the creative genius of the oranje tractor team: he took the photo of the tractor that's been used on the label, and he developed the name oranje tractor.

THE MURRAY-GOMM CONNECTION?
Harry probably played cricket with the Murray boys.(P.S. note DEVLIN!)
Somerville Railways play Hastings on the ground of the former, whose team will be chosen from the following, Docwra, Barrett, Harboard, Gomm 3, Beauland, Devlin, Rule Murray and Firth. (P.2, Mornington Standard, 4-1-1894.)

While the majority of the Murray grants were on the south side of Mornington-Tyabb Rd between Stumpy Gully and Coolart Rds (14AB, 13, 8A Bittern of 445 acres) and 6A Tyabb (144 acres granted 1875, Melway 107 G8, Inghams site)the following death notice indicates that the Murrays would have been well acquainted with the Gomms outside of sport and possibly great friends. The post office was probably diagonally across the railway crossing from Henry Gomm's Somerville Hotel.

GRACE E. CALDWELL'S CLAIM

From NELLIE MELBA MUSEUM TIMELINE 1880-1899
1884

January 19
Nellie and baby George left Marian and returned to Melbourne (Thompson/McPherson, Melba Important Dates p3.)

May 17
As Mrs Armstrong, Nellie made her professional debut as a concert artist in the Melbourne Town Hall for the Metropolitan Liedertafel.
(Thompson/McPherson, Melba Important Dates p4.)

1885

January 24
Nellie sang at the Grand Concert held in the Mechanics` Institute, Sorrento to raise funds of the cemetery fence. Raised £20.
(Concert program, Nepean Historical Society)

Hopefully the same mistake will not be made regarding Harmony Lee when she achieves the fame she so richly deserves. It won't have been in the Rosebud over 50's concert on 6-9-2018 or the PENINSULA SHOWCASE at the same venue on 4-10-2018 because I'm sure she has performed several times already in public with the Maroondah Choristers.

When I first read Dame Nellie Melba's biographies, my interest had been prompted by Grace Caldwell's letter, but her father's business interests became my main focus. He was indirectly connected to the renaming of Stephen St. in Melbourne* and partly responsible for the decline in demand for Mornington Peninsula lime.
*Exhibition Street, Melbourne
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Opened 1837
Exhibition Street is a major street in the central business district of Melbourne, Australia. The street is named after the International Exhibition held at the Royal Exhibition Building in 1880, and was previously known as Stephen Street from 1837. The street runs roughly north-south and was laid out as part of the original Hoddle Grid.[1]

Surprisingly DAVID MITCHELL'S BIOGRAPHY
makes only passing reference to his involvement in the Lilydale lime industry*.
*CAVE HILL LIMESTONE QUARRY

Last night, I wondered when exactly Nellie had promoted the concert at Sorrento, because Grace had only specified the date by stating that someone was mine host at a Sorrento hotel. On reading Nellie's biographies again, I was struck by her determination to succeed. One thing she hadn't resorted to was busking!

DETERMINATION PLUS!
Given that probably 90% of the population today has no real interest in opera and that those passing by are focussed on other matters, (looking at market stalls, what they need to buy, talking to companions, dodging toddlers, dogs on leads and mobility scooters, finishing their shopping on time etc.), only a handful of today's passers-by would stop and listen to a young opera singer. When that young singer sounds as good as Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland or Yvonne Kenny, surely a more appreciative audience is deserved. It was in April 2018 that I first heard Harmony Lee at Dromana Hub and was amazed at her talent. Thus the idea of a PENINSULA SHOWCASE was born. Four other sensational young buskers will also perform. Hopefully it will persuade Mornington Peninsula Shire to revive the old-time concerts, building community spirit while providing appreciative audiences for young performers of fine music.

JOHN JOSEPH DEVINE, (and other descendants of Pt. Nepean pioneers, John and William Devine) BURIED AT THE MELBOURNE GENERAL CEMETERY, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.

John and William Devine were early settlers at Point Nepean, and Thomas, their brother died there in 1853. I am currently detailing the children of John and William (many of whom are buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery) in my journal:

DEVINE.—On the 9th December, 1913, at the residence of his niece, "Walworth," Valetta street, Malvern, John Joseph Devine, eldest son of the late William Devine, lime merchant, Melbourne, aged 73 years (Interred privately, Melbourne General Cemetery.)

No birth record was found for John on Victorian BDM, which probably indicates that he was born in Ireland.

FROM MY JOURNAL "GEORGE BAKER, LIME MERCHANT INVOLVED NEAR PORT PHILLIP HEADS AND HIS DEVINE FIRST WIFE, VIC., AUST."
My apologies for any repetition and a rather higgledy-piggledy lay-out of the information caused by three different sources providing breakthoughs, namely Victorian BDM, cemetery records and family notices on trove.I hope I have made it clear that Captain Thomas Devine was buried in the stated plot because he was the husband of Amelia Agnes. Which reminds me that I didn't reveal the names of his parents, so I'll do that first. There didn't seem to have been a death notice but at least it is confirmed that the cemetery record is correct regarding his name.

THE DEVINES
Some information about the Devines has been published in comments.
Victorian BDM shows that both John and William Devine were living at Point Nepean where some of their children's births took place and the maiden names of their wives are given consistently but my main aim at the moment is to find where they afterwards lived so I can find the death records of John, William and their wives. Here's a good start.

JOHN DEVINE'S FAMILY.
DEVINE.—The Friends of the late Miss SARAH DEVINE of Bendigo, daughter of the late John Devine (formerly lime merchant, of this city), are informed that her remains will be interred in the Melbourne General Cemetery. (Could be John, born in 1847 as his death record (1898 reg. no.17112)gives his age as 51 but his mother was supposedly Mary unknown.Given that he was buried in the same plot, I believe the mother's name was a mistake.)

There were no family notices regarding him but he was supposed to be a former Bendigo resident.
Suddenly.—A man named John Devine, aged 51, said to be an ex-resident of Bendigo, died very suddenly on Saturday at the residence of his brother-in-law, No. 65 Simpson street, East Melbourne. The deceased had been
in ill-health for the last two months, and came to the above address about a fortnight ago. He was not seen by a medical man, and while drinking some wine he suddenly fell back and expired. Dr. T. Boyd was called in, but found that life was extinct. The doctor declined to give a certificate as to the cause of death, and the police were communicated with. THE DEVINES.
There are maps on pages 56 and 57 of C.N.Hollinshed's LIME LAND LEISURE showing "10.Devine Huts" at the south east corner of Pt Nepean Rd and Hemston Avenue (bottom right corner of Melway 156J3) and "15. Devine Bros." at White Cliff (just on the east side of White Cliff, Melway 168 D3.) I had always assumed that the lime kiln standing at that spot was a wholly created replica but it seems possible that the old Devine kiln may have just been tidied up by the removal of many decades of rubbish and maybe the lining of the kiln with bricks. A member of the Rye Rotary and Lions Clubs might be able to shed light on what work was required to create in 1989 what we see today.
https://poi-australia.com.au/points-of-interest/australia/victoria/rye/lime-kiln-rye-foreshore-opposite-2543-point-nepean-rd-rye-mornington-peninsula-vic/
EXTRACT. Set just behind the sand dunes at the base of Whitecliffs Lookout, a replica Lime Kiln has been built by the Rotary & Lions Clubs of Rye in 1989. It has been sited where once the historic ‘Devine Kiln’ stood, as well as an old loading point where bullock teams would drag wagons loaded with bagged lime into the shallow waters, transfer it to barges, then to small sailing ships, to be transported to a special Limecraft Dock which was constructed c 1849, near King Street in Melbourne.

John and William Devine held separate leases in 1852, probably near the huts. These are plotted on another map in LAND LIME LEISURE.

https://nepeanhistoricalsociety.asn.au/history/quarantine-station/quarantine-background/
"In October 1852 Lieutenant-Governor La Trobe wrote to the General Surveyor Robert Hoddle enquiring as to the date of the expiration of the inhabitant’s leases. He was duly informed that the leases were renewed annually and were set to expire at the end of the year.

In Reply came the following nominal roll from Hoddle on 27th October, 1852:

Name Rent
Daniel Sullivan £12
Robert White £12
William Devine £12
John Devine £12
James Ford £12
H. G. Cameron £12

La Trobe’s response was to direct the Harbour Master to:

Take such steps as may be found desirable in withdrawing from licenced occupation such portion of land as may be required for the purpose of the immediate formation of a quarantine station at the Heads.13"

by itellya on 2018-07-29 02:08:01
Silly me! It's some years since I inspected the replica lime kiln but I'd only needed to look at the photo to see that the kiln was lined, not with bricks, but with limestone rubble (which was in such plentiful supply that it was used for some time to make the often-mentioned WHITE ROADS which were very smooth but caused glare, were slippery at times and could deteriorate quickly once the process started.)

GEORGE BAKER, LIME MERCHANT INVOLVED NEAR PORT PHILLIP HEADS AND HIS DEVINE FIRST WIFE, VIC., AUST.

Was it Henry Cadby Wells who burnt lime with Robert Rowley in the early 1840's, (during which time his first surviving child, Polly, later Mrs David Kelly, was born on the site of the Koonya Hotel soon after his arrival) and partnered Robert Rowley again from 1849 in a successful but short lived crayfishing venture?

Was it lime merchant, George Baker for whom Edward Russell was apparently working in 1861 according to evidence in the great Schapper Point electoral conspiracy?

Baker was, like William Allison Blair, a lime merchant involved on BOTH sides of Port Phillip Bay, apparently heading a company with a fleet of lime craft. If he'd been near Point Nepean in 1859, surely he would have signed the petition opposing the building of a fence from White Cliff to the ocean beach which was promoted by Peter Purves and James Ford.

HE DID. The following would have been based on information contained in Peter Wilson's ON THE ROAD TO ROSEBUD or Jenny Nixon's FAMILY, CONNECTIONS, SORRENTO AND PORTSEA, both of which discussed the petition. Jenny believed, despite claims to the contrary, that Clark's Cottage was built by a man named Wells in about 1850.

FROM ONE OF MY JOURNALS.
Many of the limeburners would have been illiterate. Their names would have been printed (by Peter Purves or James Sandle Ford) and followed by "their mark", usually a cross (X). The names on the petition opposing construction of the fence were: James Ford, Peter Purves, Robert Rainey, James Patterson, George Mitchell, Robert Quinan, George White, Robert White, Richard White, Jeremiah White , James Swan,
Arthur Robinson MATCD (presumably the other Melbourne resident), Alfred Evans, Nathan Page, John Dillon, Edward Russell, Patrick Sullivan, Edward M.Williams, Richard White, George White, Isaac Prout, Owen Cain, Mrs John Devine, Ben Stennigan (Stenniken), Timothy Sullivan, Thomas Clancy, George Baker, Charles Dean, Mrs Edward Skelton, Samuel Clark, Samuel Williams, Richard Kenna (Melbourne resident!)

HOWEVER, like Peter Purves' brother, James, George Baker was probably more likely to be found in Melbourne than on the Southern Peninsula.
A Small BOAT for SALE, complete. Apply Mr. GEORGE BAKER. Lime Crafts.(P.1, Argus, 10-2-1860.)
LIME, Heads and Geelong ; Cement and Plaster; superior quality, and lowest rates. George Baker, Lime Wharf.
(P.8, Argus, 28-6-1865.)

(INCIDENTALLY, James Patterson was the head of the family that later settled near Pattersons Rd at Fingal, farmed near Wallaces Rd (known as Patterson's Lane) on Jamieson's Special Survey, and owned Pattersons Motors in Rosebud.)

The building of a substantial dwelling such as Clark's Cottage would imply a family and expected permanent residence in the area. Not one child of a George Baker was registered as having been born on the peninsula between 1841 and 1860.

This could be the lime burner's marriage, Devine being an early lime burner near the Heads, near whose kiln Owen Cain's daughter was found in 1844.*

No births were registered by this couple up to 1865. I could not find a marriage notice to confirm my suspicion.

* CHILD LOST.--On the afternoon of Tuesday, 20th inst., a little girl, daughter of Mr Owen Cain, residing near the heads, about three and a-half years of age was missing. A search was immediately made, but in vain. It was continued next morning, and four following days, and on Sunday(she)was found about half a mile distant from Mr Cameron's hut, near the sea beach. Two of Mr Devine's lime burners were attracted by a moan proceeding from something in the long grass, and after a search of two hours they discovered the child alive, eating grass. From the time the child was lost until Saturday evening it constantly blew a gale of wind, and rained incessantly. The child's feet and hands were much swollen, but it is recovering fast. The. greatest praise is due to the settlers of Point Nepean for their humane exertions in assisting the distressed parents to recover the child.(P.3, Geelong Advertiser, 9-9-1844.)

With little information appearing on trove that could be tied to the right George Baker, I tried a google search for George Baker Limeburner and discovered AN UNEXPECTED BONUS:
a history of limeburning, limecraft etc. with many photos such as Duffy's kiln at Portsea and details of the Walkerville area to which the Hughes family (and others) moved.

The Result went down in the Coles Channel off Swan Island in 1916, at which time the vessel was owned by the Melbourne Builders Lime and Cement Company*.
In terms of the interrelationship of burning, marketing and
shipping it is interesting to note that the Result was originally
owned by George Baker, a Melbourne lime merchant who for
some time also maintained an active involvement with lime
burning on the Mornington Peninsula. I I

*THE LIME DISPUTE.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—I have the honor to forward documents received by me from Mr George Baker, manager of Melbourne Builders Lime and Cement Company, (P.4, Geelong Advertiser, 16-10-1875.)

George was still involved in the company in 1898:

G.Baker was granted crown allotments 1,2,3 and 6 of section 7, Township of Rye in 1872. His purchases are shown on my paper map copied at the P.R.O.V. but not on the 1873 survey prepared by Michael Callanan, (one of the brothers after whom Callanans Rd at Red Hill was named:)

in ill-health for the last two months, and came to the above address about a fortnight ago. He was not seen by a medical man, and while drinking some wine he suddenly fell back and expired. Dr. T. Boyd was called in, but found that life was extinct. The doctor declined to give a certificate as to the cause of death, and the police were communicated with. A constable removed the body to the city morgue.(P.2, Bendigo Advertiser, 3-10-1898.)
No coroner's inquest has been found.

WAS A.B.BALCOMBE OF THE BRIARS NEAR MOUNT MARTHA (VIC., AUST.) RELATED TO THE FIRST OCCUPANT OF THAT RUN, CAPT. JAMES REID?

N.B. Links won't work unless they are copied into your search bar.

WERE CAPTAIN JAMES REID, EARLY SQUATTER NEAR MORNINGTON AND ALEXANDER BEATSON BALCOMBE WHO TOOK OVER HIS RUN, RELATED THROUGH MARRIAGE? WHAT BECAME OF CAPTAIN JAMES REID?
After I discovered that several of Balcombe's children were born in Victoria and that his wife's maiden name was Reid, I wondered what had happened to Captain James Reid. I wonder if James was related to Emma's father, Dr David Reid.

I'm sure that I've seen claims that A.B.Balcombe took over Captain Reid's run in 1843 but it seems certain that this happened in 1846. THE FIRST ARTICLE ABOVE SEEMS TO TAKE AN EACH-WAY BET. Where was he at Schnapper Point in 1843* if not on Reid's run? No land there had been alienated. Was he at Mentone (unlikely because he bought his land in the parish of Moorabbin circa 1853) or a guest of Captain James Reid on his run?
(* "Alexander bought livestock and took his wife to Port Phillip in 1842; they stayed for some time at Merri Creek and in 1843 settled at Schnapper Point, which Balcombe named. In 1846 he took over the run Chen Chen Gurruck, or Tichingorourke, changing the name to The Briars.")
In May 1843, A.B.Balcombe was still at the Merri Creek, little over a month earlier having had trouble with his neighbour.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/226925447
In March and November 1844, Alexander was a panel member in the Supreme Court so he was presumably still closer to Melbourne than today's Mentone.
In 1845, a Mr and Mrs Balcombe sailed to Sydney on the brig, Christina, arriving on July 20, maybe Alexander and Emma with a tiny bundle, the first of four daughters and two sons to be born in Victoria, to show to Dr. D.Reid and his wife. (An earlier child had been born in New South Wales.)
"The Sydney Morning Herald of September 14, 1842 noted that Mr and Mrs Balcombe and child departed for Port Phillip on the brig Christina. After their arrival in Melbourne Alexander and Emma stayed for some time at Merri Creek. "

This pastoral run was taken up in 1840 by the prominent gentleman colonist Captain James Reid, who called it
Checkingurk (or Tichingorook). Georgiana McCrae sketched the property in 1844. In 1846 it was transferred to
Alexander Balcombe, who renamed it The Briars after his family home on St Helena, where Napoleon had been
a guest during his exile.

SOMEONE (A GREAT SCIENTIST IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY) ONCE SAID THAT THE GREATEST THING A HUMAN BEING COULD DO WAS TO WONDER. At the start of this post I did some of this.
I wondered what had happened to Captain James Reid. I wonder if James was related to Emma's father, Dr David Reid.
Excerpt from the David Reid biography.
Their sister Agnes Cruickshank married Sir Francis Murphy and died in Melbourne on 27 January 1906 aged 88; and Emma Juana, born at sea in 1822, married A. B. Balcombe and died in Melbourne on 3 June 1907.
THE SQUATTER'S WIFE.
The writer of Captain James Reid's obituary regretted that more details of his military career were not available. I regret that more information about the captain's family was not provided in the obituary.
Who would guess that this was the death record of Captain Reid's widow?

What a coincidence that both of the military and naval namesakes were intimately associated with Sir John Franklin!
Were they related? Did the visit to Reid's run lead to the ice master's appointment?

WILFRID RUSSELL GRIMWADE AND JOHN GILBERT MANN, FRANKSTON, VIC., AUST.

I suppose there would be an Australian Dictionary of Biography article about Sir Russell Grimwade. I'd never even thought who had been responsible for bringing Cook's Cottage to Melbourne and this would probably be mentioned in such a biography, as well as his business interests, but there's no way known that all of the information contained in this treasure trove could be included! I discovered it in an effort to find out whether Harbury, John Gilbert Mann's residence at Mount Eliza, where John died in 1952, had been demolished or was still standing.

Sir Russell and John Gilbert Mann (who wrote the history of Mt Eliza in 1926) obviously knew each other well and shared a deep interest in Australia's history and flora. It was a Grimwade search on trove that enabled me to find the origin of the names of Harleston Rd,and Thornton Rd, Mt. Eliza (Melway 101 H9.) The collection includes architectural plans of houses that would be of great interest to heritage consultants, details of the first legal decision given in Melbourne, correspondence, a HUGE collection of photos (Coolart, Balnarring racecourse, the grandstand at the 1899 races at Portsea, Frankston golf links, etc.), maps that probably could not be accessed online, reward posters, and other information that would never have been published in newspapers.

WHO NAMED MT. MARTHA AND MT. ELIZA (VIC., AUST.) AND AFTER WHOM? THE MEN (see surnames list) WHO SURVEYED VICTORIA.

PORT PHILLIP SURVEYS

I was trying to find an article about a Flinders family, which had settled first on Jamieson's Special Survey when they came to the Mornington Peninsula, when I found this excellent article by a respected historian* which contradicts several claims that Mount Eliza was named after some relative of Captain William Hobson**. Just yesterday, I was examining articles about the lake that existed in the plain known by the Boon wurrung as Nerm which flooded, according to dreamtime stories and is now known as Port Phillip. In one of the many diagrams published in Dr.Holgate's report on the seabed a channel near the heads was called Symonds Channel and I wondered if the name was due to the pioneering family of "Westward Ho" at Flinders. It wasn't; it was named after one of the surveyors. Rarely do I read an historical article which does not have me thinking, "Hang on," but there are many indications in this article (such as Bulla being surveyed in 1847)that this article is extremely accurate. The nonsense about the Cottier family being responsible for Tootgarook being renamed as Rye has already been disproved but it is interesting that Rye township reserve was surveyed in 1841, two decades before the town was proclaimed. Surveyor Foot made one mistake that I have noticed, in his parish of Tullamarine map, in regard to the junction of the stream called Arundel Creek in some sources and the Maribyrnong River at Melway 14 J2.

* The foregoing article is based upon part of a paper read before the Historical Society by Mr. A. S. Kenyon
recently. (P.4, The Australasian, 18-7-1932.)

** Mount Eliza, Victoria
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
History[edit]
Mount Eliza was named in 1836 by Captain William Hobson after either Eliza Elliott, his wife, or Elizabeth Callaghan, the wife of John Batman.[2]
La Trobeana - Journal of the C J La Trobe Society Inc. (PDF), retrieved 14 January 2017

BACK TO MT. MARTHA AND MT ELIZA. (An extract from the article.)
On September 29, 1836, H.M.S. Rattlesnake, having on board Captain William Hobson and Lieutenants Thomas Symonds, Peter Frederick Shortland, and Henry, arrived in Port Phillip Bay. After landing Captain Lonsdale, his family, and retinue, a survey was made in October of the bay by Shortland and Symonds, of Corio by Henry. Shortland, whose Christian names were Peter Frederick, must not be confounded with Lieutenant John Shortland, the discoverer of Newcastle, or Willoughby Shortland, afterwards with Hobson in New Zealand. He named Mounts Martha and Eliza after Mrs. Lonsdale and Mrs. Batman respectively, probably at the instigation of, and certainly with the approval of, Lonsdale himself, who, a few weeks earlier, had described Batman and Thomson as the only persons of any respectability in the settlement. There was no Mrs. Thomson.

Hobson became the first Governor of New Zealand, Symonds blossomed forth as Sir Thomas Matthew Charles Symonds,
admiral of the fleet, Frederick Shortland became a vice-admiral, and Willoughby Shortland, Governor of New Zealand and of several West Indian islands.

JAMIESON'S SPECIAL SURVEY AND HODDLE'S REVENGE.
"Hoddle, with that foresight which distinguishes so much of his work, had always instructed his surveyors to keep 100 yards above high-water mark. In Jamieson's case Latrobe specially intervened, and directed, against Hoddle's protests, that in the survey in that and similar cases no reservation should be made. Later Hoddle got
a little back. He directed surveyors not to include in one lot any watercourse capable of forming a boundary."

TRIVIA.
Robert Hoddle and the original Sage were not only sons in law of Benjamin Baxter but also grantees of land around Baxter's pre-emptive right on the Carrup Carrup run, at the south east corner of the parish of Frankston.(Google FRANKSTON, COUNTY OF MORNINGTON to see the map.) In the Mornington Peninsula Souvenir in The Argus in 1954, two elderly Sage descendants, whose most prized possession was Uncle Robert's measuring chain, are pictured.

Ray Holmes, descendant of a pioneering family at Red Hill near Dromana became Victoria's Surveyor-General.
RAY HOLMES

Many streets in Dromana Township, that part of Dromana west of McCulloch St, were named after surveyors. A street in Franklinford Township was also named after CHARLES WHYBROW LIGAR

D'ARCY AND DE LITTLE HAVE HAD TO BE WRITTEN AS DARCY AND DELITTLE ON THE SURNAMES LIST.

THE UNTOLD EARLY HISTORY OF JAMIESON'S SPECIAL SURVEY BETWEEN MT, MARTHA, TUBBARUBBA AND DROMANA, VIC., AUST.

Having become aware that James Hearn may not have been the last lessee of the Mount Martha Run and that William Biggam was the lessee of the run in 1850, and that William Biggam was insolvent by 1859 and may have forfeited the run, thus leaving the pre-emptive right, Dalkeith open to purchase at auction by Hearn, I was doing a "Mount Martha" search on trove (1840's) when I saw what was a vague reference to Jamieson selling his special survey to a man in Sydney which was so vague that it seemed little more than a rumour but was confirmed moments later.

The Mount Martha Run was north of, and the Survey south of, a line indicated by Ellerina/Bruce/Foxeys Roads from the bay to Bulldog Creek Rd.

NOT A RUMOUR AFTER ALL!

Martha, to a gentleman in Sydney for

* COUNTY OF MORNINGTON.

In view of the above, this passage from page 30 of A DREAMTIME OF DROMANA seems interesting.

The next day (February 10,1844)Captain Reid and Mr McCrae inspected that part of Jamieson's Survey which allows a small run to be taken up. Georgiana recorded that on February 15th, "Captain and Mrs Reid, Mr (Hugh*)Jamieson, Mr McCrae and myself went on horseback to inspect the Survey."

*Colin McLear had quite logically assumed that the Mr Jamieson mentioned was the grantee of the survey, but he might have been the Mr Jamieson who wrote the letter to Governor Latrobe, quoted on page 25 of Colin's book, stating:"I arrived in Port Phillip towards the end of the year 1838 and about six weeks later etc."; this was ROBERT Jamieson of the Cape Schanck Run.

However this Mr Jamieson may have had cattle on the Survey as shown by this passage on page 31 Colin's book. Of course the cattle could have strayed all the way from Cape Schanck. If it was Hugh Jamieson, he might have been leasing the Survey from JOHN TERRY Hughes who, with John Hosking, had bought huge areas of land in the parish of WILL WILL ROOK,(in the present suburbs of Broadmeadows, Glenroy and Attwood) snapped up for a song by Donald Kennedy in the mid 1840's. (P.15, 22, BROADMEADOWS A FORGOTTEN HISTORY, Andrew Lemon.) Hughes probably never saw any of the land that he had bought in Sydney. His speculation was undone by the 1843 depression.

Of a later time on the visit of February 15 1844, Georgiana wrote:
Returning over the hill, Mr Jamieson was able to identify some of his own bullocks among strangers, quietly at graze, whereupon, he and Captain Reid, with much shouting and cracking of whips, proceeded to cut them out from the mob.

It is likely that John Terry Hughes' mortgagees in 1844 were the same bank that leased the survey in two parts to (a)Charles Graves and William Brownlee, the southern 4000+ and (b)the Connells, the northern 1000+ acres, in 1851. Leonard Wilding would have obtained the following information from Charles Graves.

The survey was occupied for some time by Jamieson Bros, and later on passed into the hands of the Bank of Australasia. In the middle of January, 1851*, Mr Graves, now of Woodlands, Flinders, entered into a tenancy of 4120 acres of the area. The other portion, including the house, was rented by Connell Bros. When Mr Graves and his partner, Mr Brown Lee (who at the start, went in extensively for wheat growing), had occupied the place for about five years, it was purchased by Mr Clark*, the grandfather of Sir Rupert Clark*, the present owner. Five years after the sale Mr Clark**, Mr Griffiths, and Mr Gibson, whose families are still in possession, became the tenants of the property. The rental paid by Messrs Graves and Brown Lee in the early days was 10s per acre.
HISTORY OF THE Mornington Peninsula. EARLY SETTLEMENT.
Mornington Standard (Vic. : 1889 - 1908) Saturday 2 September 1905 p 6 Article

* Clarke **An owner can't be a tenant on his own property. Clarke was assessed on portions of the estate not being occupied in any given year.

On page 33 of A DREAMTIME OF DROMANA, Colin McLear quotes from the Victorian Historical Magazine, Volume XIII, 1928-9: "Hugh Jamieson did not reside for any length of time on the Survey, and from about the middle forties until 1851, it was leased to Henry Dunn*, after whom Dunn's Creek is named. Rolf Boldrewood recorded that by 1842, Hugh Jamieson was at Tallarook on the Golburn with his brothers, Archibald and Thos. In 1851, Allison and Knight, who had a flour mill at Dight's Falls on the Yarra, became agents for the land, and leased it to Charles Graves and William Brownlee who grew extensive areas of wheat on it. Later it was sublet into small areas to several tenants, and ultimately, a great deal of it passed into the hands of the Clarke family."

*Henry Dunn was on the Survey by March 1845 when he killed a snake. He sometimes visited the Arthurs Seat homestead. (P. 33, A DREAMTIME OF DROMANA.) HOWEVER, HE WAS NOT ON HIS OWN! When I first read Edmond Dunn's biography in 1988, I didn't have a clue where Jamiesons Special Survey might be.

PAGE 424, VICTORIA AND ITS METROPOLIS:PAST AND PRESENT (1888), ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND. (Paraphrased.)
DUNN, Edmond, Broadmeadows, is a native of Devonshire, who arrived on the WESTMINSTER in 1841 after a voyage of 100 days. He resided in the metropolis for a few years working for others and doing a little farming on his own account, growing oats on a small patch of land on which Coburg now stands. After leasing some land on JAMIESON'S SPECIAL SURVEY for FIVE YEARS,he purchased Viewpoint Farm at Broadmeadows in 1849 and commenced growing wheat.

ALL of the Survey passed into the hands of William John Turner (Big) Clarke as described in great detail by C.N.Hollinshed in LIME LAND LEISURE. Clarke sold the northern 1000+ acres to John Vans Agnew Bruce a partner in Cornish and Bruce which later built the Murray River and Mount Alexander Railway (which by sheer coincidence had a crazy detour from Diggers Rest through Sunbury (at the back of the future "Rupertswood" which had its own private station!)to Clarkefield before returning to the logical course through New Gisborne. The northern 1000+ acres were sold AT A PROFIT to Bruce, and were certainly not a wedding present to a member of the Prime Minister's family.

The McLears arrived in 1851 which makes me suspect that the subletting of part of the southern 4000+ acres may have commenced almost straight away, instigated by William Brownlee who was at the Plenty at the same time as John McLear was murdered on Boxing Day, 1849 and may have suggested to John's widow, who became a partner with Charles Graves in a hawking business, that a small farm (The Willow)could be available for her. The Connells continued to lease parts of the Bruce Estate well after James Connell* (who played in the Peninsula's first football match, organised by the Barker Brothers) received his grants near the north end of Balnarring Rd, near the Tuerong Station.
* JAMES CONNELL

The 1851 lease must have been only for two years as Allison and Knight were advertising the northern 1000+ acres again in 1853. That portion had obviously not been sublet yet.

TO LET. 1024 acres of Land, a portion of Jamieson's Special Survey, having a frontage of 32 chains to the Bay of Port Phillip; Apply to Allison and Knight. 18845 (P.3, Argus, 1-3-1853.)

WHO IS THE OLDEST RESIDENT IN THE PENINSULA.
TO THE EDITOR.
SIR, - Re "New Chum's" inquiry in your last issue as to the oldest resident of the Peninsula, I think I am one of the few that are left. I left the Isle of Man in August, 1849, and arrived in Melbourne December the same year. After spending 12 months near Melbourne, I came to Dromana (then called Jamieson's Survey) on January
15th, 1851. I rented 4000 acres of land from the Bank of Australia for nine years, and in 1860 bought the
property I am now living on. You will therefore see that I am one of the old pioneers.

SARAH WAS ANOTHER WIDOW WHO SETTLED ON THE SURVEY.
SARAH WILSON.
Like Mary Ann McLear, Sarah arrived on the Survey as a widow.
Extract from my journal THE MYSTERIOUS SARAH WILSON.
Sarah Spence was born in County Tyrone,Ireland and at the age of 21, she married Oliver Wilson, a staunch Presbyterian and a shoemaker. Oliver, son of George and Martha, was born on County Donegal in 1791.His mother died in 1831 aged 80 and probably because he no longer had the responsibility of her care,he married in 1832 at the age of 40. Three children were to share the voyage to Australia: George b.1833,Jane b.1834 and Matilda b.1837.

Since 1835, there had been a bounty of 38 pounds paid for married couples under the age of 40 who went to the colony so Oliver, now 49, declared that he was 38 and that Sarah (actually 29) was 34. Having crossed the Irish Sea,they sailed from Liverpool on the Argyle, leaving on 7-11-1840 and landing at William's Town on 12-4-1841, glad to step ashore after the confined space in steerage.

Oliver continued his trade as a shoemaker and the family had a house in Flinders Lane where their fourth child,Robert, was born on 11-7-1843. Melbourne had been declared a Town in 1842 and by the birth was probably in the grip of a severe depression, but Oliver persevered and by 1847 was making a good living from his craft, with help from 14 year-old George. Oliver died on 12-1-1851 and soon rents became astronomical because of the gold rush, so 18 year-old George, now the head of the family suggested a move to cheaper housing on Jamieson's Special Survey near Arthur's Seat (the present Safety Beach, east to Bulldog Creek Rd.) This makes it likely that Sarah's family arrived on the Survey in 1851 or soon after, rather than 1855 as stated by Colin McLear and the pioneer pathway plaque. How could Jane and Matilda have married fellow Survey residents on 18-4-1855 if they had not spent some time getting to know each other?

From my journal GEORGE YOUNG THE MYSTERIOUS PIONEER OF DROMANA.

George's father, also George, was born in Birmingham and, convicted of stealing brushes at the age of 16 was transported to Van Dieman's Land in 1820. Having served his time, he married Charlotte, who had been convicted of highway robbery, in 1826 and George Junior was born in 1828. Charlotte was murdered by being pushed into a fire when the boy was about 7 and his father later married Elizabeth Jones (who had been transported for stealing a purse.)George's father and stepmother were recorded as passengers to the Port Phillip District (Victoria) in 1848. Petronella Wilson speculated that George (junior)worked his passage across and mentioned no siblings (which surely there were unless there was a reproduction problem.)

George Young junior married Jane Wilson at Sarah Wilson's house on the Survey on 18-4-1855. Jane had been born in 1834 to Oliver and Sarah Wilson and had been about 7 when the family arrived on 12-1-1841. George was now 25 and his occupation was given as carpenter. On the same day, possibly simultaneously, Jane's sister, Matilda, married William Johnson. The two couples later moved to Melway 255 H-J 1 with George Wilson, brother of the brides.George and Jane had five children:Jane Ann, George, Mary Jane, John and Sarah.

Jane died at 29 shortly after Sarah's birth on 12-8-1863 and the baby was taken in by Matilda and William. On 2-1-1866,George married Janet White, an orphaned 18 year old from Mt Martha. George Wilson and his fiancee, Mary Jane Connell were witnesses; Mary Jane's father, Anthony, had been granted a huge area of land across three chain road from the grants of Andrew White, who may have been Janet's father.

Jamieson did not spend much time on his survey but somebody who did live there was Mrs Newby. On 15-2-1844, Captain Reid and his wife, (Hugh?) Jamieson and Georgiana McCrae and hubby, Andrew, visited the Survey, meeting Mrs Newby and her two daughters. Mrs Newby complained of loneliness during Captain Newby's absences at sea. On 27-7-1845,Andrew told Georgiana about the three Newby children drowning. (P. 30 A DREAMTIME OF DROMANA.) Was this true? Yes!

SHIPWRECKS. LOSS OF THE MARY. By the steamer Shamrock, which arrived here on Sunday, the distressing intelligence has been received of the total wreck of the barque Mary, Captain Newby, from this port to London in Bass's Straits; and we are sorry to add that no less than seventeen of her passengers have perished. The Mary left Sydney for London on the 19th of May, having on board 69 souls, including the crew, and a very valuable cargo. It was intended by the owners that she should proceed by the usual course round Cape Horn, and the Mary stood away to the southward for that purpose, but when she was off Cape Howe, the wind being at east south-east, with every appearance of a continuance from the same quarter, Captain Newby determined to attempt the westerly passage, notwithstanding the unpromising time of the year, and accordingly stood into Bass's Straits for that purpose. On the morning of the 24th May, the Mary was off Wilson's Promontory, when the wind suddenly died away, and at 10 A. M. a strong breeze sprung up from the northwest, and gradually increased to a gale with heavy rain. Thinking he had now got into a westerly wind, the captain determined to give up the westerly passage, and accordingly bore up and ran to the southward of Sir Roger Curtis' and Kent's Groups. At 6 P. M. he estimated the ship's position to be five miles south of the body of Kent's Group, fixed her course at east by north, and having been up the two previous nights, the captain went to bed, there being then a breeze from the north- west, which was sending the ship seven knots per hour. The chief mate had the watch from 8 to 12; about 11 he called the captain, saying he thought " land was handy ;" but upon the captain going upon deck, he could not see any land, and found that it was almost a calm. Broken water, however, was soon discovered off the lee beam, and a strong current was rapidly driving the ship towards it. There was no wind to make the ship answer her helm, she refused stays and drove broadside onto the rock. She first touched on the starboard bilge, then under the fore chains, and immediately parted abaft the foremast, the bows slipping off the rock into deep water; she then struck abaft, unshipped her rudder, and the topsides floated off the bottom, over the reef into smooth water. In seven minutes from the time she struck, the ship was in pieces. The most melancholy part remains to be told. Seventeen women and children were drowned and what is most extraordinary is, that not a mast was lost. Those drowned were-three of Captain Newby's daughters; six children of Mrs. Evans; Augusta and Catherine, daughters of Captain Collins, of Illawarra ; Mrs Heather, and two children, Mrs. Grey, Mrs. Turnbull, and Sarah Foulkes, servant to Mrs. Collins. How the remainder were saved we cannot understand. Captain Newby only remarks," we were saved in the long boat in the most wonderful manner." The above parties were lost in consequence of the upsetting of the whale boat, into which they had been lowered, but it has not been ascertained how this accident occurred. The reef upon which the Mary was lost lies to the north east of a rock described in the Australian Directory as Wright's rock, about three and a half miles, and is known to the sealers who visit Furneaux's Island as the north east or deep reef. etc.

1897 PHOTOS OF "NYORA", SIR J. MADDEN'S "YAMALA" AND JAMES GRICE'S "MOONDAH" BETWEEN FRANKSTON AND MORNINGTON, VIC., AUST.

This article was found in an attempt to discover the ownership of Nyora between John Thomas Smith's death in 1879 and Henry Slaney's ownership of the property from about 1905 to 1922. At least two articles (including this one) insinuate that James Liddle Purves was this owner, while heritage citations/ studies claim that Purves was the owner of Nyora or a frequent guest at either Nyora or the Ranelagh guest house- can't remember which!)

Hopefully the Ranelagh Club has a photo of the Nyora homestead on display, but the history boards near the headless J.T.Smith memorial on J.T.Smith Reserve do not include a photo or mention when or if the homestead was demolished. Some red bricks from the homestead are inserted into the memorial.

From my journal about the origins of Mt Eliza street/place names within the Mornington Peninsula Shire and the parish of Moorooduc.

The truth of the matter is that J.L.Purves had only leased Nyora.
PROPERTY SALE.-The well-known property, "Nyora," containing 286 acres, situated on the Mornington road, at the junction of the Frankston and Hastings and Mornington shires, formerly leased by Mr J. L. Purves, has changed hands. The purchaser is Mr Henry Slaney, of the Haymarket, Melbourne. (P.2, Mornington Standard, 15-10-1904.)

Henry Slaney's executors must have sold Nyora to John Thompson.
Nyora Estate, Mount Eliza, has been sold. It is proposed to put down bowling greens, tennis courts and golf, links* on the estate. (P.15, The Age, 21-8-1923.)
* The golf links were built on the site of the Peninsula School.

RE SIR JOHN MADDEN.
It was probably from John Gilbert Mann's 1926 history of Mt Eliza that I found that Sir John Madden had married the daughter of Frank Stephen.

RE THE GRICE FAMILY'S BUSINESS INTERESTS. (From my T.J.Sumner journal.)
SUMNER.
The Victorian Government website on members of Parliament gives the following details about Theodotus John Sumner. He was born at Liskeard, Cornwall in 1920 and died on 20-4-1884 at Brunswick. His father was the Rev, John Sumner, a Methodist minister.
T.J.Sumner married Sarah Jones Peers. He was a merchant and his religion was listed as Methodist. Sumner emigrated to Van Diemans Land in 1841 and arrived in Melbourne in April 1842. He engaged in pastoral and agricultural pursuits and became a partner of Richard Grice in 1855 when Grice's former partner had died. Grice, Sumner and Co. were wholesale merchants who gave advances on pastoral properties. Theodotus was an early president of the National Agricultural Society and established a model farm on his Schnapper Point Estate. He became a member of the Board of Education in 1862 and was a member of the Legislative Council from May 1873 until February 1883.
Engaged in extensive charity work, T.J. endowed the Sumner ward at Melbourne?s Children?s Hospital. His widow administered his estate, a large part of which was in trust for charity, especially the Old Colonists' Home and the Melbourne Hospital.

A quick search on google revealed the following. Grice and Sumner had two ships built at Newcasle-on-Tyne in 1863: the Penola and S.S.Blackbird. The former was built especially for the Adelaide-Melbourne run but collided with, and sank, the City of Launceston in Port Phillip Bay on 19-11-1865. The damaged Penola was briefly replaced on the Adelaide run by the Blackbird which then worked the Brisbane mail run until 1873, undercutting passenger fares charged by the established lines. The Penola was sold to J.J.Grice and Partners and S.S.Blackbird was sold to Captain A.Campbell and Partners in 1876. (Flotilla-Australia website.)

An advertisement of Allotment 1 Moorooduc of 285.2.34 (the Ranelagh Estate at Mt Eliza) on which is erected Nyora (built by J.T.Smith and later Ranelagh Guest House) mentions that Mrs Sumner owned the adjoining Earimil. (Argus 7-11-1903.)

(P.3, Argus,5-2-1879.)

Having found no sale advertisements for Nyora in the 1880's (or "Portion 1 Moorooduc"), I dropped the inverted commas in the latter search and discovered that the Ranelagh Estate might never have happened! It was to be divided into blocks of between 5 and 20 acres. Portion 19 Moorooduc was called the Tower Paddock. I hadn't noticed that J.T.Smith senior was a grantee in the parish of Lyndhurst.
LYNDHURST AND MOOROODUC

Google LYNDHURST, COUNTY OF MORNINGTON to see John Thomas Smith's Lyndhurst grants. The southern boundary with the parish of Frankston was Seaford/Ballarto Rd (except on Long Island where Frankston went north to include today's Riviera Hotel site) and if you follow the road east you will find a fork (Melway 133 B9)that is now Cranbourne-Frankston Rd, Pearcedale Rd and the east boundary of Settlers Run Golf Course. East of the fork is c/a 13, granted to Hugh Glass, Smith's near neighbour at Flemington. Smith's c/a 14 was bounded by the proposed Ballarto Rd, Westernport Highway and (unsurprisingly!) HALL* RD., with c/a 15 to the north, extending north to a western extension of Duff St to the highway and east to the west end of Duff St. Part of the Ranfurlie Golf Course was on c/a 14.
(*Hall was leasing these grants.)

CHANGES OF PLANS FOR "NYORA".
The 1882 plans for blocks of between 5 and 20 acres went down like a lead balloon so the next tactic was selling the property as a whole, with plan B of three blocks all fronting the bay, in 1883.
ONE LOT OR THREE IN 1883, near end of last column.

By 1886, the plan had been changed to two blocks, one of 145 acres fronting the bay and the other, of 135 fronting the Schnapper Point road.

HAS THE JOHN THOMAS SMITH MONUMENT AT MT.ELIZA, VIC., AUST. BEEN DECAPITATED?

While holidaying at Rosebud, I spent much time in the Mechanics' Institute Library on cooler days and was staggered to see a claim that John Thomas Smith was a pioneer of Mount Eliza. Having become a local historian in 1988, with my focus being Tullamarine and miles around, I thought I knew everything about him but Mt Eliza had never been mentioned in histories of that area. I have no doubt that this claim had been in Mr.JOHN GILBERT Mann's 1926 history of Mt Eliza.

On my first visit to Mt Eliza over a decade ago, I saw a monument in what proved to be J.T.Smith Reserve and I am sure that there was a (head and Shoulders) bust of J.T.Smith atop it. This is missing on the 2015 photograph of the monument and just over a week ago my suspicion that a bust had been there was confirmed when I saw white material, probably some sort of adhesive, where the bust had been. The memorial had been erected by the Ranelagh Association in 1973.

With the internet now available, John G.Mann's claim can now been confirmed. However, very little has been revealed in his biography about his landholdings in the two areas as well as his residence in Queen St., Melbourne, to which I was alerted some years ago by Muzza of McCrae's photo and which I will use as a starting point.

The following links will need to be pasted into your search bars so that you can view this journal and the maps etc simultaneously.
