Why am I having so much trouble researching the ancestry of my maternal grandfather whose name was Napoleon Metayer?

He was born in Quebec and died in Fall River, Ma. His wife was Clara Metayer Bosse and his daughter was my mother, Annette Bosse Parent.

I do have dates of birth, marriage and death as well as places my Metayer ancestors were born, married and died but I can go back only a few generations whereas with my Parent ancestors I was able to go back to 1502 and almost as far with my Bosse ancestors. I found all these ancestors for free without having to pay a genealogy company that charges you for this information.

parent surname ancestors

I have been searching for years for my ancestors on the Parent side of the family. I have read that there were originally 3 families of Parent who came to Quebec from France I believe at the request of the king. Starting at the top with who I believed was my oldest ancestor, Andre Parent and his son Pierre, I can't connect the genealogy to the bottom of my family tree starting with me (maiden name Parent). My father was Bertrand Parent (1922-1984), his father was Napoleon Parent (1890-1972), his father was George Parent (1857-1931). The problem is that I am having trouble with the next name after that. I found a Charles Parent (1833-1906) that I believed was George's father but I can't get anywhere after that. So either Charles is not the next grandfather in line or this name is keeping me from progressing any further. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
