Descendants of Andrew WEBSTER (1790) and Jane CROOM (1792-1871) of Montrose, Scotland

All of the children of Andrew WEBSTER and Jane CROOM left Scotland for New Zealand or Australia. The children were:

William WEBSTER (1816-1904)to New Zealand m Annabella GILLIES
John WEBSTER (1818-1912)to Australia then New Zealand m Emily RUSSELL
George WEBSTER (1820-1871) to New Zealand
Anne WEBSTER (1822-1906)to New Zealand m John LECK
Alexander Speid WEBSTER (1824-1905) to Australia m Mary THOMPSON
James WEBSTER (1830-died young)
Isobella WEBSTER (1833-1899) to New Zealand

Both William WEBSTER AND John WEBSTER settled in the Hokianga, Northland, New Zealand and married woman of Maori ancestry. William's wife Hanapara (Annabella) GILLIES was the daughter of Colin GILLIES who arrived in the Hokianga in 1825 and his wife Hihe.

Jane (CROOM) WEBSTER left Scotland and moved to New Zealand with her daughters Anne and Isobella around 1854/5.

I am wanting to update the family trees of those in New Zealand and Australia who are descended from William WEBSTER and his wife Hanapara (Annabella) GILLES as this is my husbands direct line but also keen to update all the other lines as well. I have reasonable details of the next three generations through to approximately 1980.

Working backwards on the Jane CROOM side I am looking for any interesting information about her parents:

William CROOM (1770-1826) Merchant of Dundee who married Anne SPEID (1772-1850) in 1792.

Jane CROOM's siblings were:

Anne CROOM (1793-1835)
Margaret CROOM (1785-1871) m Alexander FERGUSSON
Isobella CROOM (1797-1879)
John CROOM (1799-1883) m Miss MUNSY
Agnes CROOM (1801-1833)
Female CROOM (1803)
Female CROOM (1805)
William CROOM (1807-1808)
Rosalinda CROOM (1808-1890) m Mr MUNSY
Mary CROOM (1810-1890)
Male CROOM (1812)
Male CROOM (1814)

I look forward to any further information about any of this family.

Then on the Anne SPEID side about her parents:

James SPEID (1721-1791) who married Margaret ROBERTSON (1734-?)

Then on the Margaret ROBERTSON side about her parents:

Alexander ROBERTSON (1695-1775) Provost of Dundee who married Anne SCRYMGEOUR (1702-1775) in 1725.

I have no information about Andrew WEBSTER (1790) except that he was a farmer and merchant in Montrose, Scotland. I look forward to finding out more about him and any one of the families mentioned above.

Rev James Martin returned to Australia from New Zealand after 1883

As a descendant of the Rev James MARTIN (born in 1821 in Magheraknock, County Down, Ireland) and his wife Elizabeth (nee MAITLAND) (born in 1834 in Ballycreen, County Down,Ireland), I am interested to find out what happened to them after they left New Zealand to return to Australia some time after 1883 along with eight of their ten children. The children were: Robert, Elizabeth, Matilda, Mary, John, Frank and Jane.

They married in Ballynahinch, County Down, Ireland on 30 October 1850 and lived for a short time in Ballynahinch where their first child was born, Charles Alexander MARTIN, in 1853. They left for Australia in 1854 and went first to Tasmania. In 1868 they arrived in Dunedin, New Zealand with seven children, started the Opotiki School in the Bay of Plenty along with looking after the religious interests of the community. James's last teaching appointment in New Zealand was to the Grafton High School as Headmaster in 1873 where he remained for ten years.

Their eldest son Charles Alexander MARTIN (1853 - 1911) and another son James MARTIN (1858 - 1932) remained in New Zealand, married and raised their families. I am descended from James MARTIN who farmed in Purua, in the Whangarei District of Northland, New Zealand. Charles Alexander MARTIN was mostly in the publican business from Opotiki and Te Puke through to Kaeo in the north followed by running a grocery in Mt Eden, Auckland until his retirement due to ill-health.

What happened to James and Elizabeth MARTIN and their other eight children back in Australia from 1883 onwards?
