The grave stone of Catherine Ebbott and my search for husband Gregory Ebbott

Recently I visited the Tresmeer cemetery, Cornwall in search of graves and came across the grave of Catherine Ebbott.
The headstone read
?In Loving Memory of
Catherine Ebbott
of this Parish
who died 24th May 1902
Aged 85 years. Thy will be done?

I was very excited when we located the grave, however I had to wait until I got home (to Australia) before I could figure out who Catherine Ebbott was ? she was the wife of my third great granduncle! It was the only grave in this parish church that I could find that had any connect to my family, there may have been others but after a while it becomes overwhelming trying to remember all the possible connections.

The mystery of Catherine Ebbott nee Mathew
Further Research revealed that Catherine was born in 1817 as Catherine Mathew and christened in 6 Apr 1817 in Tressmeer and lived there until she married Gregory Ebbot. Soon after the couple married they went to the USA. The following year after marriage they had their first child Caroline Ebbott, both mother and child returned possibly sometime in 1849 to England. Caroline may have been pregnant with her second child, Elizabeth Ann Ebbott (although I am unable to verify this) when she returned. It would appear that Gregory never returned to England.

In the 1851 Census Catherine is living with her parents and eldest daughter, Carolene who was 5 years old. Carolene was listed in the census as being born in America. Although Catherine is listed as married her husband is not present. Between 1861 and 1881 Cartherine is always listed as married but there is never a husband mentioned.

On 01/19/1854 there is a record of divorce proceedings for a Gregory Ebbot and Catherine Ebbot in Jefferson County, Wisconsin it was Gregory Ebbot, the plaintiff, who filed for divorce. The outcome of this application has not yet been researched yet, I am still waiting for a reply from the Dodge/Jefferson Counties Genealogical Society, Watertown, WI

In 1861 Census Catherine appears to be living by herself in the house next to her parents.
In 1871 Census Catherine is still listed as married but is living by herself and listed as an annuitant
In 1881 Census - Catherine is living by herself next to the Bluett family still married but still no husband list and she is listed as retired.
In 1891 Census Catherine is 73 Living On Her Own Means
In 1901 Census Visiting John & Elizabeth Fryan and listed as single.
Unfortunatley I have not been able to locate Gregory her husband until 1870 when there are two posibile candidates one living with the Ottawa, Waukesha, Wisconsin, United States working as a farm labourer and living with the Bluett family. There is also a second Gregory Ebbott living in Sullivan, Jefferson, Wisconsin, United States who has become a citizen of the US and farms a large property and has children with a woman Mary who is 30 years his junior.
Then the question is who/where is Catherine?s husband, I am presuming he was still alive as she is never listed as a widow? Does anyone recongnise this family or have any suggestions on how to approach the problem? Then question is who/where is Catherine?s husband, I am presuming he was still alive as she is never listed as a widow? Developing a working theory to reconcile the Mystery of the two Mary Ebbotts

Mary Ferrett is my fourth great-grandmother she married Philip Upton Ebbott in 1804, in Trenglos, Cornwall thus becoming Mary Ebbott.
As explained in a previous post entitled Two Mary Ebbotts help need to disentangle them I have been trying to distinguish which of the two Mary Ebbotts that appeared in the 1841 was my ancestor.

To recap- In the 1841 Census in Cornwall, there are two Mary Ebbott?s born about 1786 in the county of Cornwall. When searching on the web, I noticed that these two Mary?s are often interchangeable and both often assigned to my ancestor Mary Ebbott (nee Ferrett).
This is further complicated by both of these Mary?s staying with families who are directly related to my ancestors.
In household 1 Philip Ebbott is the eldest male in the household. Mary in this household would be Philip?s wife, and therefore my ancestor. This is corroborated by the 1851 census, where both are listed as husband and wife.

In household 2 John Bone is the eldest male of the household. John is the father-in-law of Sarah Ebbott, Mary Ebbott (nee Ferrett)?s daughter. It is possible that Mary could have been visiting Sarah?s in-laws on the night of the census. John Bone?s wife Grace died two days before the census and this could have been the reason for the visit. I can find no further record of this second Mary Ebbott in the 1851 census or death between 1841 and 1851.

Working Theory
Both Mary Ebbott?s in the 1841 census are the same person who was registered in two places. She may have been staying the night of the census with relatives (John Bone), and was included on the household census. And at the same time Mary?s husband, Philip Ebbott, not following instructions to the letter, may have included her in the household as this is where she lived.
If the head of household was literate then they would fill out the census for the family. This could mean that husband, Philip Ebbott filled the census out as soon as he got it and/or it sat around waiting to be picked up, in the meantime his wife may have gone visiting to John Bone's either for the day or overnight and as a consequence was recorded as being at the Bone's residence as well. The residences being only 3 miles apart this would be have been quite plausible.

I would be interested in hearing other researchers thoughts on my conclusion either in agreement or disagreement, I would be particularly interested in anyone who can claim or recognise the Mary Ebbott of household 2 thus disproving my theory of a double up.

The background to my conclusion
The first step was to trace and confirm the identity of Mary in household 1, beyond the 1841 census. In the 1851 she is confirmed as the wife of Philip. Mary?s husband Philip passes away a two months after the 1851 census, and soon after in 1854 Mary with her youngest son William migrate from Tresmere to Palumyra, Wisconsin, USA via Quebec.
The second step then was to establish or eliminate the Mary in household 2. I looked for a death of a Mary Ebbott between 1841 and 1852 to see if she had died between the censuses. I found only one Mary Ebbott dying during this period. The death registration was for a Mary Jane EBBOTT. This Mary Jane Ebbott was the granddaughter of Mary Ebbott (nee Ferrett) and only 3 years of age. The result being the Mary Ebbott in household 2 remains a mystery.

According to her death certificate she was 84 years old at the time of her death, she had been born in Cornwall England, and her father?s name was John Bone a Farmer. Sarah had come to Victoria, Australia 46 years before.

Based on her death certificate her estimated birthdate was around 1813.
In 1815 there were three children that were baptized on the 30 July 1815.

30-Jul 1815 Botus Fleming Sally BONE
30-Jul 1815 Botus Fleming Harriet BONE
[Note ? Sally is a common name that is often interchangeable with Sarah]

It appears that Sarah, Jane & Harriet were all baptized on the same day.

Sarah married John Ebbott on the 2 Jul 1839 in the Parish church of Egloskerry, in Cornwall, England.

Two years later in 1841 John Ebbott and Sarah were living in Badharick, Egloskerry, Cornwall, England, on a farm with their new born son.

EBBOTT family in both North Tregeare, Tresmeer & Westcot,Tremaine both parishes of Cornwall

According to the British National Archives John Ebbott owned land in North Tregeare, Tresmeer, the parish in which he was born. He did not sell the land before he died in 1825, his widowed wife Wilmott is recorded as selling the “North Tregeare” property in 1827 along with her grandson Philip, John Ebbott's only male heir.

We also know from John Ebbott's tombstone, in the Tremaine Churchyard, that he must have lived in Westcott for some considerable time as he was described as “John Ebbott of Westcott in this Parish”

Originally I thought that the two properties of Westcott and North Tregeare were the same, however they are not one and the same, The two properties are about 2 miles away from each other1 “North Tregeare” is in Tresmeer and Westcot is in Tremaine, Cornwall.

John Ebbott and Wilmot Baker married on 26 Jun 1775, in Tremaine, Cornwall2

John & Wilmot had only two children:-
1.Philip Upton Ebbott christened 7 Feb 1776, Tresmeer, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom
2.Elizabeth Ebbott christened 30 Jan 1778, Tresmeer, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.
A second christening was also recorded for Elizabeth Ebbott on the same day in Egloskerry (C022532) The two churches are less than three miles apart so the parents could have had Elizabeth baptised twice, however it's more likely that the same clergyman covered the two parishes [common even then] and then when recording the days proceedings inadvertantly had the single event written in both registers.

Eighteen years later John Baker dies in 1793 leaving his one of his several estates to his daughter Wilmot Ebbott (wife of John Ebbott).

The question now is how do I go about finding more about the Ebbott/Baker connection discovered via John Bakers Will with the Westcott estate.
Is anyone else researching these families or properties?

My EBBOTT BAKER connection in Tremaine, CORNWALL

In my quest ot verify the connection between several generations of my ancestoral (Baker/Ebbott) family I have hit a brick wall, although I have a transcript of a will from a book that clearly establishs the connection I have been unable to find the original copy to verify this information.

I have been able to locate my ancestors tombstone in the Tremaine Church yard in Cornwall and thanks to a distant travelling relative I also have a photo.

The tombstone reads :- ?Sacred / To the Memory of / John Ebbott of Westcott in this Parish / who finished his course May 29 1825 aged 73 years ./ ALSO in memory of WILMET his wife / Who departed this life on the 2? day of January 1845 / Aged 91 years?

Further research on the IGI reveals that John Ebbot married Wilmot Baker on 26 Jun 1775 in the same church in which they were eventually burried.. (I have not yet viewed the original church record of the marriage)

According to the book "Our Cornish Heritage Genealogies of Reed, Rowe, Ebbott and related families Immigrants to Jefferson County, Wisconsin" by S.D.Reed, when Wilmet?s father, John Baker, died she inherited the family farm ?Westcott?. The notion that the John Ebbott owned or at least lived on ?Westcott? is reinforced by its mention on the his gravestone.

The inheritance is further confirmed by the transcription of John Baker?s will, which according to S.D.Reed was proved on 23 October 1793 (page XI-22).

The will helps to verify three generations of the Baker-Ebbot lineage, by the use of such phrases as follows:-
Generation One
?I, John Baker?
?my wife Margery Baker?
Generation Two
?son-in-law, John Ebbott?
?daughter Wilmot Ebbott? (obviusly wife of John Ebbott)
Generation Three
?grandson Phillip Ebbott?
?Elizabeth Ebbott?

The picure that I have been able to build of John BAKER?s descendants as outlined by his will (with the additional information from his gravestone. and other sources) is as follows.

First Generation
1. John BAKER was born circa 1730, died in Jul 1793 in Tremaine, Cornwall, at age 63, and was buried on 29 Jul 1793 in Tremaine Churchyard, Tremaine, Cornwall. John married Margery. Margery was born in 1731 and she was buried on 16 Aug 1815.
Children from this marriage were:

i. Wilmot BAKER was born in Feb 1752 in Tresmeer, Cornwall, christened on 4 May 1755 in Tremaine, , Cornwall, England, UK, died in 1845 in Cornwall, England, UK at age 93, and was buried on 2 Jan 1845.
ii. Mary BAKER

Second Generation
1. Wilmot BAKER married John EBBOT, son of Gregory EBBOTT and Dorothay UPTON, on 26 Jun 1775 in Tremaine, Cornwall, England.

Children from this marriage were:
i. Philip Upton EBBOTT was christened on 7 Feb 1776 in Tresmeer, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, died on 20 May 1851 in Trerunmer, Tresmeer, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom at age 75, and was buried on 23 May 1851.
ii. Elizabeth EBBOTT was born on 30 Jan 1778 in Badharlick, Egloskerry, Cornwall, England, UK and was christened on 30 Jan 1778 in Tresmeer, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.

3. Mary BAKER married John JOLIFFE
Children from this marriage were:
i. Mary JOLIFFE
ii. Grace JOLIFFE
iii. Richard JOLIFFE

I am interested in making contact with any other Ebbott/Baker researchers. I am also interested in how to go about finding the original document of John Baker?s will, any and all ideas welcome, I have done several searches (online) in the English archives but as yet have had no luck.
