Who was Margaret Cotter Barnes?

My great-great grandmother, Margaret Cotter (census' cite her varying birthdate 1821 - 1825) married John Haddock Barnes in abt 1843-1845. She was born in Canada, East which on later census' meant Ontario. Her parents came from either Ireland or Canada (varies on census')
How do I begin to search for her records when all I have are her US documents, (from NY to Ohio to Iowa to Omaha) but no leads or clues to specifically where in Canada she lived, where she married John Haddock Barnes (b 1825, Milton, NY) or who her parent were or where they were from.
Answers just lead to more questions...I hope to hear from you. Thanks, Loren

Where is the John H Barnes family in 1860 Ohio?

My greatgrandmother Catherine (b NY 1846) was 14 in 1860. She was the daughter of John Haddock Barnes (born Milton, NY 1825) and Margaret Cotter (born Ontario 1821 to 1825). I cannot find any evidence of Catherine's family in Ohio at that time. She had 3 younger brothers that were born in Ohio, starting in 1855. All other siblings were born in NY between 1846 and 1854. There are records of her father and brother Maurice Ray enlisting in the Union Army in Cincinnati in 1861 and Directory listings of John H Barnes in Cincinnati in 1862. I have searched 1860 Federal censuses attached to al her family members and nothing comes up (have even looked in Canada) what am I overlooking? Was there even an 1860 census? I can't even find her uncles and aunts.

Can you help me find any documentation regarding my husband's grandfather.

Joseph Brown (not his real name, arrived with forged passport and then name changed to Brown upon entry into this country-1911) was born in 1884 in (according to DNA results) Germany.

He and his wife Mamie (born Poland - same forged passport story) had one child- William Joseph Brown, born Jan 1916, NYC - died Goffstown, NH 1991. Have found NO documentation/evidence regarding birth or baptism of William, their residence in NYC, census information, occupation or certification of Joseph's death of pneumonia at 40 in 1924. He could have died in NYC or somewhere else in NY. Mamie married again - to Andrew Balko and lived in Hudson, NY until she died.

Usually answers lead to more questions, right now all I have is questions.

Thanks for your time. Regards, Loren Hoffman

What happened to Catherine Barnes Hoffman Hill's first husband?

That would be the Hoffman. C was born Catherine Ellen Barnes 1845, Lockport, NY. Her parents were John Haddock Barnes (1825 Milton, NY) and Margaret Cotter (1825 Canada) She had 2 children - Edith Totten Hoffman (born Ft Totten, Dakota Territory, 1867) and my grandfather, Harry Hoffman (born in PA, 1869). She went from NY to Ohio to Dakota Territory to PA to Iowa to Montana [marries Charles R Hill in 1877 in Lewis & Clark co.] and then to MN where she dies in 1905). After 1870 Edward Hoffman disappears. It's Edward Hoffman on Edith T's Minneapolis death record and John Hoffman on my grandfather's Minneapolis death record. Grandpa had NO clue as to where his mother was from, but Edith did. So I think Edith's info is more accurate. Both were consistent in that their dad was from Germany.
So who was her 1st husband- Edward or John and what happened to him? There is a Pvt Edward Hoffman who was part of a garrison listing in the 1870 US Federal census at Ft Sully, Dakota Territory from Germany who enlisted in Phila. PA. and there is a Lt WE Hoffman at Ft Totten (officers could have family on base).
ANY help/insights would be appreciated. My head hurts from banging against this wall.
Thanks, Loren Hoffman

Arthur Harry Hoffman- son of Catherine Barnes who is daughter of John Haddock Barnes

This a a photo of my grandfather- Arthur Harry Hoffman. His mother - Catherine Ellen Barnes (b 1845-1846) was the eldest daughter of John Haddock Barnes and Margaret Cotter of Lockport, NY). She's my great grandmother. Am searching for info on her and her 1st husband - Edward or John Hoffman. He disappears after 1870. They had a daughter Edith T (b abt 1868, Dakota Territory and a son, Arthur Harry (b somewhere in PA, abt 1870). Catherine and children live in Iowa, near her siblings and mother Margaret in 1870. Catherine leaves her son with Barnes family who move on and settle in Omaha, Nebraska. Catherine marries Charles Hill in Montana (1877) and they all settle in Minneapolis, MN in 1883. She dies in Minneapolis in 1905. Any info/photos welcome, especially if it's info on her 1st husband! Attached is tinted photo of my grandfather, Arthur Harry Hoffman in hopes that someone sees a resemblance.
