On 22 Januarry 1839 John Gilbert and family sailed from Plymouth onboard "Roxburgh Castle" with the children as "Bounty Immigrants" and the adults paying full passage being too old. After rounding the Cape of Good Hope John died as did Sarah Anne aged 1 year and 8 months. Son Thomas Gilbert was also onboard "Roxburgh Castle" with his family and lost his son Owen at sea. They were paid ?18 bounty for each child that died in transit. The ship arrived at Sydney Cove 26th May 1839. All the Gilberts could read and write except the youngest and all were Wesleyan Methodists.

William was an agriculturist, labourer, undertaker and carpenter and Lived at Port Stevens Street, Raymond Terrace NSW Australia. He was active in the church and held regular gatherings of Methodists in his home until funds enabled him to build a wooden church at Millers Forrest near Raymond Terrace in 1875-6.
After his wife died William moved for a time to Wallsend NSW until his mother died and he then returned to Raymond Terrace where he died and was buried with his wife and son Owen.

Notes for THOMAS GILBERT:
They travelled to Rotorua New Zealand and lived near the pink and white terraces which were destroyed in a volcanic eruption of Mt. Tarawera on 10-6-1886. They then went to Tasmania and settled at Oatlands named by Governor Macquarrie in 1821.
They named thier next child born 13-9-1844 after Port Arthur, grandfather John, his father Thomas, their best friend Langtry and the town Oatlands. So was christened Arthur John Thomas Langtry Oatlands GILBERT.
A daughter was born two years later named Clara Harriet GILBERT 12-3-1847. The local census 1-1-1848 showed the family living at Queen Anne Street Oatlands in a brick dwelling and that they were Wesleyan Methodists. Thomas worked as a Goal Warder but his trade was watch and clock maker. onvicts were constructing a road from George Town to Hobart and a Goal for the chain gang was constructed at Oatlands and then extended to take on female convicts.
By may 1849 the family had moved to Raymond Terrace NSW where Thomas worked as a postman. They then moved to Stroud and then to Rosenthal on the Myall River where Thomas acquired land and built a sawmill and had a boat "S.S. MYALL" christened by his daughter Grace to transport timber along the coast of NSW.
Late in life he moved to Newcastle and opened a "Clock Makers" shop. He had a house at Beaumont Street Hamilton where both Thomas and Mary died and were then burried at Sandgate. They had 9 children altogether.

Alfred James Holman was a carpenter as was his father. He was born in Camden Town in the County of Middlesea and baptised at St. Pancras Church London and migrated to Australia in 1871. He married Sophia Cupit in Orange NSW in the Trinity Church Of England on 30th. November 1876. He was aged 28. Their first child was stillborn and after the birth of their second child they moved from Orange to Windsor and moved into one of the houses on the Cupit land in George Street. Alfred built addittional houses and replaced those built by his fatherinlaw.
"Cupitt house" can be seen today as it is a coffee shop last occupied by Nora Cupit nee McMahon, a teacher who taught grade three at Windsor Primary and had Jack Holman and his son Robert as pupils.
Alfred continued to work as a carpenter in the Windsor district but contracted typhoid from contaminated foundations of a house he was demolishing in the town and died shortly after in 1855 aged 36. Sophia was left with three children 4 years and under to raise.
It is noted that a school boy who sold her a load of fire wood for 2/6 stole a grindstone valued at 2/-. George PLATT pleaded guilty in the local court and was imprisoned for 7 days.
