I have been looking for any members of my grandmother's Shelton side of the family for a long time, with no luck. She was born June 1,(1898-1900?) in the Devil's Fork section of Flag Pond Tn. in Unicoi County. She told us that her mother died when she was very young and that a family named Briggs raised her. Some of our family members say that her parents were not married and some say that they were married. She married under the name Martha Elizabeth Hensley to Pierce Leander Wykle in 1918. She said that she sometimes went by Shelton and sometimes she went by Hensley. We don't know which one of her parents was the Shelton and which one was the Hensley. She had a brother named Garfield and a brother named Harrison and maybe another brother. She also had a sister named Maude and a sister named Pearl or Parlee and maybe another sister. She said that her uncle, Henry Shelton, helped her catch a train from Greeneville Tn. to Greenville S.C. when she ran away. One family member said that Henry Shelton was Martha's mother's brother. She also mentioned that she was related to the Millers and Guinns or Quinns. Thanks for any information.
I have been looking for any information on my grandmother Martha Elizabeth Hensley Wykle's side of the family for quiet a long time now, with no luck. I would like to find out who her parents were. There are two rumors about her in our family. One is that her parents were not married and the other is that they were married. We have heard that one of her parents was a Hensley and that one was a Shelton, but we don't know which one was the Hensley and which one was the Shelton. She was born,( best that I can find out, )June 1, 1900, in the Devil's Fork section of Unicoi County Tn. near Flag Pond. I have been told that at times ,she went by Hensley and at times she went by Shelton. She married under Hensley. She told us that her mother died when she was very young and a Briggs Family raised her. She had a brother named Garfield and a brother named Harrison and maybe one more. She also had a sister named Maude and a sister named Pearl or Parlee. She said that when she turned eighteen her uncle ( Henry Shelton ) helped her run away. She caught a train from Greeneville, Tn. to Greenville, S.C. I was told that Henry was her mother's brother. She met my grandfather ( Pierce Leander Wykle ) in Greenville S. C. while he was on leave from the Army. They married in Greenville S.C. and from there they went to my grandfather's home in Jackson County N.C. That is where they remained ( except for a time that they lived in Buncombe County N. C.) until they died. They are buried at Barkers Creek in the Whittier section of Jackson County N. C.She talked about being related to the Millers and the Guinns or Quinns. Thanks for any information.
I have just started looking for my great grandfather John Lovelace. I have heard that he was from Rutherford County N.C. or McDowell County N.C. My grandfather Charles Alexander Harwood, was born out of wedlock March 3, 1888, in Buncombe County N.C. to John Lovelace and Emma Harwood. John was married to Emma's sister Sara Jane at the time. A few years later Emma gave birth to another son Lee Harwood, also born out of wedlock by John. Sara Jane also had several children by John. Emmit Lovelace, John Lovelace Jr., Ruth Lovelace, Allie Lovelace, Eva Lovelace, and maybe more. My grandfather Charles said that John Sr. came to Buncombe County N.C. in the early 1880's to work for the railroad when it first came to Western North Carolina. We have been told that he had Native American blood. I would like very much to find out who his parents were. Three of John's daughters, Allie, Ruth, and Eva, worked at Asheville School for Boys at Asheville N. C. in the 1930's 40's and 50's. I remember meeting them when I was a teenager. Thanks for any information.
