Elizabeth Annie HOWIE nee UNWIN 1865 - 1927

***This is a Post from Facebook that I have written for my cousins.

I wanted to share this photo with You all, I just found it today. This is the Final Resting Place of Our Great Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Annie HOWIE 1865 - 1927. I think it is the most beautiful thing I've seen lately; a simple inscription on her headstone that says "OUR DEAR MOTHER".

I like that. This woman is dear to my heart, because she is the first "Forebear" that I found by myself; over and above what Grandad Howie had told me. She was born Unwin, Her Father was Thomas Zair Unwin; an ex-Royal Canadian Rifle; and her mother was Anne Read who born in Island Cove, Newfoundland. After they had 3 daughters they returned to Birmingham. They immigrated to New Zealand on board the Castle Carisbrooke in 1874. They settled in Kaiapoi, 14 miles north of Christchurch.

In 1885, Elizabeth married William HOWIE, a Sailor who was originally born in Victoria, AUSTRALIA; He and his Parents, Captain James HOWIE and Rachel had all emigrated to New Zealand and settled in Greymouth, He was an only child. William & Elizabeth lived first in Salt Water Creek, and their First Son, Francis James HOWIE was born there in 1886. He was our Great Grandfather. Their next son Cyril William HOWIE was born in 1889 in Mount Grey; a little further North. Frederick Hubert was next in 1890. This son died as an infant, later when the Family moved to Palmerston North, in the North Is. NZ., Elizabeth had children also in Fielding, Olive Bobby 1892 HOWIE, and Evelyn Colyton HOWIE 1894. The next daughter, Dorothy HOWIE 1899 was born in Bulls, NZ. I would assume the Family was in Palmerston North next by the time Tommy HOWIE the youngest was born in 1904. William HOWIE was employed as the Station Master at the Palmerston North Railway Station.

Elizabeth HOWIE was a School Teacher, and She was a working Mother; based at the Taikorea School. The History of Taikorea School documented that Mrs E.A.Howie often suffered bouts of Poor Health. However, she continued as a Teacher for most of her Life; and her last position was as the Head-Mistress of Roseneath School, in Wellington, NZ. She was a Pidgeon enthusiast, and kept other birds as well; and was quite a pillar of the community; and a participant in Local events.

William Howie died before Elizabeth, and Im looking for his grave in Palmerston North. Subsequently, Elizabeth died as a Widow in 1927. She was buried at the Karori Cemetery; and of course, a picture of her Headstone is featured below.
