Elizabeth Annie UNWIN - Pupil Teacher at Kaiapoi Borough School

Extract from Press, Volume XXXI, Issue 4226, 13 February 1879, Page 3.

KAIAPOI BOROUGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE
The monthly meeting of the members of this committee was held on Monday evening. Present - Messrs Johnston (chairman), Pashby, Coup, Parnham, Young and Matthews.
Letters were read - From the Board of Education, calling attention to the irregularity of the employment of Miss Unwin as a pupil teacher, and pointing out that pupil teachers, being apprentices, had to be appointed under agreemnts with the Board. After some search had been made, it was found that no record had been kept by the committee of Miss Unwin's engagement, and it was decided that the secretary say that it was an omission on his part that a letter recommending this appointment had not been made....
From the Board, forwarding salaries for the month, but declining to pay for instruction of Messrs Veysey and Todd as pupil teachers, the former being out of his engagement and the latter only on half-pay, conditional on passing next examination; also that Miss Unwin's salary was withheld till the Board was advised of her appointment.
From Mr E.Rayner, head master .... claimed to be entitled to the fees for teaching Veysey and Todd, especially the latter, as having to give him extra instruction for an hour and a half each day. The Chairman advocated the reasonableness of the head master's claim for the instruction of the pupil teachers. Mr Pashby said the committee ought to recommend the Board to pay, otherwise it was taking advantage of Mr Todd's services.

HOWIE - House fire in Saltwater Creek, Canterbury, NZ (1891)

Extract from the STAR - reference is on the image.

I would imagine that the 3 children referred to in the article would be Francis James, Cyril William and Frederick Hubert.

___________________________________________________________________________________________
Fire at Saltwater Creek - Between twelve and one o'clock this morning a four-roomed house at Saltwater Creek owned by Mr R.Leggett, and occupied by Mrs Howie and her three children, was totally destroyed by fire, together with all the contents. At twenty minutes to one, Mrs Howie was awakened by smoke in her bedroom, and had barely time to escape through the window with her children. The origin of the fire cannot be accounted for. Mr Leggett had the building insured with the Union Company for 100 pounds, but his loss is fully 50 pounds above that amount. It is understood that Mrs Howie has an insurance on her furniture, but the amount and office have not transpired.
