Deceased, who was only 37 years of age, had been in failing health for some years past and on Saturday evening was seized with a paralytic stroke, which reduced him to a very weak state. OBITUARY of John 8 Dec 1923
The death took place at Picton this week of Mr John A. R. Greensill, of 'Brooklyn' Picton, at the age of 83. Born at Haulbowline Island, Cork, where his father (Mayor Greensill) was Commissary Ordance Officer, Mr Greensill came to New Zealand in 1856 with his brother-in-law, the late Hon. Captain Baillie, M.L.C. Some time later Mr Greensill took up Arapawa Island, in the Sounds. He represented the Sounds on the old Provincial Council and was one of the very few survivors of that body. He was for a time Mayor of Picton and was instrumental in obtaining for the borough the oldest lay reader in the Dominion of the Church of England, having served in that capacity for 61 years. He was a cousin of the late Earl Roberts. Mrs Barrer (Nina), of Masterton, is a daughter.

* It is with regret that we have to announce the death last night of Mrs J. A. R. Greensill, of Picton, youngest daughter of Mr Justice Conolly, at the early age of 29. The deceased lady had been a sufferer for some time, but it was only after her confinement about a fortnight ago that the symptoms of a pulmonary disease became apparent, and from that time the gradual weakening that has been apparent left but little hope of her recovery, and her death last night was therefore hardly a surprise. She leaves behind many relatives and friends to mourn her decease, and two little ones to comfort the bereaved. His Honor Mr Justice Conolly is expected over from Wellington where the Court of Appeal is to sit on Monday, but the date of the funeral will not be fixed till his arrival

We regret to have to record the sudden decease yesterday of Mrs Greensill, of Picton. Mrs Greensill had been ailing for a few days, though her indisposition was not thought to be a dangerous character. On Saturday she was considerably better, but on Sunday morning at nine o'clock, just after she had risen from the breakfast table, she appeared to be choking and fell back and remained unconscious up to the time of her death which occurred at 5.30p.m. Mrs Greensill was a daughter of the late Mr T. W. Downes, who held various appointments under the Provincial Government in the old days, when the seat of government was at Picton. The deceased had a large circle of friends in the province and leaves seven children to mourn her loss. The funeral will take place at 2p.m. on Wednesday.

NOTES
* The youngest of seven surviving children of John Abraham Roberts Greensill & Selina Rebecca Downes, Nina Agantha Rosamond Greensill, was a teacher & community leader. She married 16 Nov 1904 in Picton, to Thomas Robert Barrer, an engineer. The couple lived in Wellington for the next few years before moving to Wairarapa, where Thomas became a sheepfarmer at Te Wharau. They also had a house in Masterton and spent the rest of their lives in the Wairarapa. In 1959 she was made an MBE for her services to education. Widowed in November 1951, she died in Masterton on 17 September 1965, survived by three sons and a daughter
* John Abraham Roberts Greensill was the Mayor of Picton. In 1905 he was occupying the chair for the fourth time. He named his Picton home on Waikawa Road, "Brooklyn" (demolished in 1992). They received many visitors for afternoon tea or to play tennis, among them was Kathleen Beauchamp who later changed her name to Katherine Mansfield (the writer). Katherine would sometimes go with John to the little Koromiko church, St John in the Wilderness, on a Sunday (now a Heritage Place). Lottie Frame (nee Godfrey), mother of Janet Frame, the writer of 'An Angel At My Table', was a housemaid to the Picton Beauchamps .. (some exerts from Katherine Mansfield Walk)

Ships to LYTTELTON 1850 - 1879

Unless otherwise stated, the ships are listed here in order of Date Of Departure. This does not mean they arrived in this order. That depended on weather conditions, size and speed of ship, number of ports called at and other variables. I have seen voyages that took two months and others taking much longer (Kensington in 1862 took over 5 months). This is obviously not an extensive list as other arrivals were often found during research. Others will be added as found 322

NOTE There is a Samuel (1826-1911) and Susan (1826-1906) Barrell buried at Mangatainoka, Pahiatua. Their headstone reads: In memory of one of the original Canterbury pilgrims by arriving in Lyttleton 1855 on the "Grassmere", the first immigrant ship.(?). Unsure why that is written because of course, the first ship was the 'Charlotte Jane' which arrived in Lyttelton in the morning of 16 Dec 1850 and the Randolph arrived in the afternoon. The 'Sir George Seymour' arrived the following day and the 'Cressy' on 27th. The 'Grassmere' arrived 4 May 1855, there were more than 35 immigrant ships into Lyttelton before her

Passenger List RANGITOTO, Wellington to Southampton 1954

THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY (LIMITED)
Passenger List 21 Jan 1954 (needs free sign in)
"RANGITOTO" departed Wellington 21 Jan 1954 for Southampton
NOTE I found that the occupation written on the passenger list was not indicative of what they did, but something was required on the passenger list. An example is Monty Pierard who was simply listed as 'clerk' when he was actually a Canon/Churchman with an MBE and his wife as 'Domestic'. Another is Lieutenant Colonel John W Mckewgow who was simply listed as 'Farmer'. All 252 occupations listed as 'domestic' have been removed (after all, this was 1954, not 1854)
* Estimated Birth Year is what is written at above site. However, the sailing was in Jan so probably out by a year. I have changed those I have researched. Death year will be added as found.
* As with all such lists, it is advised you also do your own research. This is just a help on your ancestors movements.
* All listed as British Nationals unless otherwise stated

The RANGITOTO

Maori Pioneer Battalion, Roll of Honour 1915-1920

Major changes were made to the nature and form of Māori military service in late 1915 and early 1916. The Maori Contingent ceased to exist and Māori troops were incorporated into the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion, sometimes referred to as the Maori Pioneer Battalion. They were not front-line fighting units but a military labour force trained and organised to work on engineering duties, digging trenches, building roads & railways and taking on any other logistical tasks deemed necessary. This was essential and dangerous work that was often carried out under fire

*Major George Augustus King, formerly staff captain of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, was appointed as commanding officer. Te Rangi Hīroa was promoted to major and made second-in-command. Both men were considered to have the leadership qualities needed to pull the battalion together. Neither the Otago Mounted Rifles nor the Māori were happy with this reshuffle. The Otago men in particular resented becoming pioneers.
*Hēnāre Kōhere was a 36 year old Lieutenant, a man of great mana, from the East Coast. On 15 Sep 1916, the first day of the NZ attack on the Somme, 12 Pioneers were killed and 40 wounded. One of those mortally wounded was Kōhere, who told those attending him, 'Ka nui te kino' (Things are very bad). He gave instructions that his cousin, Lieutenant *Pekama Kaa, should take control of his Ngāti Porou platoon. He died the next day and was buried at Heilly. Kaa assumed leadership of the platoon until he too was killed in August 1917.

The PIONEER BATTALION returned from war on 6 April 1919
More than 1000 men of the battalion arrived in Auckland on the Westmoreland on the evening of 5 April 1919. As the ship came in to the wharf the next morning, guns fired a salute, steamers sounded their sirens and bands played patriotic music. Dignitaries, including Acting Prime Minister James Allen, greeted the men with brief speeches. The battalion then marched to a pōwhiri (welcome ceremony) at Auckland Domain, where representatives of iwi (tribes) from throughout the country greeted them. After this initial welcome, the various units returned to their home regions.
