Wong ah Poo (APPO) Hoc Ting (HOCTON) - first Chinese immigrant to New Zealand

Appo Hocton was born in China, the son of Fook Ting and his wife, Pae See

He left China at about nine years of age and served on various English ships as a cabin-boy and a steward

Appo is 'famous' for being the first Chinese immigrant to New Zealand, arriving in Nelson on the 26th May 1842 on the immigrant ship THOMAS HARRISON where he was a ship's boy.
When the ship berthed in Nelson he and some other crew members jumped ship.
- he said one reason was the captain's refusal to supply soap with which to wash his clothes

He settled in Nelson, married twice and had children, with his descendants numbering over 1600 at the beginning of the millenium
He was a servant, a landlord, a carter, a farmer
By 1849 was working as a carter in Nelson, where he rented a one acre section with a cottage, barn and 10 cattle. Literate, astute and hard-working, he prospered in his business and in 1852 applied for naturalisation in order to acquire and lease real property, which as an alien he was not permitted to do...

WONGAN HILLS, Western Australia

WONGAN HILLS is a town in the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu, in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia.

The town is approximately 182 km north of Perth

The town is named for a nearby range of hills that are found to the north-west of the town, also named Wongan Hills, which was first recorded in 1836 by Surveyor General of Western Australia
John Septimus Roe.

The area was settled by the 1900s, and in 1911 the town was gazetted and named after the range. "Wongan" is derived from the Indigenous Australian name "wangan-katta", "wanka" and "woongan".
"Katta" is known to mean "hill", but the meaning of "wongan" is uncertain. It may be related to "kwongan", an indigenous word for sandplain, or "whispering", in which case "wongan katta" would mean "whispering hills" (katta is a word for hill).

In 1925 an agricultural research station was established about 5 km north of the town which assisted in the diversification and improvements in farm practices through the state.

The area is a prosperous agricultural region with activities focused on sheep, grain and pig-farming

WOODVILLE A. and P. SHOW

Old Gorge Cemetery Woodville
is situated 152km from Napier 165km from Wellington on the main line of railway and is 3 miles distant from the Manawatu Gorge. It was formerly a part of the Seventy-mile Bush, but is now a prosperous dairying settlement, with thriving industries established. Woodville is also an important central railway junction as it connects the East and West Coast railroads. The country south of Woodville is flat for some miles, but on all other sides the hills rise close to the town.
