Press, 7 May 1918 THE FALLEN AND WOUNDED Sergeant Walter Charles Cropp, Canterbury Regiment (killed in action), was the son of Mrs H. J. Cropp, of Bealey avenue, Christchurch. Born in Christchurch, he received his education at the East Christchurch School, and was for about fourteen years in the Christchurch City Council Office. For the four or five years preceding his departure for camp he acted as town clerk for the Riccarton Borough Council, and in this connexion was well and popularly known. He enlisted, and was turned down, but was passed as fit after being called up in the ballot. He joined the Forces as a private, but in camp gained the rank of sergeant, and left New Zealand with the 32nd Reinforcements. He was the sixth son (actually the 3rd of six sons of Stephen CROPP & Ellen/Helen Jane WILSON). Three of his brothers are in Christchurch, and one in Dunedin. One of them, Mr A. L. Cropp (Albert Leonidas Cropp 1880-1948), secretary for Edmond's Baking Powder Co., Christchurch, received his last letter from him from Sling Camp, and the date on this indicates that he could not have been in the firing line long before he met his death. Sergt. Cropp leaves a widow, a daughter of the late Dr Gunn, of Kaikoura, who lives in Christchurch. Upon the motion of the Mayor (Mr H. Holland), the City Council last evening carried a motion expressing its sincere sympathy in their bereavement with the widow and other relatives of the late Sergeant Cropp. A similar motion was passed by the New Brighton Borough Council, which expressed its sympathy with the Riccarton Borough Council on its loss

... Wrigglesworth and Binns (J. D. Wrigglesworth and F. C. Binns,) Photographers, Willis Street, Wellington, and at Christchurch and Dunedin. Telephone 161. Bankers, Bank of Australasia, Private residences: Mr Wrigglesworth, Upper Dixon Street; Mr Binns, Christchurch. London agents: Messrs Mawson and Swan.
The business of this celebrated firm of photographers was established in 1863 and was carried on by its originator, Mr Wrigglesworth, until 1871, when he was joined by Mr Binns. Their premises are large and of good appearance, being five stories high, and possessing a floorage space of something like 10,000 square feet. Messrs Wrigglesworth and Binns have always maintained a very high excellence in all their work, and in 1879 gained first award at the Sydney exhibition. Again in 1881, they were similarly successful at Melbourne, and at the New Zealand exhibition of 1885 they carried off the only first award given in New Zealand for portrait photography. Though they have at various times done a good deal in the landscape branch, their efforts have been mainly devoted to the production of high-class portraits. The firm are patentees of the process which has become so well known under the name of the “Matt-Opal Type Process,” which gives a most delicate finish to the work (more at his link)

Fraser transferred his interest to Gunn the following year, but, undeterred, Gunn increased his landholding in 1929 by acquiring four leases totalling more than 25,000 acres in the Hollyford Valley. He then moved to the valley, establishing his base at Deadman's Hut on the banks of the Hollyford River; his wife took the children to Oamaru to be educated. His clothes reeking of smoke from Deadman's Hut, he returned to his family for brief visits only twice a year, extolling the beauties of the Hollyford, which was now consuming his whole life
... In 1950 Gunn was badly injured when he slipped over a bluff, and from that time he began to age noticeably. On Christmas Day 1955 he nudged his horse into the Hollyford River near Hidden Falls with a 12-year-old boy mounted behind him. The horse stumbled and fell, and both riders were swept away and drowned. Gunn's body was never found. He was survived by his wife, Ethel, and the children ... more

MALCOM GUNN died in Launceston, Tasmania in January 1900
BLENDA GUNN died in Kyneton, Victoria in September 1915
The Kyneton guardian, September 21, 1915 Death of Madam Gunn - Mrs Blenda Gunn, known locally as Madam Gunn, who carried on business as a herbalist in Kyneton for several years past died in the hospital at 3a.m. yesterday. She was removed to the institution from her home in Piper street on Wednesday last by Sergeant Simmons and Constable Phillips. She had reached an advanced age and her death was due to senile decay. Madam Gunn was very helpless, not as was popularly supposed, as the result of rheumatism, but on account of a serious accident that happened to her prior to her coming to Kyneton. While living in the premises in High Street on the site of the medic studio, she narrowly escaped on one occasion being burned to death on account of the difficulty experienced in getting her out of her home which had caught fire from the premises next door. After her death it was discovered by the police that she had left a will and had also made provision for the purchase of the ground for her burial in the Kyneton cemetery and for the erection of a stone over her grave. It was also found that she had money deposited in local banks to the amount of £167 16s and cash in hand amounting to over £4. There are many in Kyneton who give Madam Gunn credit for having cured them of serious ailments, and who recommended others to her treatment. For many years she carried on business in premises in High street but about six months ago she removed to Piper street. She has been in declining health for several weeks past. The interment will take place in the Kyneton cemetery, the funeral leaving the Kyneton hospital at 2pm today. She has no relatives in Australia, as far as can be ascertained

WEDDING of William Patrick KILLEEN & Isabella KENYON
Susan's parents

... A quiet wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents on Tuesday last, when Mr William P. Killeen was married to Miss Isabella Kenyon (daughter of Mr Hugh Kenyon, J.P., of Thorpe). The ceremony was performed by the Rev O. R. Hewlett. The bride, who was given away by her father, was attired in a beautiful dress of cream silk with prettily draped bodice and train, and wore a handsome veil and orange blossoms. She was attended by two bridesmaids, Misses Clarice and Edith Thorn (nieces of the bride), who looked very pretty in cream cord dresses, trimmed with silk buttons and ribbons and cream picture hats. They each wore gold and pearl brooches, the gifts of the bridegroom. Mr Herbert Hyde was best man. After the ceremony the assembled guests were entertained at breakfast, when the usual toasts were honoured. The large number of costly and useful presents, some of which came from the West Coast and the North Island, testified to the popularity of the happy couple. Later in the day Mr and Mrs Killeen left for Nelson en route to Westport, where they will in future reside. The brides' travelling dress was a smart green mixture tailor-made costume, with a very pretty green chip hat to match, trimmed with silk and ostrich plumes.

Nelson Evening Mail, 18 May 1876...Gun Accident of THOMAS EDEN
Susan's maternal great grandfather

... On Monday last a party of sportsmen were out shooting in the Motupiko Valley (Tasman) when a gun accident occurred, which administered a severe fright to one or two, but fortunately did little harm. As Thomas Eden was firing at some tuis his gun burst with a very loud explosions, tearing the barrel and stock into fragments, which were sent flying in all directions. Strange to say Eden escaped without any injury beyond being rendered completely deaf for two days. William Gibbs, who was standing close to him at the time, had an equally narrow escape, as a fragment of the barrel struck him on the back just below the belt, going through a pea coat, a new pair of moleskin trowsers and flannel, and taking off a piece of skin about the size of a florin (20c). The gun was a very ancient weapon, and worn very thin at the breech, which induces the correspondent to whom we are indebted for the above information this to moralize:- So much for the safety of old favourite guns that are apt to go off at either end

Nelson Evening Mail, 17 March 1879 FIRE destroys Thomas Eden's home
... It is reported that a serious fire occurred at Waimea West early this morning resulting in the total destruction of the house, stacks, and outbuildings belonging to Mr Thomas Eden. We have been unable to ascertain the full particulars. It was insured in the Norwich Union for £150 on the house and furniture (March 2013 equivalent of $18,000)

The Maffra, 14 March 1898...DEATH of Peter Killeen
Susan's paternal grandfather

... SUDDEN DEATH AT STRATFORD - Peter Killeen, aged 55 years, who has been living alone in a house near Stratford for some time, was found dead at his house, having evidently died very suddenly, as when found he was fully clothed and lying across his bed. He had not been seen for a day or two, and neighbours had watered his horses, but as he did not appear they grew suspicious and made a search for him, and found him on Friday last. Mr Crockett, J.P., held an inquiry, and on the evidence of Dr. Chapman, who had made a post mortem examination of the deceased, and stated the cause of death was syncope due to alcoholic pneumonia, a verdict was returned accordingly. The deceased was an old resident of the district, and there is a large family of sons. His brother, Mr Maurice Killeen (1847-1919), of The Heart, Sale, 25km south of Stratford is a Councillor of the Avon Shire, and great regret was expressed to him. The remains were interred in the Nuntin cemetery on Saturday.

Colonist, 3 June 1916... GOLDEN WEDDING of Hugh & Susan Kenyon
Susan's maternal grandparents

... Tuesday, May 23rd, was the anniversary of the marriage of Mr and Mrs Hugh Kenyon, of Dovedale, they having been married on Mary 23rd 1866, in Spring Grove, Nelson, by Bishop Hobhouse. Mr Kenyon, who has attained the age of 83, and Mrs Kenyon, who age is 73 years, were among the first settlers to take up their abode in the Dovedale Valley, and they endured many hardships of which the younger generation know nothing. Mr and Mrs Kenyon brought up a large family, their number being ten, nine of whom are still living - three sons and six daughters:
Mrs George Kinzett, Awa
Mrs H. B. Thorn, Awa (Susan Margaret + Henry Bishop)
Mr David Kenyon, Ross
Mrs J. Mead, Greymouth (Annie Louisa + Joseph)
Mrs H. Hawkins, Collingwood (Ada + Henry Peter)
Mr Frank Kenyon, Bennett's
Mrs Killeen, Westport (Isabella 'Belle' + William Patrick)
Mrs W. O. Hewetson, Martinborough (Eunice Ainsworth + William Othen)
Mr Arthur Kenyon, Thorpe
Friends fathered from far and near to congratulate the worthy couple and the presents were both useful and numerous. Mr Arthur Kenyon, in a neat speech, presented his parents with a beautiful chiming clock, on behalf of their children. Miss Thelma Thorn, on behalf of the grandchildren (of whom there are 34), presented them with a silver teapot, which was handed to Mrs Kenyon by Mary Thorn and tiny Annie Kenyon jointly. The Win family, also old and respected residents, united and gave Mr and Mrs Kenyon a silver cream jug and sugar bowl. Afternoon tea was partaken of, the health of "The Bride and Bridegroom" being proposed by Mr H. Hawkins, and responded to by Mr Arthur Kenyon and Mr Kenneth Thorn respectively. "The Win Family" was proposed by Mr Arthur Kenyon and responded to by Mr Nobel WIn. In the evening about a hundred guests assembled in the Public Hall and an enjoyable time was spent with songs and dancing until an early hour

Colonist, 27 June 1916... DEATH of Hugh Kenyon
Susan's maternal grandfather

... The ranks of the hardy band of pioneer settlers of this district were further thinned yesterday by the death of Mr Hugh Kenyon, J.P., of Thorpe. Deceased, who was born in Scotland in the year 1833, came out to Australia in the early fifties. He at once went to the gold diggings, which were then in full swing, and worked there with more or less success until he was attracted to New Zealand by the Gabriel's Gully rush. In the year 1861 he came to this district, and took up an unimproved farm at Dovedale, which he developed into splendid property. The late Mr Kenyon took a keen interest in all matters which affected the welfare of the district, and served on the school committee and road board for many years. Deceased, who was highly respected in the district, leaves a widow and grown-up family of three sons and six daughters, viz., Mrs George Kinzett, Awa, Mrs H. B. Thorn, Awa, Mr David Kenyon, Ross, Mrs J. Mead, Greymouth, Mrs H. Hawkins, Collingwood, Mr Frank Kenyon, Bennett's, Mrs Killeen, Westport, Mrs W. O. Hewetson, Martinborough, Mr Arthur Kenyon, Thorpe; also thirty-four grandchildren. The deepest sympathy will be felt with the relatives in the loss they have sustained. Only recently Mr and Mrs Kenyon celebrated their golden wedding. The occasion was marked by a large family gathering, and the aged couple were recipients of presentations from the family and friends

Colonist, 26 June 1917 IN MEMORIAM
... KENYON - In loving memory of my dear husband, Hugh Kenyon, who departed this life June 26th, 1916. Inserted by his loving wife and family

CAULFIELD War Memorial WWI - A

this was an ANZAC project undertaken by janilye & ngairedith to honour the
(nearly 300) fallen soldiers that are commemorated on the Caulfield, Melbourne, War Memorial. Every soldier was thoroughly researched individually and all information is faithful to that available (many sources)
It was hoped all the soldiers' biographies would have been completed by ANZAC DAY 2013. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and there are still a few remaining.
These will be completed shortly
NOTE care was taken to edit overly sensitive information but this is a 'Roll of Honour' journal and some details may be graphic to some

IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN AND WOMEN
WHO DIED IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM

On the night of July 19, 1916, on a slice of lush farmland just north of the tiny town of Fromelles, the Australian Imperial Forces fought their first battle in France.
By morning, 1900 Australian men lay dead and 3100 were injured or missing. Outnumbered two to one, the men were ordered to cross a 400-metre patch of ground to reach the German lines — fields already covered by the bodies of English soldiers killed in a similar battle the year before. A few made it through, only to be cut off, captured or killed as they tried desperately to return to the Allied trenches.
It was high summer. During the next few days, German forces dragged hundreds of bodies from the fields to avoid disease and buried them in graves near the village. Most were recovered but one mass grave — at Pheasant Wood — remained undiscovered for 90 years
The bodies of more than 200 soldiers killed behind German lines were recorded officially as 'having died in the neighbourhood of Fromelles'. As at this date there are photos of 87 of these lost men of Fromelles with the remainder yet to be found and added to the above site

He was a scholar of the Black Flat State school, under Mr Burt and afterwards under Mr Lord, and subsequently attended Stott and Hoare's business college. "Bas" (as he was familiarly called) was the only son of Mr and Mrs Ames, of Nerrim-road, Murrumbeena. He was a good boy, and well respected and liked by everyone who knew him. TOP VALLEY COACH CAPSIZES IN THE WAIRAU

- DRIVER AND TWO PASSENGERS DROWNED
... The Top Valley coach, which left Blenheim at 10 o'clock yesterday in charge of driver Frederick Waskett (a man of about 40), met with a shocking accident when crossing the North Bank ford, a distance of about 22 miles from here. From the very inadequate details to had at 2 o'clock, it would appear that the coach must either have struck against a boulder or got into a deep hole. The coach carried as passengers, a man named Bolton, Mrs Frank Bonnington, of Top Valley, and her little baby a fortnight old.
Indications point to the fact that when the three were drowned no help was available. The disaster apparently did not become known for many hours and all that reached Blenheim concerning it last night was a rumour that gave little indication of the nature or extent of the accident.
The circumstances surrounding the case of Mrs Bonnington are peculiarly sad. This lady (who was formerly a Miss Eden, of Nelson) was only 29 years of age. She had been in Blenheim for her confinement, and was returning hone with her baby.
Bolton, who was saved, is a partner of Mr Ocean Thompson in a mining venture and was a stranger to the district.
Definite news only came to hand here this morning somewhere between 10 and 11 o'clock, and as soon as possible Sergt.-Major Mason despatched a party of police, with a boar, to recover the bodies of the man and the child.
Waskett was a man of 42 years, and has been driving the express to the Top Valley for two years. he was a most steady, reliable man. He was single, and had no relatives in the district, so far as is known.
Mrs Bonnington's body had been found when the news was sent. She was an old resident of the district and leaves a young family of four children
Mr Frank Bonnington had left home at 4 a.m. yesterday for the Show and must have missed the party in the coach on the way
