ORPHAN IMMIGRANTS on way to New Zealand
General interest (says the Calcutta 'Statesman' of October 23) will be felt in the 12 little emigrants - six boys and six girls - who are due in Calcutta this morning, by the Darjeeling mail, en route for New Zealand. They will be accompanied by the Rev. J. A. Graham, D.D., C.I.E., hon. Superintendent of St Andrew's Colonial Homes, (Rev. Dr. John Anderson Graham) and by a lady from Kalimpong, who will escort them to their destination.
Their ages vary from 14 to 16; and their names are
William HALL
Robert OCHTERLONEY
Ernest Herbert HUGHES
Llewellyn Cattel JONES
Charles Eric STUART
Robert SNELLEKSZ
Evelyn B. FULLARTON
Rose COOPER
Mary OCHTERLONEY
Nellie SAVIGNY
Dorothy HIGGINS
Mary SINCLAIR
.. The children sailed from Calcutta on the 24th October in the British India Company's steamer SANGOLA; and at Melbourne they will tranship for Dunedin, where they will be met by he Rev. James Ponder and conducted to the situations that await them. The boys will be placed on farms, and the girls will become 'lady helps'. for domestic servants are almost unknown in New Zealand, and the 'lady help' is treated as one of the family. The expenses of the children - Rs 3600 - are being paid by 12 Calcutta firms and merchants, each contributing 300 rupees; and the money is a special fund raised for the purpose by Mr James Luke and the other members of the Executive Committee. Alreay five emigrants, four boys and one girl - have been sent to New Zealand; but this is the first large batch of children to leave Kalimpong for the Antipodes. The careers of the young emigrants will be watched here with keen interest, for the Kalimpong training of self-help and self-reliance is just what is wanted in the colonies, and the demand in Australia and New Zealand for suitable emigrants is unlimited at present. The children will be entertained at a social meeting in the United Free Church Hall in Wellesley Street. The Sheriff of Calcutta has kindly promised to preside, and the Rev. Dr. Graham and the Hon. Mr Madge will make speeches

If you have any further information or corrections that could be added to this family to help those searching for their ancestors your help would be greatly appreciated ..

the settlers of MATAWHERO slain in the 1868 New Zealand WAR

Matawhero is 8km east of Gisborne
- (written about 1900 that link has many names and photos of the early settlers)

Makaraka Cemetery (also known as Houhoupiko Cemetery) is located on State Highway 2, 5 km north-west of the East Coast city of Gisborne and 2 km north-east of Matawhero. Makaraka was Gisborne?s first cemetery. Now closed to burials, it is maintained as an historic site

In the early hours of 10 November 1868, a war party led by Te Kooti Rikirangi of Rongowhakaata struck the small settlement of Matawhero. The attack was utu for Te Kooti's treatment after his capture at Waerenga-a-hika, three years earlier. Some 70 Maori and Europeans, including babies and the elderly, were killed. Eight months later many of the European remains were exhumed from the scattered graves in which they had been buried and reinterred in a section of riverside land set aside as a cemetery.

There were 45 Europeans and half-castes in Matawhero (five miles from Gisborne) when that area was invaded. Twenty-one were slain outright and one (Mrs. Wilson) received fatal injuries. The number of Europeans and half-castes at Makaraka (four miles from Gisborne) was 56, of whom all but three escaped. All the other European residents on the Flats got safely away, excepting three in the locality now known as King's Road and a like number on Repongaere. Most of the native victims lived on the outskirts of, or at no great distance from, Matawhero

In the aggregate the slain comprised: Europeans 29, of whom 13 were adult males, 7 adult females and 9 children; half-castes 4, of whom 3 were males and one a female; natives approximately 30; grand total, 63

On the 18th November 1868 a large armed party was sent out, under Captain A. Tuke, to bury the victims. Most of the bodies lay well clear of the debris of the burned homes

The names on the Memorial were taken from Matawhero NZ Wars memorial

A lot of information was taken from List of Victims at NZETC

They are now all buried together on the riverside in PLOT 1, BLOCK MKOLD/PBMM at Makaraka Cemetery - read individual notes for the original burials

the BAKERs buried in Gisborne Cemeteries New Zealand

Gisborne (Turanga-nui-a-Kiwa, "The place where 'Kiwa' - of the Takitimu waka - stood") is located at the north end of Poverty Bay. The white cliff headland of Young Nick's Head at the other end of the bay is visible from the city.
The Maori name for the cliffs is Te Kurī-a-Paoa, meaning The Dog of Paoa, as this was what it was originally said to look like

Gisborne is named after an early Colonial Secretary William Gisborne - it is the first city in the world to greet the sun each day

A freezing works was built at Taruheru, Gisborne in 1889, but only 200 and 300 sheep could be handled per day. The carcases, after being allowed to cool, were taken out in barges to the roadstead and placed on board the cold store hulk Prince of Wales, where they were frozen and stored pending the arrival of a Home vessel. In 1890 a freezing chamber was erected at Taruheru. Killings soon afterwards reached 750 per day. Nine years later, notwithstanding that a rival concern had been opened, the capacity of the works had to be doubled
The freezing works provided much employment in the area

The cemeteries in and around Gisborne are:
Makaraka - Makaraka Road
- Gisborne's earliest cemetery, was purchased in 1872. This historic cemetery contains many memorials to early pioneers of the Poverty Bay district. A War Memorial (costing ?155 at the time) in memory of the victims of the Poverty Bay Massacre of 1868 is to be seen here
- also known as Houhoupiko cemetery

May 1938 PARTY AT WAIMATA. Last Saturday evening Mr and Mrs Gambirazzi invited a number of friends to their home at Waimata Valley to a birthday party given in honour of their daughter, Miss Joan Gambirazzi and her friend, Miss Flo Holter. The guests enjoyed a jolly evening playing games and competitions and singing and dancing in a large room loaned by Mrs Scott. The winners of one competition were Mrs J. Scott and Mr S. Scott, while the latter was successful in another contest, for which the lady's prize was won by Miss Gambirazzi. During the evening items played on the piano-accordian by Mr Les Hollis were much appreciated. At supper-time the guests adjourned to the dining-room, where a dainty supper was served, a large birthday cake taking pride of place on the table.
The dining-room was prettily decorated with gold and yellow chrysanthemums intermingled with maidenhair fern. Mrs Gambirazzi received her guests wearing a blue floral crepe-de-chine frock. Miss Joan Gambirazzi chose a smart frock of floral georgette. A black satin frock with a floral velvet coatee to tone was worn by Miss Flo Holter.
* Joan married Stephen Keogh Horton in 1940
Jan 1941 Horton-Gambirazzi Pretty Wedding - At St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Lowe street, on Thursday, Dec 26, Joan Kathleen, second daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Gambirazzi, Waimata Valley, was married to Stephen Keogh, third son of Mr and Mrs W. Horton, Hastings. The ceremony was performed by the Rev Father J. W. McMahon. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a model frock of powder blue georgette cut on slender lines. Shirring accented the bodice at the shoulders and the neckline was V-shaped. White accessories were worn and the bride's only ornament was a string of pearls. She carried an exquisite bouquet of pink sweet peas and carnations, intermingled with maidenhair fern. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Lloma Gambirazzi, wearing a frock of hydrangea blue moss crepe. The bodice was shirred diagonally and the flowing skirt fitted closely at the hops. Accessories to tone and a bouquet composed of pink carnations, combined with delicate greenery completed the ensemble. Mr William Holter carried out the duties of best man.
Leaving the church, the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe, the traditional emblem of good luck, by her youngest sister. After the ceremony a number of guests were entertained at a delightful reception at Le Grande Lounge.
Mrs Gambirazzi, mother of the bride was wearing a frock of navy blue floral crepe de chine, with matching accessories. She carried a posy of red and cream carnations, intermingled with greenery.
Miss Doreen Gambirazzi, sister of the bride, wore a frock of moss green linen and a hat to tone.
An array of charming wedding presents were received by the bride and bridegroom, who are making their future home in Napier. The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a double string of Richelieu pearls and to the bridesmaid a gold initialled signet ring.
April 1943 Mrs S. K. Horton and her small son, of Napier, are the guests of her sister, Mrs W. Holter, Makaraka.

Walter and son Jack in an accident
Dec 1929 CAR GOES OVER BANK - Accident at Waimea. Serious head injuries were sustained by a roadman, Walter Gambirazzi, in an accident at Waimata Valley late yesterday afternoon, when a car went over the bank and as a result the injured man was admitted to the Cook Hospital last evening. The driver of the car, Valentine Bayne, another roadman, was unhurt. It appears that Mr Bayne drove Mr Gambirazzi and his son, Jack Gambirazzi, down the road at Waimata to fetch some horses from the vicinity of Mr M. B. Mander's homestead and on the return journey Mr Gambirazzi jun., drove the horses, while his father and Mr Bayne followed behind in the car. On the way the car had to cross a low bridge and it was necessary for the driver to change down into second gear to negotiate the steep rise at the farther end of the structure. At this point the road was very narrow and while Mr Bayne was changing gears the car ran off the road and over the bank into the creek. As the car went over the bank Mr Gambirazzi was thrown out and sustained injuries to his back and serious injuries to his head. Mr Bayne was unhurt and he and another man brought Mr Gambirazzi into town for medical attention, the doctor ordering his removal to hospital.

death of their mother Harriett
Gisborne Herald, 31 March 1941 The death of Mrs Harriet Annie Gambirazzi at the Cook Hospital on Saturday night removes on who has lived in the Waimata Valley for the past 26 years and who, during that time, took a prominent part in social activities. Mrs Gambirazzi, who was born in Auckland 47 years ago, married Mr W. J. Gambirazzi in Gisborne and has lived in the Waimata Valley ever since. She took much interest in the Women's Institute and Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Her death occurred after an illness extending over six months. She is survived by her husband, one son and four daughters, to whom much sympathy will be extended, The son, John, is with the New Zealand forces in Egypt. The daughters are Mrs F. K. Horton, Napier, Mrs G. Sands, Auckland and the Misses D. and L. Gambirazzi, Waimata.
