This is my gggrandfather who emigrated from Hannover, Prussia to London, Eng in 1840. He came via Rotterdam so far as we can tell. The story is that he left Roumania and/or Prussia to avoid compulsory conscription. Another anecdote is that he had a brother who went on to settle in US and who may have returned to the UK to team up with Henry after his divorce in 1858,and then the two resettled in the USA. He was a Jewish tailor who obviously had the skill to set up shop as a " tailor ride and habit maker" for the London gentry. It is said that he "bought" the name of Henry Harris. The UK records stop after the 1871 Census, apart from his mention as a tailoring manager as late as 1878 when a son married. Also his own marriage certificate in 1848 shows his father to be Mitchell Harris (although the spelling may not be reliable and should possibly be read as Mischael etc) Does this mean anything to others please? Peter Harris.
