I maintain a Carr surname database at Rootsweb

I maintain a Carr surname database at Rootsweb. I collate research queries and post them with the relevant name listings at my site. I've done quite a bit of Carr research on my own, but have also benefited from the research of others who have written to me. I've done extensive research on the Carrs of Rhode Island, but also have extensive information on southern NJ, NY and other areas. I've done census research and have included sources for the work I have conducted. You will have to read copies of emails and other notes at my site for other information. I have included a section within the index for topical information on Carrs. Look in my index under CARR_RINewportCoJamestown for information about Carrs who lived in Jamestown, RI (Newport Co), for example. Visit my home page, which is linked to My Carr Database, for further information about me and my genealogy research.

My personal quest is to validate the ancestry of James Carr born 12 Jul 1760 in Mount Holly, NJ (Burlington Co). Edson Carr in his book Carr Family Records (1894) linked James Carr to the Carrs of Manahawkin, NJ. Then he linked this Carr line back to the Colonial Governor of Rhode Island, Caleb Carr born 9 Dec 1624 and back to England.

The Edson Carr research seems weak to me; sources are lacking and the connections seem extremely tenuous. Personally I think Edson Carr erroneously designated Caleb Carr born 4 Nov 1719 (who married Sarah Ridgway) as James Carrs grandfather based on some poor seemingly anecdotal research found in Leah Blackman History of Little Egg Harbor. (You can find more details on this mixup at my site in the notes for James Carr)

I have determined that the date of birth for James is derived from his gravesite in Canaan Township, Wayne County Pennsylvania, which gives his age at time of death on 10 Jun 1811. James lived for a time in Greenwich, NJ, according to tax records, and died shortly after his family moved west to Wayne Co. His wife, Esther Vernon, aka Hester Varnell, lived in Northampton, NJ, now a part of Mount Holly. Captain James Carr was named executor of her father will in Northampton in the late 18th century.

I am descended from James and his son James, grandson James, great grandson George Nelson, and great great granddaughter Kathryn Lucilla.

I would be very interested in further information on this line of Carrs.
