Peter Coleman whose will was probated in 1808 in Grayson County, Virginia is as far back as I can currently trace my lineage. I believe that he was probably from Suffolk County New York because he became guardian of Youngs Coleman there in the 1700s. Peter owned a farm and mill in Rowan County,North Carolina. Family tradition also says that he was a freighter (wagoner).

My family line goes from Peter, to Abraham, and down through Zophar Sr., Zopher Jr., Albert Zopher, Fay Spencer, and Charles Zopher Coleman to me. The maternal line includes Janes, Smith, Pruitt, Rawlings, and Fleming.

My branch of the Colemans moved to Pike Co., KY, then to Parke County, Indiana, and on to Guthrie Co., Iowa. Since, they have spread all over the country although a distant relative still owns the family farm in Parke County, Indiana (as of Aug. 2014). They were in Parke County by the late 1820s or early 1830s. Abraham is supposed to be buried in Parke County having died in 1840. Perhaps, Abraham is buried in Bridgeton, Indiana, but I have not been able to locate the grave yet.

Interested in the family in general and my specific line with a particular interest in tracing and documenting Peter Coleman's parents.

Also, I found that a Peter Coleman worked for George Rodgers Clark during at least one of his military campaigns. He is credited with carrying documents between military commanders at one point during the campaign. It would be interested in knowing whether this Peter Coleman was our Peter Coleman from Rowan Co., North Carolina or Grayson County, Virginia.
