Connells of Headford and Abbeyknockmoy, Galway, Ireland

My ggg-grandfather was Stephen Connell B 1806 d. 1886. He was born in Headford, Galway, Ireland, but due to an unfortunate incident fled Headford and settled in Abbeyknockmoy, Galway, Ireland.

I beleive he had relatives in Abbeyknockmoy since his next door neighbor in Griffiths was a Michael Connell.

Stephen had two sons that I know of Richard (b. 1841) my gg-grandfather and James.

I also beleive that Stephen may have been married twice, and that Richard and James are his sons with Mary Dwyer whom he married in Taum 1838.

I know there are many Connells in Headford, but since the Headford parish records only go back to 1880, I am hoping someone with Headford Connell realtions is missing a few relatives, namely Stephen, Richard and James.

My family followed the tradtional Irish naming standard for children. First boy named after the husband's father, second son after wife's father, and so on. However, shortly after they immigrated to NYC, Hoboken and Jersey City NJ they added an O' becoming O'Connell.

The most common first names, starting with the most frequent in my family are Michael, James, John, Thomas, Patrick, with Richard and Stephen coming in last. This has led me to assume that Stephen Connell b. 1806 was a younger son in the family. If any of this rings a bell, please contact me.

We still keep in touch with the descendents of Stephen's b 1806 son James. His relations are still living near Tuam. We also have McDermott, Quinn, Cunnane, Mannion, Mahon, Madden, Burke and Higgins realtions in that area.

Thanks Sue Taylor
