East Indies Trading company (? Brittish)

I suspect my forebearers got their seafaring experiences aboard trading ships in early 1800's. Does anyone know how to research this area. Any tips gratefully received.

Married William TIGHE (Dublin 1882 - 1930) son of Michael, a Painter and Decorator (1859 - ?).
