Mrs. Priscilla Hargood

An old resident of Mount Eden, known to a wide circle of friends both in Auckland and in the Waikato district, Mrs. Priscilla Hargood died yesterday at her residence, 390 Mount Eden Road, in her 94th year.
Born in West Town, near Bristol (England) on October 9th, 1847, Mrs. Hargood was a daughter of a Somerset rope maker, Mr. Henry Garland. She retained vivid memories of her grandfather, who was a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars.
Mrs. Hargood was married three times. She came to New Zealand with her first husband. Mr. David Broom, in the sailing ship LADY JOCELYN, landing at Auckland on January 6th 1881. Mr. Broom died after farming in the Cambridge district for several years. Mr. Broom died after farming in the Cambridge district for several years and subsequently his widow married Mr. R.B. McChesney. After Mr. McChesneys death, she acted as postmistress at Tamahere for several years. Later she married Mr. J.D.Hargood who died some years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cooper Smith, with whom she lived, and one son.

Death of Mrs Worthy BROOM

We regret to have to announce the death of Mrs Worthy BROOM at Groes-road, Rogerstone about 8.30 on Tuesday evening at the advanced age of 71.
The husband of the deceased died a little over a week ago, & the funeral took place last Wednesday. The death of her husband, & the fact that she had been suffering from a severe bronchial attack, no doubt hastened the old ladys end. This is the fourth death that has taken place in the same family in less than four months, & the deceased were all well known in the district & held in high esteem. The greatest sympathy will be extended to the relatives in their latest sad bereavement.

The funeral took place on Thursday of Mr Herbert BROOM, whose death occurred on Sunday evening after a brief illness. A large number of relatives were present, also employees of Messrs White & Co.s Pontymister, steel foundry, of which deceased was an employee.
A short service was held at the house, previously the funeral leaving for Cefn Chapel, at which another service took place, both being conducted by the Rev S Jones, Moriah Chapel, Risca.
The service at the grave side was taken by the Rev. F.H.Southall, Newport, who, in the course of his remarks, sympathetically referred to the widow & child of the deceased, also the aged parents of both deceased & his widow.
The deceased was held in deepest respect throughout the district, where he was well known, & signs of mourning were in evidence along the route from Risca to Bethseda Chapel. The coffin, of polished elm, was laden with wreaths, including one from deceaseds fellow workmen, his
sorrowing father & mother, his brothers & sisters, Mr & Mrs Johnson & family, father & mother in law, & many others.

Headlines - DEATH OF MR. WORTHY BROOM A Familiar Monmouthshire Character

One of the best known characters in Monmouthshire passed away early on Sunday morning, when the death took place of Mr. Worthy BROOM, who upwards of 45 years was in the service of Viscount Tredegar as gamekeeper.
The deceased, who was in his 72nd year, had resided in Groes-road, Rogerstone, where he died, for 33 years, & though he had not enjoyed the best of health for some time, it was only on Saturday morning that his condition gave causes for alarm. He persisted in getting up however, and came downstairs, where, in spite of the attention of Dr. Hudson, Rogerstone, and Dr Instance, Risca, he passed away, as he had always wished to do, in full harness, early Saturday morning.
Such a wish was typical of a man of the character of the deceased, & his death will be regretted by a host of friends both in the county & in Newport. Prior to residing in Rogerstone, he was stationed in the St. Bridess district, & lived at Ebbw Bridge for a number of years.
He was gamekeeper for his Lordship for a very scattered district, which included Henllys, Cefn, Pant-y-rheos, etc.; & while in this capacity he had many exciting experiences. Possessed of an iron nerve, these incidents did not appear to have had much of an effect on him, & when he could be induced to relate some of those affairs he passed over them lightly with a shrug of the shoulders, although the listener readily grasped how near to death Mr. Broom had been on many occasions.
Within the last two years the deceased was shot at by a poacher in the neighbourhood of Pant-y-rheos, but beyond a slight graze he was little the worse, & years ago when poaching was at its height, he effected a number of very smart captures & was complimented.
A REMARKABLE EPISODE
He was also the central figure in an ugly demonstration when his life was threatened by a crowd of infuriated men, one of whose number had met with his death by drowning in a poaching affray in which the man was followed by Mr. Broom. Although he dived headlong into the water in a gallant attempt to effect a rescue, Mr. Broom was unable to accomplish it, & at the inquest held subsequently, the assistance of armed gamekeepers had to be obtained to give him safe escort home.
The deceased was a native of Hullavington, Wiltshire. in the good old days he acted as parish constable, & retained his staff & handcuffs as momentoes of that period. he was a keen follower of Lord Tredegars hounds, & nothing gave him greater pleasure than to know that the hounds had a good days sport when in his district.
The deceased, who leaves a widow (who, we regret to say, is in failing health) two sons & five daughters, was a member of Station-street Primitive Methodist Church, Newport, & latterly had been attending the Primitive Methodist Church at Rogerstone.
He was a very outspoken man, &, as a staunch Conservative, rendered invaluable service during his long association with the Rogerstone Conservative association.
The interment will take place at Rogerstone Church at 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
