Seeking John Pell, whose daughter Hannah Emmeline Pell was born in Canada in 1852. The record of Hannah's baptism in 1859 at St. James Church Stanbridge East, Missiquoi Quebec, says she is the daughter of John Pell and Sarah Ann Ross.
I have found Sarah Ann Ross, who sometime after 1852 married Charles L. Brown. They moved their family to Southwest Michigan in the 1860s, based on the fact that into 1860s, there are records of their children being baptized in the church listed above. I'm told Hannah's baptism would not list John Pell as her father if he and Sarah were unmarried, but I have found no marriage, no divorce record, and no death record for John Pell in Canada, and no record of Sarah being known as Sarah Pell. All other records I have found for Hannah list her maiden name as Brown, so I'm not even sure if she knew that Brown was not her biological father. I have been trying to solve this mystery for years and it remains a brick wall. Any help would be hugely appreciated. I believe Sarah Ann Ross is of Dunham, Quebec. Father Henry Hart Ross, mother Charlotte Sawyer. The Ross family appears in the 1850s census in Dunham. There is also a Pell family listed in the area, but none are named John and first name aside, none seem to quite fit. NOTE: If this is a clue, throughout Hannah's life she said she was part Indian, and even brought artifacts with her from Canada as a child. I am now wondering if John Pell was possibly adopted by the Pells, or if John Pell was First Nations', but that was his "English name." I'm grasping at all straws at this point, so even a clue would be so helpful. Thank you.
