Edward Stephens/Catherine Burdett

Just a little more information on Edward Stephens and Catherine Burdett. Edward has been very difficult to track down because of the common name. He was born in Wales around 1800 and married at Campbellfield Vic. on 22.10.1838. He died at Nhill on 7.3.1889 aged 89 (ref. 4013) I have his death certificate and on it his parents are listed as unknown. Hence the brick wall. Previous contributors have listed their children but they've missed 2. They had an illegitimate child born at sea on 9.8.1838. Posssibly on the ship 'Endora' but I can't confirm this. His name was George and he died on the 23.5.1917 and is buried at Stawell. The other son was James born about 1853. I have not been able to find a record of his birth, but he died at Stawell on 1.5.1929 and is buried there. I am his great grandson

Edward seemed a very popular name. He had a son Edward who was once the oldest man in Victoria and died at 100 years of age. He also had a son Edward who died at Nhill in 1893. More Edwards appeared after this which makes tracing the family history a nightmare.

There is some oral history in the family that the original Edward was a member of John Pascoe Fawkners party at the founding of Melbourne in 1835. But this can't be right simply because he had a son born at sea on 9.8.1838 on the voyage out and he married on the 22.10.1838 so they arrived between those dates but I haven't been able to find out when. Not to say of course that he didn't know Fawkner after arrival,
Catherine (also known as Caroline) was born in London about 1813. She died at Stawell on 3.7.1883 and is buried there.

I would love to hear from any other descendants. Russell Stephens
