Unexpected Treasures

Journal by Jeanne M.

You never know where you might find an ancestor.I have found many distant cousins while searching the internet but never dreamed of finding a clue while reading a magazine titled THE WEST that was going to the trash when I decided to read an article in it about BELLE STARR queen of the bandits. To my surprise there was an article in there about DR. j. H. PICKERING with a photo of him,his wife and children. Since my grandmother was a PICKERING I decided to save that magazine and now I have another route to research since it gave personal data on him as well as the story of how he watched the siege at INGALLS, OKLAHOMA in 1893 when marshals and gunmen fought to the death. He recorded all he saw in a journal that now rests with the OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The internet has opened many avenues to researchers but what a surprise to find one in a magazine dated 1972 that I happened on by chance....

Just want to add the final chapter to this little story. This week while searching family trees on Rootsweb for Pickering ancestors from 1700's I noticed a Jacob Hiram Pickering but no indication he was a doctor. I decided to concentrate on searching his background and found he was a fourth cousin three times removed. I was able to trace his wife and their children also which really made my day after spending two years looking for any information on Dr. J. H. Pickering and finding a short bio on his life. None of my many queries looking for info on him were answered but Perserverance paid offf for me.

I had a private message from Capt. JWP and sent him a reply but received no answer, I do hope he will email me again as I am interested in any additional data he has on the family of Dr. Pickering
