My Great Great Great Grandfather was Robert Hawkes who brought his family to Adelaide in the mid 1830s. He was the secretary (2IC) to the Surveyor General of Adelaide. Robert had been educated at Eaton and had studied Botany at Oxford University. No less importance was his wife Sarah Hawkes (nee Fisher) who's family had been in the Tyneside area since the early 1500s. The first Fisher arrived there as a minister at a Tyneside church where his name is on a notice board as the first minister.
The family had sailed back to Newcastle-upon-Tyne later in the 1830s where Robert had set up a mahogany importing business in Pilgrim Street in Newcastle. The building is no longer there but there are many historical buildings in the street that have similar Georgian character.
According to the 1842 census Robert and his son John Henry Mason (my great great grandfather) were at the place of business on that day. Sarah had the rest of the family with her in a fabulous three storey terrace house by the seaside at Tynemouth a wonderful historic town. The site of the first Viking landing. (I have a photograph of the group of houses). They returned to Adelaide during 1848 and Robert became a Land Agency in the brand new city of Adelaide. The house that Robert built is still in King William Street. It was for sale in 1973 and we had a look through it then. My father thought about buying it but in the end didn't think it was a good idea to return his family to Adelaide when his grandfather James Simons Hawkes had worked so hard to move his family to Sydney where he was a very successful civil engineer.

Mason, Robert Joseph, Elizabeth Ann, Jonathan, and Charles Flaxman.
John Henry Mason Hawkes-[2] was born about 1829 in ENG, died on 14 Oct 1858 in Glen Osmond SA
AUS, about age 29, and was buried in SA AUS.

son of Mr Robert Hawkes, Kensington Street Adelaide, aged 31 years.
