Morgenthal emigrants from Germany
The first person with surname Morgenthal emigrated from Reichensachsen (Hessen region of the then Prussia) to Cape of Good Hope, now Cape Town, South Africa. He accomplished this by enrolling as a soldier in the Dutch VOC. He was allocated to the East Indiaman "Luymuiden" and left Texel on 5 May 1762; arriving in the Cape on 17 September 1762.
Johan Casper Morgenthal (whose surname was changed by the Dutch scribes to Morgendaal) married Petronella Essler (originally from Eisenach, and from this union the family originated.
Two other Morgenthal youngsters left Reichensachsen for employment in the VOC in Amsterdam. However, one died at sea and the other one was taken off his ship by the English authorities in Portsmouth where his ship the "Teilingen" called en route, because the English considered him to be illegally on a Dutch ship (by all accounts he was pressed into service in the Royal Navy).
