McVicar James of Scotland

James McVicar was born c1830 supposedly in Inverness Scotland but there is no birth record neither does he appear on the 1841/1851 census. He arrived in New Zealand about 1854, appears to have had a sea connection (fishing perhaps)as he gave his occupation as boatman/mariner before becoming captain of a coastal cutter. Sadly he drowned in 1872 and his death record gives no information. He married in 1867 Mary Ann Fitzpatrick nee Finnie with the name McVicar but used the alias James Stanley, a surname used by the family and following generations.
As Mary Ann Finnie had children during her marriage to Bernard Fitzpatrick the question arose, where they Fitzpatricks or McVicars. DNA results show only Scottish connections so we feel confident our line is McVicar.
We have been unable to get any leads on Mary Ann Finnie's first husband Benrard Fitzpatrick who came to NZ with the 58th Regiment, his army records only show birth place Larah Cavan Ireland and what happened to him after Mary Ann left him.

Finnie of Scotland

John Finnie is beieved to have been born 1809 Tongland Kirkcudbright.
He spent most of his adult life in the Army, married Jessie Birch and they had 4 children, Mary Ann, Jane, Jessie, & Edward Birch. John came to N.Z with the Fencibles 1849. Within a short time John left his family and where he went or died is not known, neither is it known what happened to his wife Jessie Birch who had a colourful record on the Police Files. Nothing has been found on Jessie Birch's early life but it is believed she may have been born in Ireland.
