Working now on family european roots. My original Paternal american ancestor was born in "Polen" in 1820 and was an officer in the King's German Legion in the Crimean War. He married a girl living at the Sandgate workhouse near the Shorncliffe base in Kent. Her name was Mary Whitehead. She was born in 1837. They married at Cheriton parish and came to the US around 1857. Wladyslaw Manduka is listed as a member of the 93rd NY infantry, the 17th NY volunteer infantry, and the 25th NY cavalry in the Civil War. Some of his life is published in the British historical book, "The Coast of Conflict" by Michael George. The book includes some of my historical research on mercenary forces and light cavalry in the Crimea. I am the descendant of Wladyslaw's son Arthur, of Philadelphia, PA.

I am searching for other Manduka's especially in Germany, Poland,France, or Italy. Name variations are Manduca and Manduke. Wladyslaw Manduka is buried at the Loudon Park National Military Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland. I recently ordered a new gravestone for him from the Veteran's Administration. I was unable to convince the Army to list the "2nd British Foreign Cavalry, Crimea" on his stone!
