My name is Mary STILWELL and I am researching my Husbands connection to the GUESS/GUEST/GIST family,especially the link between George "Sequoyah" GUESS,legendary Cherokee Scholar.

My Husbands Paternal Grandmother was Cora Guess BOOKOUT STILWELL. She was a Twin to her sister Nora, both born 26 Apr 1911 in Johnson, Washington, Arkansas.

Her Parents were William Charles BOOKOUT and Feriba Jane GUESS and
she had 8 siblings: Nora(t),Pearl,Mozelle,Lucille,Burl,Willie,Hubert and Helen. All were raised in the NW Arkansas area.

Cora married Edward Ellis STILLWELL in Washington Co. Arkansas.
They had 8 children: Homer,Lillian,Margaret,Lucille,Frances,Billy, Johnny,and Robert.

Parents of Feriba Jane GUESS were, Lee GUESS(GUEST) and Carline(CAROLINE)ARTHUR GUESS. I have tracked them to the 1910,1920 US Federal Census for Prairie, Washington County, AR. It shows Lee GUESS B:1857--Arkansas. Carline GUESS is shown on the 1920 as B:1864---Indiana but in the 1910 her DOB is 1869--Tennessee.

There is a story from Cora GUESS BOOKOUT STILLWELL, that her mother gave her maiden name to Cora in order to keep the GUESS name active because of the historical connection to their Cherokee Indian Ancestry.
