About 1712 there was recorded in the Salem County, "Record of Cattle Marks", the following: "John Mayow his cattle and swines mark with a halffe penny on ye upper be of ye wrigh earre and a halffe penny on upperside of ye left eare".

In 1715, he was enrolled as John Mahue, a "foot shoulger in Captain John Loyde's command in Pilesgrove Prescent in ye countie of Salem in ye province of Jarsie".

On September 18, 1716 John Mahu witnessed the will of Ebenezer Allen. Interestingly, on December 26, 1716, John Mahu signed the statement of witnesses by mark! Forgot how to write??

?Conventional Wisdom? says that John was a grandson of Governor Thomas Mayhew pf Martha?s Vinyard. Who came down from Massachusetts to the back woods of Salem County, New Jersey ( a little junket or several hundred miles) and married Joan Standford
However with all the genealogical work done on the good governor no one has yet come up with an identifier other than ?A grandson of Governor Thomas Mayhew?

Maybe it?s a lack of romance in my soul but I don?t think so.

Especially since the YDNA of a descendent of Governor Thomas and two descendents of John Mayhew of New Jersey does not even come close to matching

AND even more especially since in 1685 Philip Mayow and Helen his wife, John Mayow, Elizabeth Mayow and Martha Mayow arrived in Philadelphia on the ship ?Bristol Merchant? as indentured servants to the family of Major Jaspar Farmar. It just seems to me that it would be a lot more logical for John Mayow to work out the terms of his indenture, row across the Delaware River, walk a couple of miles in Salem County, there to meet and marry the lovely Joan Standford (Hey, we had to get our good looks from someone). Thus founding that merrie band of miscreants and ne?er-do-wells so well known in song and story at the Mayhew Family of Sout? Joisey!
