Journal by Viles9942

Researching the Viles name ,and have en-counted some unusual spelling and the exact location of origin .
This appears to be on the Continent Spain , France Polish , maybe even Italy.
Having located a town called 'Vellesse' pronounced Viles with emphases
on the 's' and other on the 'e'

Having read that people did take their surnames from the towns in which they lived .

Any interest in this would be welcome

John VILE was born in Curry Mallet, Taunton, Somerset in 1817
- his parents were Joseph VILE & Harriet TERRELL of South Petherton

- John married Ann FOSTER in 1844, when they were 27, in Somerset England
They had 5 children in England.
On Sunday, 30th November 1856 they all set sail from Liverpool on the ANN WILSON to emigrate to New Zealand. Sometime during the first 3 months of 1857 their baby Emma died during the voyage - she was about 2 years old or a little younger. The ANN WILSON arrived in Wellington on Monday, 30th March 1857 - a journey of 120 days, with a total of 250 passengers and crew

The Viles settled in the Wairarapa & Manawatu areas of New Zealand

- their first born son, Job Vile was the 1st Mayor of Pahiatua. He married Helen Bland RAYNER and they had 15 children

- their daughter Catherine Vile married Henry EAGLE and they had 11 children. She is buried in Carterton

Your Josiah Vile(s), being born in Somerset like the others and living in the Wairarapa was probably a relative of this family ..
