One of Canterbury's early settlers passed away in the person of Mr G. C. Waby, who died suddenly, at his residence, Epsom, Auckland, last Friday. The late Mr Waby was born in Bassingham, England, in 1834, and came to New Zealand in the Glenmark in January, 1865. He immediately took up land in the Southbridge district where he resided till about thirteen years ago, when he retired and lived in Merivale lane, Christ-church. Later on, for the sake of Mrs Waby's health, he removed to Auckland, where she predeceased him three years ago.
The late Mr Waby took an active part in public affairs. He was for some time a member of the Southbridge School Committee and for many years he was chairman of the Leeston Road Board. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a local preacher as long as his health permitted.
The late Mr Waby had a family of seven — two sons and five daughters.
Those surviving are Mr J. C. Waby of Riccarton, Mrs T. G. Brooke of Mt. Eden, Auckland, Mrs J. McLeod of Somerfield, Christchurch and Mrs A. Peak of Epsom, Auckland.
There are also thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren
