What happened to exile Thomas AUSTIN?

Question by mexican

Thomas Austin was born 4 April 1819, Great Billing, Northampton, England, to Harris Austin & Mary Pettit.

It appears that Thomas run foul of the law and was tried in 1844 and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, he was moved from Northampton gaol to Pentonville Prison on 2 Nov 1844.

On 22 June 1846 he was transported as an Exile on the vessel " Maitland" arr: at Port Melbourne on 10 Jan 1847...from there the trail goes cold!
I have not been able to trace his movements, so hoping someone may be able to help me. Thank You.

Thank you so much markav. I will look into these. Thomas was of the Presbyterian Religion. Do you think that gaol records would have what ship he arrived in?
Once again, many thanks.

Hi, I do have this information from court records (Northampton), but thank you all the same.

I will go to my local family history centre during the week to see if they have any of the Victorian Police Gazettes.
