When did Philippa Angwin and/or William Woolcock go to Australia from St. Agnes, Cornwall 1851-1857?

Question by figikk

A few years ago, I read a diary or journal entry about the Angwin family going to Australia. I now can't find it.

The Angwins were from St. Agnes Cornwall (as was William Woolcock) and they immigrated to Ballarat, Victoria between 1851 (1851 census) and William and Philippa's marriage in 1857.

Other Angwin family names are Richard, Rachel, mother and daughter, Elizabeth, Thomas and Mary. I think Elizabeth stayed on Cornwall and married Thomas Nankivell in 1852 and Rachel (Letcher) the mother appears back in Cornwall.

Can anyone connect me to the diary entry or anything else about this family?

I believe the Angwin's arrived from Cornwall in 1851 looking for gold. There are still decendants living in Kilmore and Daylesford (a town known as 'Jim Crow' before the gold rush).
Here, this obit explains a bit about the Cornish miners.
The Ballarat Courier, Monday 10 December 1917
(Victoria, Australia)

OBITUARY
The late John Anwin, who died on Saturday at his residence, 64 Victoria street, was a colonist for 63 years. He was a native of St. Just, Cornwall, and migrated with his mother to Australia in order to join his father, Mr Justice Angwin, who had landed three years previously. They came to Ballarat, where Mr Angwin, sen., was engaged in prospecting operations, in which he was very successful. He was then appointed manager of the Cornish Gold Mining Company at Daylesford, which position he held for nearly 20 years. The late Mr John Angwin worked with his father for many years, and finally came to Ballarat 26 years ago to take a position on the staff of the Last Chance mine. He married early in life, and brought up a family of nine children. He was an ex-president of the Daylesford Hospital, of which he was a member of committee for 21 years, and on leaving the town he was made a life governor of the institution. He was also an ex-councillor of Daylesford borough for about 15 years, and a member of the St. George’s Masonic Lodge, in which he passed through all offices. He was an ex-president of Ballarat Imperial Football Club, and always took a keen interest in the club.

Hi Janilye
Thank you for the newspaper link and doing some extra research for me. I wait with anticipation as it may give me some answers. William Woolcock is difficult to research as he has such a common name. Philippa Angwin is a little easier because her name is more unusual, but I cannot find a link with John Angwin. Her father's name was Richard. I have made an assumption that William is my gggrandfathers brother based on his daughters names- Lydia Henrietta and Mary Thurza - his sisters names (except for Henrietta).

The wife of this Richard below was Louisa
The Ballarat Courier,Thursday 10 January 1878
A railway employee named Richard Angwin died suddenly in the Hospital yesterday afternoon.
Deceased was jammed between the buffers of two
engines about a month ago on the turn-table at the Western station.
He was admitted to the Hospital, and in course of time discharged. A day or two ago, however, he was readmitted, suffering from an abscess, through the bursting of which he died, as above stated. Under ordinary circumstances an inquest would have been held, but Dr Holthouse's services as coroner having
been dispensed with, no enquiry took place, and
Dr Owen yeatetday gave a certificate of death
without performing a post-mortem examination.

I've decided that the ship's diary I have read but can no longer find belongs to Walter and Gertrude Lawry on Queen of the Mersey to Lyttleton in 1862. Their daughter Elizabeth married and stayed in Cornwall, as did Elizabeth Angwin.

My latest thought is that Philippa may be the sister of the Rev. Thomas Angwin, the first Methodist minister to Mudgee who died in 1867. His obituary states that he arrived in Australia about 1855 and was from Mithian in Cornwall.

Any thoughts?
