The one I have was born in 1840 and died in 1891. He married Elizabeth Maher 1835-1916 in Lancashire, Manchester.
On the 1851 Census where he appears with his mother Mary, nee Flynn age 57 and brothers Henry 15, John 13, and James 12. beside her's and Henry's name it says came to Manchester from Ireland. For John and James' it looks like they were both born in Lancashire, Manchester.
His Grandfather James 1773-1798 has a headstone on his grave at Ballymakellet, Louth, Ireland.

Dear janilye,
This is not my James. He and Elizabeth came from Kilkenny to England in 1860, married there in 1861 and emigrated to Melbourne Australia on the Great Tasmania with their son John who was born in Cheshire. He died soon after arrival in 1863 and one of the subsequent children was my grandfather John Joseph McDermott. They did live in North Melbourne. JJ married my grandmother Annie Schieblich in West Melbourne and they subsquently moved to Coburg.
