BATTLE at JUTLAND - MEN of the QUEEN MARY

Journal by ngairedith

This is a list of the crew from the battlecruiser HMS QUEEN MARY which was sunk on the 31st May 1916 during the BATTLE of JUTLAND.

The list of the crew is from the site BRITISH LOSSES AT JUTLAND - it has casualty lists for nearly all the Battleships, Destroyers and Cruisers searchable by ships name.
- Unless otherwise stated, all the men were from the UK -

* There were 5 canteen assistants on board who were civilians
* Arthur Brown
* H. Doughty
* Harry Edgar John Miller
* Frank William Roberts
* Edmund Walter Scammell

The Queen Mary blew up and sunk after a magazine explosion. she was the largest British warship sunk by German gunnery in WWI. She was called the most beautiful ship the Royal Navy possessed. This site lists info and photos of the ships that went down.
THE WRECKS of the BATTLE OF JUTLAND

An account of the loss by Navigation Officer of HMS NEW ZEALAND with photos DEVON HERITAGE ... "All seemed to be going well with us on New Zealand when suddenly I saw a salvo hit Queen Mary on her port side. A small cloud of what looked like coal-dust came out from where she was hit, but nothing more until several moments later, when a terrific yellow flame with a heavy and very dense mass of black smoke showed ahead, and the Queen Mary herself was no longer visible ...

NOTES
The casualties were 57 officers and 1,209 men killed; 2 officers and 5 men wounded. One officer and one man were subsequently rescued by German destroyers. Also 5 civilians. I have found survivor names varying from 5 survived, 9, 18 and even 20. Can you help?
