wilhelmina or thomas bryden?
letter from Paddy Neville (johnstone) 3/2007
Isabella Tait Johnstone (with an e) was born on 13.7.1836 and baptised 27.7.1836 - father Charles Johnstone of Knap, Longforgan, Perth. Charles was then a shepherd and I have a copy of the actual baptism, a copy of which I sent to Fraser. I expect you know that she died at 6 a.m. on 7th August 1872 on Muck of TB and Ebenezer Bradshaw Thorburn died 1875 at Oban also of TB.
I expect you have found your Isabella Tait Johnstone on the 1841 census at Kinnelhead Farm, Kirkpatrickjuxta, except that her mother, Wilhelmina, is listed as Bryden (her maiden name) but of course she was already married to Charles Johnstone by then. Wilhelmina's father is Thomas Bryden aged 70 a farmer, not born in the county on the 1841 census.
Thomas Bryden was born about 1766 and was buried at Watcarrick, some miles away, on 11.12.1844 and I found this when searching the area and looking at gravestones. His wife was Isabella Tait also buried 1827 Watcarrick, Eskdalemuir. I believe she was Isabella Tait born 27.6.1773 and baptised 4.7.1773 at Innerleithen, Peebles, but have not proved it yet.
By 1851 Charles Johnstone and Wilhelmina are at Mingary, Ardnamurchan. by 1861 Charles is a widower at Fanans Farm, Inishail Glenorchy. We found the grave of Wilhelmina at Kilchoan, not far from Mingary.
In 1865 Charles married my great grandmother Isabella Morrison and they are at Fanans in 1871. Charles died 1874 at Fanans and Isabella died 1882 in Edinburgh. All the children by his second wife Isabella were orphaned quite young. Their son John Morrison Johnstone (on the IGI as Monson Johnstone) is my grand father born Dec 1867.
