William Lutton & Mary Davidson of Newry, Ireland Part II - George & Flora
So onto my great-great grandfather George. George came to Australia aboard the Willam Sharples in 1842 with his two brothers John & Robert. John entered Australia as a married man with his wife Letitia Gilmore and daughter Hannah, and Robert & George entered Australia as single men.
There is little available information of what George did in Australia before he ended up in New Zealand. The only item I can find is an arrival record from San Francisco to Australia of a George Lutton on board the Ellen Simpson in July 1854. It would be logical to assume that like his brother Robert, he too went to California but then returned to Australia.
I can find no records of when George went to New Zealand but he was there at least from around 1871 to 1884 when he returned to Australia with his family.
In March 1872 George married Flora McLeod (1844-1923) at the private home of Rev IM McIntosh. George lists his age as 38!! and Flora as 28.
Flora came to New Zealand aboard the Bombay in August 1866 arriving in Canterbury. She was a single female and her occupation was listed as domestic servant. I have been unable to confirm who her parents are. Her marriage certificate does not list her parents names (not required in New Zealand prior to 1880) nor does her death certificate list her parents name other than unknown McLeod as her father. Her place of birth is listed as Inverness Scotland. There are various trees on Ancestry listing her parents names but all are different so I am loathe to assign parents names when I am unsure myself.
George & Flora had eight children between them. They were:
Christina 1867-1952 Born NZ, died NSW (Registered as McLeod, father Alexander "Finlayson")
Annie 1869-1962 Born ??, died NSW (unable to find birth registration)
William George 1871-1930 Born NZ, died NSW (registered as Alexander McLeod, father Alexander McKenzie. Birth cert shows name changed but only 'from' not 'to'
Flora 1873-1946 Born NZ, died NSW
Mary 1875-1954 Born NZ, died NSW
George Robert 1877-1950 Born NZ, died NSW
John 1878-1958 Born NZ, died NZ (surname transcribed as SUTTON in NZ BDM)
Thomas Norman 1882-1948 Born NZ, died NSW
All of George & Flora's children went on to marry except for Thomas. I have Thomas's death certificate that says he wasn't married but I have found a few NZ Electoral roll listings of a Thomas Norman Lutton residing in the Wairarapa, Wellington and Christchurch between 1905 and 1928. In Christchurch he was living with a Nellie Lutton and his occupation was listed as nurseryman. However I have been unable to find a marriage certificate to confirm and though his death certificate says he wasn't married the person who filled out the details was not a relative. It is not inconceivable that he lived in New Zealand for a while although I have not been able to determine to why. His death certificate lists his occupation as Station cook and I have found two crew lists between 1903 and 1907 both listing his correct age, where he was born and his occupation Pantryman. I have been able to determine that by 1932 he was back in NSW living with his sister Flora. Thomas died from pulmonary tuberculosis. There are no electoral roll entries for him after 1937 so I can only surmise he entered a sanatorium for the last years of his
Annie married Alexander Lutton (1865-1927) in 1888. Though there is no family link between them, Alexander's father John came to Australia from Newry on board the Champion in 1842 the same year as John, Robert & George. I did some research and the story of the Luttons on board the Champion is an interesting one but I'll save it for another post.
So the only brick wall in this line is who are Annie's parents? Is it Flora & Alexander Finlayson, Flora and Alexander McKenzie or George and unknown mother?
