James GAYNER and Elizabeth JONES married 11th February 1857 Bristol

Journal by mwg1

I?m looking for some help with a brick wall that I?m having trouble with. The known details I have at this stage are as follow;
James Gayner and Elizabeth Jones married 11th February 1857 in the Parish of St James in the County/City of Bristol. Both are stated to be unmarried. James was 23 years old, a Labourer and his father, James a glasscutter. Elizabeth was 20 years old, a servant and her father, William, a butcher.
They travelled to Australia aboard the ?Alfred?, arriving 23rd July 1857.
James died 18th July 1920 aged 85 in Hamilton, NSW. His death certificate states that he was married at age 23 to Elizabeth Jones, he was born in Nailsea, England, his parents are James Gayner, glasscutter, and Eliza Parker, and that he had been in the colony 63 years.
Children of the marriage were Female b 1858, Henry b 24/2/1859, Charles b 1862, William b 1864, Emily b 1867, James b 1868, George b 1871, Alice b 1873, Matthew b 1875, Alice b 1878, Agnes b 1880, Frank b 1883. I have some issues around the ?Alice?s? dates.
I?ve been looking in the 1841 & 1851 censuses for a James of about the right age with a father James and mother Eliza without success. The closest I have so far is a family in Nailsea with a James of the right age with a father Edward and mother Eliza. The family name is spelt ?Gainer? in the 1851 census.

From information extracted from "Biographical, Genealogical and Descriptive History of the First Congressional District of New Jersey" Volume 1, The Lewis Publishing Company 1900, pp 176 - 182.

This section of the book talks about the GAYNER family in detail, especially John Gayner, the founder of the Gayner Glass Company and his siblings who are located in the USA, England, and Australia.

A summary of some of the details below;

Edward Gayner Married Elizabeth Parker 7th June, 1829
John Snr died aged 68, Elizabeth died aged 74
13 Children
Eliza b. 5th July, 1830, d. 9th September, 1831
John b. 5th December, 1831, married (1) Frances Atkin (6 children), married (2) Elizabeth Wilkins 1st October, 1861 (several children, all but 2 died in infancy)
Edward b. 23rd January, 1833, moved to Norristown, Pennsylvania
James b. 3rd October, 1834, moved to Australia
Eliza b. 15th February, 1836, d. about 1851
Robert b. 4th September, 1837, residing in Bristol
Richard b. 14th February, 1839, residing in Bristol
Frank b. 2nd November, 1840, residing in San Francisco, California
Mary b. 17th April, 1843, living in England
Mathew b. January, 1845, came to America with John but soon returned to England, place unknown.
Ann b. 23rd December, 1847, residing in England
George, a shoemaker living in England
Hannah b. 23rd July, 18??, married and living in England

I believe this all links together fairly well, but, I still have an issue with the father's name on the marriage and death certificates not lining up with the details in the census and the book.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Mark

John Gayner, founder of Gayner Glass, was my 3rd great grandfather. The Thornbury Quaker records have been very helpful piecing together information about the Gayner family in England.

Edward Gayner (1806-1876) married Elizabeth Parker (1807-1878) and had 13 children.

John Gayner V (1780-1863) married Hester Newby (1780-1868) and had Edward Gayner.

John Gayner IV (1754-1823) married Celia Olliffe (1753-?) and had Mary (1776) and John (1780).

John Gayner III (1683-1719) first married Ann Levett (?-1750), and had 5 children, none of whom lived more than 6 years before Ann passed away. He second married Hannah Bishop (1720-1770) and had John (1754), Robert (died in infancy), William (1756-1830), Robert (died in infancy), and Hannah (1760-1788.

John Gayner Jr. (1683-1719) married Hannah Boye (1690-1738) and had John (1710), Elizabeth (1712-1736), Margery (1714), William (1714-1798), and Francis (1717-1729).

John Gainer Sr.(1655-1728) first married Alice Williams (1645-1698) and had John (1683). He second married Elizabeth Fowler.

John Gainer's parents may be William Gayner (1615-1681) and Ann Stone Jones (1620-1684).
