Descendent of Te Rangiata

Journal by Baggott

I am a descendent of Astley Laurie and Te Rangiata who died while giving birth to Annie Laurie in Kawhia. Annie went on the marry William Edwards and then in the next generation, Mary Jane Edwards to Archibald Baggott. They lived in Otago. Archibald's family came from Southland Invercargill.
Astley Laurie was the son of John Laurie who was a convict from UK arriving in Sydney in early 1800's. Astley ran foul of the law in Sydney and absconded to Kawhia. John Laurie married Sarah Bockerah who was born in Sydney in 1792. Sarah's father Solomon Bockerah was a convict arriving on the Second Fleet in 1789. His wife (in UK) Anne was a free woman who also came from London on the Second Fleet following Solomon over. Anne died early in Sydney and Sarah was "adopted" by some friendly people until she married John Laurie. John Laurie died in Karaka south of Auckland.
My lack of understanding revolves around how Annie Laurie and William Edwards, from the North Is, came to give birth to a daughter Mary Jane who ended up in the South Is? Does anybody have anything to add to this story please?
I also have little information as to the background of Te Rangiata who was living in Kawhia?

Hello Baggott, Mary Jane Edwards (1864-1955) did not actually 'end up' in the South Island, she was born there, at Tokomairiro
* We can follow them like this ..
William 'Bill' Edwards (1823-1912) was born in Cornwall, England. He arrived into Auckland 31 March 1843, on the Westminster
Annie Laurie (1840-1918) was born in Kawhia, Waikato (as you have above).
. they married on 25 July 1859, possibly Kawhia
known children of William & Annie
. . only the 1st child was born in the North Island
* 1861 - 1902 William Astley Edwards (+Cogger)
. born Kawhia, died Southland
* 1863 - 1952 Elizabeth Anne Edwards (+Gibbs +Roberts)
. born Awaroa, Tasman?, died Invercargill
* IF Elizabeth was born in Awaroa, then William & Annie were now heading south to get to the Otago goldfields.
* 1864 - 1955 Mary Jane Edwards (+Baggott)
. born Tokomairiro River, Otago, died Mount Gambier
. . Tokomairiro, Tuapeka & Milton, were all in the centre of the 1st major Otago Gold Rush of the 1860s
* 1867 - 1962 Frederick Edwards (+Garden +other partners)
. born Milton, died Oamaru
* 1869 - 1876 John Edwards
. born in Tokomairiro, died there 3 July 1876 aged 7
* 1871 - 1957 Louisa Edwards (+Perry)
. born Tokomairiro, died Auckland
* 1873 - 1933 Annie Laurie Edwards (+Petersen +Richardson)
. born Tokomairiro, died Bluff
* 1874 - 1964 George Robert Edwards (+McKenzie)
. born Kaiapoi, died Auckland
* 1877 - 1933 Herbert Henry Edwards (+Bowers)
. born & died Balclutha
* 1879 - 1918 Archibald Edwards
. born Southland, died Timaru 8 days before his mother
* 1885 - 1959 Maggie Edwards (+Parker)
. born Southland, died Timaru

William Edwards died 8 Dec 1912 in Gore
. A gore telegram states that there passed away on Sunday, Mr William Edwards, a resident of Croydon Bush for the last 31 years and a colonist of 69 years standing. He was 89 years old and arrived in Auckland in 1843. In the early sixties he took part in the Otago goldfields rush and subsequently came to the Gore district in 1871. He leaves a widow, four sons and four daughters.
. in my reckoning there were four sons & five daughters, although Mary Jane moved to South Australia between 1895-1898 - was she not counted?

Annie Edwards died 27 Nov 1918 in Timaru, 8 days after their son Archibald.
. EDWARDS - At Timaru Hospital, on November 20, 1918, Archibald, youngest son of the late William and Annie Edward,. Croydon Bush; aged 39 years.
. EDWARDS - At 32 Avenue Road, Timaru, on November 28, 1918, Annie, relict of the late William Edwards, Croydon Bush; aged 78 years.

Fab info. It relects what I have. I am Louisa Edwards (+Perry) Great Grandson. Has anyone reasearched the deaths of both Annie Edwards and her son Archibald?
With 8 days apart was this a disease or an accident?
